If you like The Benson Interruption TV show but thought it was annoying that Doug took two hours of material and edited it down to twenty two minutes, you'll like it because it's literally an unedited version of The Benson Interruption.

Also, has the Smodcast been around long enough to where you can see Smith going from no weed to being a total stoner? He kept bringing it up until Marc had to comment on it.

Absolutely. Any Smods from before Zack and Miri came out was pre-stoner, and any from after it came out are stoner Smods. Also the few immediately after Z&M are uncomfortable hours long cry-a-thons about how unfair it is that the movie didn't make Apatow levels of money.

I'm definitely of the opinion that the pre-stoner days were way better, but there's still great stuff to be found in the newer eps as well. I don't remember the episode number, but there's one where Mosier tells the story of the time he tried cocaine that had me crying, it was so funny.

Also, if you decide you like Smodcast, you should givet Tell Em Steve-Dave a try. Bry and Walt are both deeply hosed up individuals in equal but opposite ways. I always enjoy listening to them bounce off each other.

I enjoy TESD in a Jersey Shore kind of way. They're all pretty dim, so listening to them argue without any intelligent interjection (with the occasional exception of Quin) is like watching a trainwreck.

I'm going a trip soon and it may or not be extremely boring, so I want to have a backlog of funny podcasts to listen to if worse comes to worse. Can you guys please recommend me some? I need to narrow it down from the hundreds of suggestions in here. I need something with a humour that doesn't rely 90% on pop culture references, since I'm not from the US (and all those 'really funny' shows that are just hours of random name-dropping are extremely boring), and is at least minimally informative.

For funny podcasts, these are my favorite:

1. The Joe Rogan Experience - The format is that it's just Joe and Redban sitting around bullshitting with a comedian while baked. There are a lot of good stories, but the meat and potatoes of the podcast is when they discuss stoner philosophy and conspiracy theories. Lots of unintentional comedy. The average episode runs over two and a half hours, and if you see an episode with Joey Diaz, always make sure to download it. Edit: The topics on this one vary quite a bit. Politics, drugs, conspiracies, MMA, comedians, youtube videos.

2. Comedy Death Ray - Scott Aukerman and his comedian guests. These are almost always laugh out loud funny, and I much prefer listening to Paul F. Thompkins here doing a character than him on the Pod F. Thompkast. Edit: Not a lot of pop culture references, just a lot of characters and games.

3. Doug Loves Movies - They're usually pretty funny, and they have the always popular Leonard Maltin game. Edit: It's mostly about movies, so as long as you're familiar movies, you'll be good.

4. Smodcast - Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier bullshitting and coming up with funny ideas and scenarios. They rely on blowjob jokes too much sometimes and Kevin's stoner laugh gets to be obnoxious, but when they're on, they're loving hilarious. I've laughed harder at this podcast than any other. Edit: They make pop culture references, but I think the blowjob jokes are pretty universal.

Walking With Michelle would be great for your trip. Very, very funny, and the opposite of pop culture references.

Stand-up Michelle Biloon and a comedian friend visit different tourist traps in the U.S. and give their own style of a "walking tour" commentary. You can learn all about the giant fat people that populate Universal Studios in California, or about the overly-polite-but-secretly-nasty people that live in Seattle and all kinds of places in between. The James Adomian episode (#4) is a fan favorite.

I’ve been working for the past 6 months with the podcast section of iTunes on a precident-setting new infrastructure, by which the most popular podcasts can charge a small fee from your iTunes account, instead of asking the audience to leave the site and link to the show’s site and sign up for a whole new subscription. In the coming days, in fact, you’ll see us roll out a new super small fee per full (over 2 hours, in most cases) version of the Chat Show on iTunes. For years now, music lovers have paid $9.99 or more for an album that’s usually an hour or less in length. This experiment of ours dares to declare that the time has come for the audience to pay 99 cents, or $1.99, for over 2 hours of entertainment in the form of a podcast. Steve Jobs and Apple didn’t change the way we get our favorite music and support our favorite artists by giving the content away for free, so why should those of us who work every day to provide a live weekly show not have the same relationship with our audience?

At first I found him somewhat abrasive, but after listening to several episodes I found that sure, he pisses and moans a lot. I think that's really one of the most endearing aspects of the show for me. Every rant that he goes on he seems to be self aware enough to stop, take a step back, and say, "Yeah all that pisses me off or makes me uneasy, but I'm a huge loving baby with emotional issues anyway."

The shows that I would say really got me hooked-in were the Louis C.K. two-parter, and the Carlos Mencia (unofficial) two-parter. The Dane Cook interview wasn't bad either. It was nice hearing Dane squirm.

I pretty much always skip the first 10 minutes or so of Maron's podcasts. Maron's problem is similar to Carolla's: both old ranting guys who feel the need to rant so much that they have several shows a week, thus overexposing their points of view. They'd both be better suited to do a weekly podcast with one stellar guest and more emphasis on the guest and not their own nonsense.

Would you say that the opening rants on Carolla or WTF detract from the interviews though? I totally understand the viewpoint of people not wanting to hear a stranger bitch incessantly for ten minutes. At the same time though, I feel like the rants give a level connection between the audience and host which I feel a lot of podcasts lack.

edit: Please don't think I'm trying to White Knight Maron or Corolla. I'm more arguing podcasting styles. The rants annoy me too sometimes. I just feel like the shows wouldn't be the same without it.
