dare to fail gloriously

Got a few questions I would appreciate help with.

1) Where should I be looking for new-ish lo-fi music, stuff like harlem?

2) What are good albums to start with for Mercury Rev and The Dismemberment Plan?

3) If I like "Palaces of Montezuma," will I other stuff by Grinderman? I've never listed to any Nick Cave.

I actually think that Harlem's album is recorded pretty well, and wouldn't really file it under Lo-Fi. For some Nuggets-y, mid-fi Garage Rock similar to Harlem, try Thee Oh Sees, Smith Westerns, The Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall, Happy Birthday, Black Lips, The Strange Boys, and Wounded Lion.

For The Dismemberment Plan, start with Emergency & I then get Change and ...Is Terrified.

more oldstyle. you're looing at a pretty limited group of dudes. basically every loving thing on Unruly Records, a good chunk of the stuff on Milkcrate records, and for some reason DJ Funkstar from Amsterdam who has pretty much nailed the old style sound. Also keep an eye on the Crossfaded Bacon blog as well as the hollerboard (if you dont have an account get one. best resource for anyone looking for "dj friendly" music. It's all legal too btw.)

What, no love for !? It may be more raw than the rest of their albums but it's still awesome.

But yeah you should start with Emergency & I and/or Change, then get the rest if(when) you dig it.

Whoa, great timing.

I am utterly infatuated with The Gaslight Anthem - specifically the entire '59 sound album. What else should I listen to?

Hello goons - I've been listening to a bit of Stars lately, for which I have lurking in this thread to thank. I've gone through some of the sites recommended, which has yielded some fruit, but I feel I'm looking for things more similar to specific songs, so I thought I'd ask in here.

I'd like some help finding 90's acid house tracks that sound similar to this one:

Sandals - Feet (Night Slam VI). Acid appegios start at 3:30 or so and build from there. That's the part I'm most hoping to find in new tracks.
or
Orbital - Impact USA (The Earth is Burning). Tweaky acid stuff at 4:55 and is the big draw of the track for me.

I own both of these tracks and really want more in the same vein. I never had the good fortune to bump into any mixtapes or track names that are similar to this stuff at the time when it was big and well, I'm hoping you goons can help me find a few more tedious bleep bloop tracks as much like the Sandals one as possible.

Characteristics - slow builds with lots of squelchy 303 sounds and thumping 4/4 beats for all us club-loving dunderheads. I've got very early acid house from the late 80's and that's too slow for what I'm after. I think this is all clocking in at 130+ BPM.

I do have Fatboy Slim - Everyone Loves a 303 already, that is more on the breakbeat side which is further from the house sound I'm hoping you can help me dig up.

Thank you for any help you can give.

This isn't a recommendation request for a band, but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations/good experiences with subscription-based music services such as the Zune Pass, Rhapsody, etc. I didn't see a thread for this type of service, nor did I feel it entirely appropriate to start a new one.

There are a lot of different services available with different features, but I'm mostly interested in a large electronic-genre selection and the ability to play some music offline on a device like a phone or something.

Anyone have any personal experience with these types of services?

I'm looking to expand on my collection here. Specifically I've been listening to a lot of Morphine, Soul Coughing, White Stripes, and Squirrel Nut Zippers. I don't have an exact match for the bands you mentioned but I here are some other groups I started listening to around the same time I was listening to Soul Coughing and Squirrel Nut Zippers. Hopefully these will strike a chord with you as well.

There are lush basslines and crazy cinematic energy in these two tracks. Great horn sections on both.
Jimmy Smith - Theme from Joy House
United Future Organization - The Planet Plan

Slowed down sexy grooves with saucy lyrics. The use of beat up vinyl samples reminds me most of Soul Coughing:

Lovage - Strangers on a Train

So, I'm trying to get more music that I really like, and I'm going in two completely different directions, and I would like some recommendations on both ends.

1). Really banging, driving rock/pop music. I don't quite know how to describe it, but something that is all climax, so to speak. I just got Pop Levi's first album, and stuff I'd put in a similar set is The Hives and Asteroids Galaxy Tour (I know those don't sound too much alike, but I hope somebody gets what I'm talking about).

2). Some really sparse music, like the beginning of LCD Soundsystem's new album, or something that sounds lo-fi, like Ariel Pink, but it's not super degraded-sounding, like some of his earlier stuff.

These are really loose, and I'll listen to just about anything, but for some reason, I keep getting grabbed by these sounds. I dunno quite how to describe them.

I'm in the mood to listen to some dark gothy music like I used to when I was full of callow youth and had more than a few poor life decisions in front of me. I've looked around a bit. However, most of what I've found isn't very good or if technically good, tends to sound like the last wizened gasp of nu metal.

For reference I'd like something in the veins of My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, The Faint's Dance Macabre, Adam Freeland's "We Want Your Soul," Icon of Coil, Wumpscutt's "Wreath of Barbs," or CombiChrist; in hindsight most of that could probably fit in some sub-genre of Electro or Darkwave or whatever the gently caress people used to call it.

Appreciate any help or direction you can provide.

If you like Morphine, you should look into "Treat Her Right" Mark Sandman's first band. I'd caution you though, that while the first album is good the two subsequent albums are not as great due to label pressure.

Here's a taste, with some sinuous faceless dancing: http://video.yahoo.com/watch/2025260/v2148404

Can anyone recommend something along the lines of trip hop meets dubstep? I'm looking for stuff with subtle grooves, melodic and harmonic lines, and a slight drum and bass influence. Bonus points for flangers.

I just heard some James Blake and really dug it.

I remember there being this tune that Goapele sang on that had a very downtempo drum n bass groove that I loved, but I have since been unable to find it anywhere.

I also like stuff by Cut Copy and Bassnectar, though the latter is a little too nuts for what I'm looking for at the moment.
