What are the good EU comics? I have read enough EU novels as a kid to never really care to read them again but I'm more willing to waste some time reading a Star Wars comic book. Any recommendations? Or did I do a poor job of reading the thread?

I'm probably a horrible person for wanting it, but I'd like to see George Lucas go and completely remake Star Wars according to his original vision. I want to see just how bad it was. Better yet, make a wager with him. If the new films are liked by at least 50% of a group of unbiased, humorless film critics, he gets crowned God of filmmaking. If, however, he loses his wager, the film rights for all his movies go to a competent movie maker.

So, i found this years ago and thought it was pretty funny. A Maoist review of "Knights of the Old Republic"

http://web.archive.org/web/20071208164749/www.etext.org/Politics/MIM/bookstore/vgames/knightsoftheoldrep.html

quote:

Knights of the Old Republic ... or should we say Cossacks of the Old Republic?

Although many people have given this role playing game rave reviews in the united $tates for mostly technical reasons, even the rabid fans have admitted that it is easier to be evil in this game and that the Jedi Knights are too much more powerful than other characters. Apparently one way to "win" is to kill one's traveling friends.

The universe of Star Wars is not unlike our own. There are the common people, and there are the "great" people. Unlike in our own world, however, the "great" people in Star Wars have their own caste of warrior slaves with special powers who, under the guise of "maintaining stability" move against any insurrection and crush any move to advance the society.

In this game, the player takes a role of one such warrior that calls him/herself a Jedi KNIGHT. The manufacturer doesn't even try to hide the connection to the exploitative feudal system of the Middle Ages.

Throughout the game, choices have to be made, which affect the outcome of the game. Naturally, to a brainwashed child mind, the most exploitative options have been made the simplest, and quickest.

It is far easier to use your powers to steal, than to do charity. The game is far easier if you "go capitalistic," which clearly points to early indoctrination conspiracy by the fascists.

Throughout the game, the player is pitted in fights against common people, where s/he is shown that to resist the powerful means certain death. The deception is perfect, since the player is the power and this pries his/her mind open to indoctrination even more.

As is well known for the fascist bastards, they take enjoyment in killing others, and the game rewards the player for killing common people. In fact, it is not possible to progress in the game without killing commoners, and the manufacturer plainly tells the player: those who have the courage to kill, are strong. Those who don't are weak.

In one part of the game, the player fights for money--to the death. This serves well to illustrate the society, where money is everything and human life is worth nothing. The worth of a corpse is solely a function of its persynal properties, which have to be looted to advance in the game.

All in all, the Cossacks/Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most manipulative pieces of software ever devised. It leeches morality of young minds and prepares them to kill their peers to prevent a revolution. After all... the strong fascist knight shall always win.

As RagnarokAngel said, KOTOR is pretty well regarded. If you're into the more "old school" EU style than Tales of the Jedi, Dark Empire, and X-wing: Rogue Squadron are the staples. For the "modern" (ie, post-prequel) style of EU, it's KOTOR, Republic (especially the Quinlan Vos/Clone Wars arcs) and Legacy.

Unless you're referring to some other kind of monitors, directors aren't supposed to look at their actors directly, but instead they're supposed to see them how the camera sees them.

Well, a few years back, some blonde kid came through and massacred a whole village in the night, so the Tuskens have been sort of jumpy ever since.

I was just thinking today, the only good things to come out of Star Wars that come to mind were the original trilogy, the Thrawn books, the X-Wing novels, and a few games and action figures. :(

The EU is so full of contradictory, convoluted, and retarded poo poo I wish they would just do another reboot like they did in the early '90s and clear out everything but the movies. And maybe hire some writers who are actually talented. A man can dream... :sigh:

Eventually a franchise gets so big and bloated and full of crap, you have to put it down and start over. Worked wonders for Star Trek.

Again, it'll never happen, but I'd like to see some new fiction that throws away everything but the original movies and cherry picks a few good ideas from the EU (Thrawn), and actually feels like Star Wars. In other words, a good fun space opera. I don't really care for the idea of a geriatric Luke, Han and Leia fighting space bugs more dangerous than the Empire.

I think a big problem with a lot of the post-ROTJ stuff is there isn't really a planned story arc for the characters, and what character development you do get is stretched out over hundreds of books, and probably further than they should go. We don't see any LOTR sequels chronicling Frodo's adventures years after the trilogy, and I have to say, thank God. There isn't a conclusion. All good stories eventually end.

ROTJ isn't the logical end of the war and the Empire (unless you're an idiot (George Lucas)) but the majority of characters have reached their culmination. Luke matured into a man, became a Jedi and rejected evil, Han Solo realized he was a decent guy at heart, found his calling and Leia, Lando redeemed himself, Darth Vader had a change in heart and promptly died, etc. etc. It's also the turning point of the war, and because of this Episodes 7-9 probably wouldn't be as interesting because the Rebels are no longer the underdogs.

Yes 100% entirely spot on. There never needed to be any stupid stories about the three eyeballed son of the emperor trying to find a magic glove because the story reached it's ending in ROTJ. The characters have nothing left to learn or achieve because they already won, killed the bad guys, and went off to live happily ever after. The star wars universe doesn't need poo poo out super powered evil people every other week like it's an episode of dragon ball z. I mean the four armed clone son of Hitler didn't pop out of no where in may of 1945 just to fill the evil quota.

Star Wars and the Matrix have gotten to be so much like DBZ. The Star Wars Prequels really are the closest thing I have seen to a live action anime. (Course, not all anime sucks... just most. On a rare occasion you will find one that makes sense and has decent storytelling... sometimes.) Those fandoms seem to crossover a lot. These people are idiots.

Though I understand why people buy into the EU. I did it myself at one point before giving up on it. I'm a huge sucker from nostalgia and goofy cheesy stuff. I love comics, Transformers, Godzilla, stupid pulpy sci-fi stuff. And I am a huge sucker for nostalgia. Most of us love the original Star Wars, and it's almost natural for us to want to experience more of it! Sadly the prequels and EU don't capture that nostalgia and don't feel much like Star Wars. And the story was done, but they kept dragging it out of the grave and keeping it on life support as long as possible. And the most damning thing is, given that there are millions of comics and novels and games written by totally unrelated authors, there is no sense of direction and no coherent narrative.

Deep down inside, I'd really like to see more Star Wars adventures. We got them, and they were bad. Though in the hands of a few talented writers with a clear direction and a designated endpoint, I do believe you really could expand the Star Wars story. I'm going to contradict myself and say while ROTJ is a perfectly fine endpoint, it did leave some things unresolved, like how (or if!) the Rebels beat the Empire and if Luke restores the Jedi.

I'm not gonna lie, when I heard they were making another Clone Wars cartoon, I was disappointed. If it was any good, I would watch the poo poo out of a show that stars Luke and the gang and takes place during the OT. It's such a no brainer, it's shocking that they haven't done it. Does Lucas hate the original movies that much and like the Prequels so much more? I mean really, Mark Hamill was never as high profile as Harrison Ford, but he has a successful career as an cartoon voice actor. And Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Darth Vader and the like are cultural icons, and way more popular and beloved than anybody who appeared in the PT. Nobody gives a poo poo about the adventures of Anakin and Obi-Wan. But the return of the real Star Wars to the small screen? Especially with Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels reprising their roles? (Chances are they would.) That would be like printing money. Regardless of how good people say the Clone Wars is, I can't garner any interest in it because I can't stand the PT characters.

I really don't get the point of the Clone Wars series, regardless of the quality. It's the story of a farce proxy war fought by Palpatine against Sideous. We've seen the ending, and the entire era has been mined to death already. The whole thing just feels like a cynical cash grab when you consider the actual reasons for the Clone Wars.

One of the reasons that I try to have nothing to to with the Legacy-era is that I thought RotJ ended pretty drat well. Ok, so it isn't really the end of all the empire and the set up of a real republic again, but it was a neat little close point and it worked. And yeah, I didn't want to see the big five get changed. They were awesome at the end of Jedi, and that's how they should have been left.

Right, (semi not at all) serious thing:

I've been watching the Plinkett reviews and I've gotten to wondering how the prequels could have been written. Has anyone ever tried a fundamental re-writing? Not just making the lines or stage direction suck less, but completely changing the plot and basis of the characters?

I have a vague idea in my head.

Episode I - Starts with Obi-wan completing a mission with his non-Anakin padawan. Padawan gets knighted, Obi happy. Talks to Yoda (getting in the air of them being old friends/ former master-apprentice), Yoda suggests that Obi take an older Padawan who's master died - Skywalker. Two initially don't get along, Anakin doesn't agree with Obi's methods, Obi quelling headstrong Anakin. They deal with minor secessionist crisis together, grow closer, form friendship. Anakin's age: ~18 Obi's age: mid-40's

Episode II - More Master-Apprentice stuff, bigger secessionist stuff with the reveal of the separatist's clone army. Jedi reluctantly go to war, get asses handed to them across a variety of worlds, Republic begins to crumble, climax of film is formation of regular army of republic (formed from citizens of all species and planets) and a narrow victory to end in minor celebration, with the added hook of 'this isn't over'. Through film Obi and Anakin work with a hot-headed Correlian general and his more peaceful Aalderanian lieutenant Amidala (for want of a name). Two begin to respect each other, despite differing opinions on war, hints of romance by the end of the film. Anakin: mid-to-late 20's, Obi early 50's

Episode III - A few years later. War going well, but is costly. Galaxy visibly suffering. Palpetine is a pro-peace senator, with a finger in separatists (indications are he's a war profiteer rather than Sith at this stage). Amidala out of military looking after children by secret-hubby Anakin. Established that Anakin hasn't got home in over a year, hasn't seen child yet (doesn't know about twins). Palpetine leans on Anakin to end war quickly, encouraging vicious tatics from Anakin, draws some criticism, but he still acts as an admittedly pragmatic Jedi, so not much ire from council. OtherJedi follow his lead, start of mistrust of Jedi in Galactic populace. Anakin gets close to Palpetine. SHOCK HORROR! Amidala's home city/planet attacked! Amidala assumed dead! Anakin tries to deal with grief, covers reasonably well to Jedi. Tells all to Plapetine, who convinces him to take righteous revenge. He does, but becomes more dark in doing so, committing borderline war crimes for victory. Other Jedi still follow. Council become wary. Eventually Palpetine pushes Anakin into committing a true atrocity. Republic senate and galactic population blame Jedi as a whole and cast them out, blaming them (with Palpetine's help) for continuing war and suffering. Jedi ostracized and hunted down. Obi + Yoda try to help Amidala get away back to Anakin and into hiding. He mistakes it as an abduction and attacks (still doesn't see second child). Obi and Yoda leave him stranded and take children to hide with help of Amidala's Aalderanian friends. Few surviving Jedi track down Anakin and punish him as a Sith. Anakin kills them all, but is left mortally wounded. Palpetine comes along, reveals himself as sith and pulls Anakin properly over to the dark side. Anakin becomes Darth Vader after his nickname among separatist leaders. Palpetine also gets elected at head of Senate on Peace platform. End of film with Yoda on Dagoba, Leia on Aalderan, Luke and Obi on tatooine. Anakin: early 30's Obi: late 50's.

This leads into OT with Yoda actually having been Obi's master, Leia remembering her real mother and Obi actually being 'too old for this' at 70ish.

This is a very rough outline, and I get that some of it makes no sense, but the principle is (I think) sound. What if the prequels were completely different? Could they be made good?

Any thoughts?

I'm going to :goonsay: here and say it's probably for a tactical reason. If you can hide your numbers then you are using deception against whoever you're going to attack. If they think there's 2 they'll plan for 2. When you bring 10 they'll pretty much cry and pee.

If you never can tell how many there are, you'll never be able to accurately plan a fight against them.
