I feel like prices are inflated here in St. Louis too because of the lack of motorcycles(except harleys) and the fact that 10 inches of snow fell on us yesterday. How do we compare price wise to CA, lets say for giggles, in the Ninjettes? http://stlouis.craigslist.org/search/mca?query=ninja+250&srchType=A&minAsk=&maxAsk= I know they don't depreciate quickly but drat. I would love to get a supermoto as a first bike but they're all 3k+ which is pretty standard I think. I'm also keeping an eye out for drz enduro or s. I'll ask about the 16 inch tires, maybe he wanted to make it look like an SM? :p Or rides it predominantly on pavement. Russian Bear fucked around with this message at 02:31 on Jan 22, 2011 |

It's crazy, yeah, but it's pretty limited by the dirt gearing (look at that huge sprocket), the knobbies, and the tiny brakes. That thing won't be doing anything crazy on the street beside crossing it to get to the next trail.

It has 'crosser power delivery combined with 55hp(!), a dirt bike brake setup and knobblies. It would be a peculiar combination of pain in the rear end and hand grenade as a street bike, without quite a bit of work doing to make it behave itself. "MX bikes not much good on tarmac" - when did this become controversial?

When sumos became the new CA go-to bike CR500s are awesome, two strokes are awesome, huge crazy CR500 sumo conversions are pretty much the most awesome thing ever. Throw some 17s, a 320mm front brake on there, and more realistic gearing and have yourself the best time ever... Till you wheelie off a cliff or shoot a piston through your nuts, whatever comes first (premix on a streetbike with a tiny tank would be a huge PITA).

Sure, but a crosser engine is not what you'd want for a road-going supermoto. You need an engine that can do the bits in between full and closed throttle, to start with.

Saga posted:Sure, but a crosser engine is not what you'd want for a road-going supermoto. You need an engine that can do the bits in between full and closed throttle, to start with. This is basically the biggest complaint with CR500 Sumos that I've heard. They're no fun in reality because the engine is all wrong for street riding. You can't fix close ratio gearboxes with sprocket changes.

I'm sure you can tune a CR500 quite easily changing around the pipe to suit more of a midrange powerband. Also the motor is probably less of a hand grenade than any race 4t engine out there. The top ends on 500s last quite a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if the pipe on it is a Gnarly pipe which would put the power a lot more down low. It's still going to be a very silly bike to have for street purposes. The cooling system will not do real well sitting in traffic. The range will be awful and premixing is a royal pain in the rear end.

Looks good, I'd bargain him down a bit because the tires are old. For 2k that'd be a great bike to compliment the DRZ on faster roads and longer touring. Even at $2300 that's fair. Those bikes are known for going the distance, too.

Any thoughts on this one? http://portland.craigslist.org/yam/mcy/2178238755.html '83 Honda Ascot VT500 for $500 - 20k miles, needs headlight, speedo and tach. May call him up tomorrow and see if I can arrange a test ride on it to see how she runs. Guess I really just want to know if anyone here has had any experience on the Honda Ascots since it looks like Honda only made them for the US in '83 and '84. Everything I'm reading online so far is just good reviews on it, especially for a starter bike. Edit: Blah, apparently finding decent parts for the Ascot is a pain in the rear end. I'm just going to wait until my tax return and my bonus at work to buy something a little more current. CubanRefugee fucked around with this message at 22:48 on Jan 25, 2011 |
