The part # for the spring bolts are 44059AA010 for anyone playing at home. I read on a few places that it's better to just get a proper fitting non-spring bolt as the spring ones happen to break/get lost easily. Any thoughts? JayKay fucked around with this message at 03:17 on Dec 27, 2010 |

The springs are there to help absorb the vibration of the exhaust. Just get new ones and put some loctite on them if you're worried about the nut backing off later.

How many people here have done open source flashing? I am thinking about doing it with my '08 WRX and it seems like the cheapest option, kind of like cheating the system to get a couple of extra HP's.. I mean, $50 for a generic map, $40 for the required air filter (in one example) and a borrowed cable seems mighty nice compared to having someone tune a stock WRX!

If you just want a tune on your stock WRX and an Intake/air filter you should be able to go to your local shop, throw down ~75-120 bucks depending on their area, they'll take a base tune and tweak it specifically to your car. You'll get potentially better mileage and performance. Off the shelf maps just aren't going to get the most bang for your buck.

I decided it would be a good idea to scrape my 2004 Forester XT against a concrete pillar in my garage. The damage is mostly contained on one door but does creep a bit onto that back quarterpanel right at the seam. Any ideas on cost to get this fixed? Sorry for bad pics, the door is dented in more person than it appears in pics.

I did an OTS tune and it was free (borrowed the cable, downloaded the software). Excellent for both Stage 1 and 2.

(crossposted, sorry) WOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO Finally got a real test for the WRX last night. Unfortunately the heavy stuff went to jersey, but Philadelphia got a little snow too (~1 foot). Tires: 205/55/16 Blizzak WS70 Impressions: 1) You need to disable the ABS. The ABS system for whatever reason KILLS the braking force. You can brake very hard right up until you trigger it... then you got nothing unles you back off of it for a second and reapply. Annoying. Other than that, AWESOME. 2) Unless you drive in snow that's significantly deeper than your ground clearance, you are NOT getting stuck. Unfortunately, when I spotted the deepest unplowed hill this morning, at the bottom of it there was a guy who was digging through the snowbank with his wife sitting in their Accord, trying to get to work. I figured it'd be pretty dick to go driving up and down the road as he's obviously stuck, so instead I offered to help. : You got another shovel? I'll help ya out! : No, but thanks. : You sure? I'm just trying to help. : I have another one, but it's at home. : Okay let's use that then : (pointing uphill) I can't make it back. : Hop in! Drove up the hill, plowing the whole way with the bumper but still managed 10-15mph. I enjoyed it as much as the Accord owner Got him dug out and pushed him back onto the road. Karma points 3) I REALLY wish I had heated mirrors. Ugh. (Edit: You can apparently add heating elements to your WRX easily) Blaise fucked around with this message at 04:48 on Dec 28, 2010 |

I had mine done at the dealership after I read about it. I was having ABS issues where it would go insane when braking over small patches of sand outside my apartment complete, or anything gritty like lots of stones or rocks. It seemed to almost eliminate the problem altogether, but I didn't really get a long time to get a feel for it, I sold my '02 PSM wagon 2 weeks later.

I had no idea there was ever a fix for that, it was common to just pull the ABS fuse back when I had an '02.

The ABS reflash makes a HUGE difference on the '02. My dealership did mine when I was in for something else. I didn't even have to tell them about it.

Hey guys, I'm considering a 2006 Legacy 2.5GT limited. It's got 92,000 miles as of right now, appears to be loaded out. It's also got a 5 speed - is this the weak gearbox I always hear about on the WRX? Basically, is there anything in particular I should look for/be worried about? I'm also wondering about the timing belt interval and turbo lifespan. From a little googling I've seen 105k for the belt and 60k for the turbo, does that sound right?

That said it's widely accepted that the legacy transmission is "stronger" than the wrx's.

Where the hell did you hear 60k lifespan for the turbo? The turbo should last just as well as the rest of the engine provided that proper maintenance has been done to the car.

I actually saw the 60k turbo lifespan mentioned over on the legacygt.com forums. Thanks for clearing it up. I also wasn't too sure on the gearbox thing, plus I wouldn't really plan on doing a bunch of 3k clutchdumps so I'm guessing it won't be an issue. Anything else important to look for on these cars around 90k? Still waiting on pictures and any maintenance history they might have.

Change the oil and major fluids (trans oil, rear diff oil, coolant, etc). That's all you need to do really.

Also, get a leak down, check for wheel bearing issues, and CV-boot problems.

My local dealership fixed my LGT. Turns out it was the Napa oil filter causing my oil dummy light issues. They put on an OEM Subaru one. They went over the car with a fine tooth comb and gave it a clean bill of health. Oil pressure test results were dead nuts on. Drove the car around town plenty tonight and the thing feels great.

Has anyone heard of retrofitting headlight washers? From my understanding they're standard equipment on the HID Subarus sold in Europe (and Australia), but not here. I found this parts listing for the STI - it looks (from the diagram) like it should all fit under the bumper cover with some cutting and trim pieces for the nozzles. Probably not too hard to wire up the switch either. I checked nasioc and iwsti but it's just people who have them as OEM complaining about them being broken for whatever reason.

Well I needed a car, and ever since a ride in a friend's (ex casual rally driver) v6 STi I've been hooked. I've had an Impreza RX which was nice, but had to sell it anyway. I also had my uncle's 2006 modified STi as a loan for a couple of months and that was interesting O_o So a few weeks ago I was driving along and saw the attached item for sale. Absolute mint condition, no mods except for suspension, not a paint chip or ding on the whole thing. Took it for a hard drive, drove very well, so I bought it. Probably should have done more checks, but eh Anyway, it's huge fun to drive. The suspension mods make it corner seriously flat, boost comes on just over 2200rpm and from there I can hardly grab gears quick enough. It snapped the accessory belt yesterday after a rather hard drive, but for the first time in my life I fixed it myself. Navigated the parts cretins at the local bling merchants, watched a youtube instructional and got it on, although I need a new socket set now. I'm also not convinced it revs free enough, so I'll send it in to a Subaru specialist for a full workover, but so far so good. Anyway, I'm happy

Has anyone from canada bought a 2011 WRX, and have you gotten any sort of deal on pricing? My 328 is not as well-behaved as I like in the winter, and I don't really feel like dumping more money into my non-running 325iX. I really miss the AWD of my iX, but I want something with a little more power than my 328. I'll be looking at the base sedan and I don't really want any of the options - just the car, hopefully less than the sky-high MSRP of 32.5k.

I had to unscrew it a tad and let it run until oil came out of the filter, then tighten it up. Only happened once

Just got back from picking up my wagon from EQ Tuning. Had them do a conservative tune on it (7 of 10 on the aggressive scale). Made 274 awhp @ 6350 rpm, 310 aw ft-lbs @ 3500 rpm. And a nice smooth curve. Project Sleeper Wagon, complete.
