In my current office, out of 15 or so attorneys, I think one person has a military background (he was Navy officer, but not a JAG). In my last office with about 60 attorneys, I'd say 10 or so had a military background (maybe 5 or so were ex-JAG).

I assume you're lining out the IBR and whatnot right? You didn't take out private loans did you? Everyone should be sure to take advantage of what little "evil socialism!!11" we have in this country and get on the IBR teat before they yank the rug out from under us. And PLUS loans means you should never ever borrow a single dollar of private loans. EVER. I haven't read the OP in a couple years but that should be in there if it isn't.

TTT Online Dentistry School Welcome to Boalt aka Boalt Hall aka University of California, School of Law aka UC Berkeley Law School aka Berkeley Law. I have seen every name used on firm websites so no one knows what it is. The school is located on the UC Berkeley campus in the southeast corner right across the street from Memorial Stadium, the international students dorm (by far the hottest girls at Cal), and a bunch of frats and sororities, so location-wise the school is pretty awesome. Pros: You can take whatever you want in the undergrad school (caveat: introductory language classes don’t count for JD credit, although you can still take them just to take them and advance language classes DO count) and most classes offered at Haas, the B School. There are also little known formal arrangements with Stanford (take classes there if it’s not offered at Boalt) and Harvard (spend 3L year there, although transfers are foreclosed) if you need to massage your ego. A lot of young and fun faculty recently out of Yale and big fellowships. There’s a million secondary journals where you can walk in and say ‘Hey I want on” and bam, you’re on, no writing requirements or anything, so there’s that when you don’t make California Law Review. There’s also a lot of Panda classes (VIDEO GAME LAW~!) when you need a break and don’t give a gently caress about clerkships. OCIP numbers were up this year to working for over 50% of those who tried. I also do like that Boalt at least tries to be all things for all people – there’s a big IP and public interest focus here, but when it comes to BigLaw and Clerkships the administration has an all hands on deck approach since we’re paranoid about falling out of the top 10 (a big part of Berkeley’s academic identity is tied to it having more top 10 grad programs than any school). For the area, there is also some killer gourmet food spots in North Berkeley and San Fran is close enough to where you can escape when need be and enjoy the ballyhoo of that city (and also Marin County - think The OC only an even bigger attitude problem since it’s younger money and a lot more snooty education). Also there’s a lot of good weed floating around. Cons: This is not the charming kumbayee free love place where the streets are paved with handjobs and acid, as apparently it once was. The town is very much geared towards students for better or worse, and the hippies who did stick around are now just homeless beggars. Telegraph Ave has bad food. Socially, the law students are all really friendly (I’ve yet to meet one d-bag, definitely a change from my old school) but pretty anti-social – bar reviews are poo poo and poorly attended, and it’s not like Berkeley has good bars - there’s a couple dives and one cool on-campus bar called The Bear’s Lair, but it’s only cool on gamedays and for Beat the Clock where it gets dirt cheap. Grading is a mystery with the whole P/H/HH bullshit that I now officially dislike. Women here are whatever. And while Boalt does have street cred here in the Bay and throughout Cali, you still have to put up with people asking why you chose to go here over other schools (Stanford) but hey, you go to the world's premier public university (you pinko commie you). The Boalt building is also atrocious but there's a big renovation going on that might fix that; that renovation has been going on for three years so who knows if it'll be done by the time I graduate. Overall: I have some laughs, smoke some bud and I got a job for this summer, so I'm not hating law school or my decision to transfer right now. You can do a whole lot worse and if you want to stay in Cali and are a resident it's a relatively good deal. I pretty much lucked into getting in here after a miracle 1L so I really can't bitch. sigmachiev fucked around with this message at 00:11 on Dec 29, 2010 |

Final exams ended last week. I've been drunk ever since. I loving love law school. The material is so so interesting, and I really got off on studying like a maniac. It made me feel important. To potential law students: take this thread with a grain of salt. Law school is really a wonderful, incredible, amazing place. Your peers are really smart. The professors are brilliant. In short, going to law school is the best decision that I have ever made. I can't WAIT for the next semester to start.

I think that, if you are the type, law school can be a wonderful, incredible, enlightening experience. To answer your question, I am a 1L at Harvard Law in Cambridge. My job situation is pending, given the December 1 restriction and the general paucity of 1L firm jobs. I look forward to a nonpaying internship this summer in the field of my interest!

On the other hand, I know a lot of people who hate it and work like crazy (and generally have done mediocre to poor). tldr: It's a horrible idea for most people, a good idea for a significantly smaller number of people, even if you get into a T14.

Well, I really don't know if I could have been good at it because I hated it from the start and therefore never really tried that hard. But I always liked school and enjoyed law school classes, and had a lot of fun in law school without having to work that hard. However, that said, I wouldn't do it again because I just got lucky that it wasn't a big waste of time and money. It could have been a disaster once I knew I wanted nothing to do with practicing law. I wouldn't recommend it now given the scarcity of jobs. I graduated before it got bad, so that wasn't much of a factor when I started.

Is everyone saying they loved law school talking about the "academic" experience as opposed to the friends you made or the social aspect or whatever? If so, I don't get it. It wasn't challenging, thought-provoking, or engaging in any way to me. I'd spend the entire semester doodling in my notebook and then cram for three days and take a final or do research for a week and write a paper in a day. The material in nearly every class I took ranged from simply mind-numbingly dull (ERISA Litigation) to aggressively complex yet completely uninteresting (Immigration Law). And the 1L classes with their rote memorization of the same poo poo everyone in every law school across the country is learning? How was that in anyway "fun"? All law school was to me was a chore to get through so I could get a law degree and take the bar exam. I think it seemed that way to me because I didn't much get into the social aspect either, being an evening student with a full-time job and a family. I made maybe 3 or 4 friends in law school and hardly ever went to the social events. That's what leads me to believe that the people who are saying they enjoyed it are talking about the social aspect. It just baffles me that someone could enjoy the perfunctory academics of the whole thing. I made my earlier comment because it seemed to me that everyone I know who was able to get a big firm job (not many in the class of '09) seemed to be the type of person who really got a kick out of the bullshit structure of academics in law school and thrived on working really loving hard to push out that last .01 of GPA. In other words, the antithesis of me. vv I dunno, maybe I just hated it because it was an extra 4 hours a night every night of the week for three years. I have a great job now, and will be starting my dream job in July so it was worth I'll be damned if I ever say it was "fun". Defleshed fucked around with this message at 16:19 on Dec 29, 2010 |

While the social aspect of it is probably a big factor that made it fun for me, I enjoyed the academic experience as well. Don't get me wrong. I found some of it to be mindnumbingly dull as well. And I hated the stress of exams and worrying about class ranks and getting jobs. But I've always liked school, and if it were possible to be a professional student I would do that. I like classes and textbooks and the process of learning and all that, which is probably why I enjoy teaching so much because I get to be in that environment.
