I'm always impressed by Yukimura Makoto's ability to express really profound things with both the art and the words. Planetes was the same for me. Amazing how much emotional impact she can get out of something as simple as "You have no enemies."

I've been reading Vinland Saga since the beginning of its parution, and just bought all of Planetes on impulse after reading this thread, and it is awesome.
So, thanks, thread.

So, I'm thinking about fixing the OP with better images and links/ information. Anyone have suggested replacement pics for both Vinland Saga/ Historie for the missing images and any new information to add?

I am also considering changing the thread title to be a bit more general, since this thread has been from the get go not just Vinland Saga but also "manga about western history" or whatever. So, should the thread be diversified to be just... that, or should it be HISTORICAL MANGAS in general (which would get us Asian history too, which is less unique and possibly historical/ realistic)?

Want to expand the thread at the very least to be about Otoyomegatari, which is fantastic.

If you don't plan to already, then it would be tip top if you were to include Cesare. It's about a naive university student in Renaissance Italy who runs in the same circle as Cesare Borgia and comes to be friends with him amongst Cesare's PLOTTING and INTRIGUE. It's fantastic.

edit:

Oh and here is a good Vinland Saga image:

Here is a bigger version if you want.

If you use that, you might wanna rehost it. Waffleimages was being a dick.

edit again:
By the way, for anyone who just discovered Otoyomegatari, consider reading Emma. Same author and also pretty great.

I was going to object to expanding the scope too much, as that would end up leaving us open to the millions of samurai manga that exist, but drat if I'm not in love with Otoyomegatari pretty much at first sight. I think we could somehow distinguish manga that are really a good showcase for their unique setting from manga that just put their story in generic historical context, as the feudal setting is so familiar and generic to a Japanese audience.

Also seconding Cesare as a really great historical manga that a new OP could stand to put a spotlight on.

The author has done a bunch of manga about actual maids in actual England, too. Would those also qualify for the Chillax Historical Fiction Megathread?

I liked the first two-page spread in Historie. There aren't many of them!

This gives the historical kernel at the heart of Vinland Saga.

Neither of those seem especially riveting, though. It's a shame that "I hate Vikings!" and the farm stuff are spoilers.

OP here. Firstly, you made me sad as I thought a new issue of Vinland came out.

Cesare is an awesome manga and I plan to check out Otoyomegatari & Emma this evening.

Feel free to make a new thread. I started it off with general background on Vinland and desired to highlight some historical manga but there didn't seem to be much interest. I'd love to see a thread helping discover similar manga, so go for it. I love the image I used in the OP of the viking boat charge, and I assume the horse-punching image is another popular one. Depends on your focus.

No real need for a new OP, I was just going to edit it in. Of course, if you're around, you can always do it yourself and save me the effort too!

Especially if you have the original (and now) broken images that you had in the OP because those were pretty good!

I'll try revamping the OP soon, though if we want to highlight a select group of awesome historical manga, it might be difficult for people to discover them with the current header.

Didn't realize some of my images died, any idea what the policy is with Waffleimages and deletion of images? (And why some survived?) Curious if Waffle offers method to discover what the images once were, like a thumbnail.

Except his epiphany was in part a result of punching (not killing) that guy last chapter. Still, it's important that he was upset because, "I hit someone, even though hitting him wouldn't solve anything"
I don't know where exactly this is going but it's possible he'll still be violent in self defense, or when it's obviously justified, at least.

I'm not actually sure about this development, even though I loved Farming Saga. Pacifism like this, not motivated by religion, kind of strikes me as one of those feel-good anachronisms that I was so happy didn't exist in this manga of brutal Vikings. Giving a protagonist in a historical context sympathetic modern values that are entirely inappropriate for their culture just so they don't alienate the reader really bothers me, and Vinland Saga was one of the few works that didn't.

Still, I do feel there is plenty of justification for Thorfinn's change in the story, and I am looking forward to future adventures not based on the appeal of superviolence,
so I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

These are some very Buddhist Vikings. Fear of Karma? Compassion as the highest virtue? Valhalla replaced by a sadly material hell of constant anger/pride/warfare? How is Thorfinn supposed to become Christian at this rate? :(

It's not necessarily anachronistic, I mean we've really only seen two characters who believe in pacifism and Thorfinn can't exactly lead a life killing and pillaging in Vinnland. It's sort of like atheists during various periods of history, they were rare, but it's not exactly some sort of formalized belief system that people couldn't come up with on their own.

So apparently the only way to react to a life of violence is by enjoying it and then perpetually seeking out more violence. No one ever got tired of killing and wanted a peaceful life during that time period. To say otherwise is an anachronism. Sheesh, I love horse punching as much as the next guy, but while Vinland Saga has made violence seem cool, it has never made it seem glorious.

All that sarcasm seems a bit uncalled for. I'm not throwing a fit or anything, I just have reservations. I actually thought horse punching was kind of silly, to be honest.

I'm pretty sure this will push the manga in a much more interesting direction. I'm just a bit uncomfortable about how closely Thorfinn's new ideals are to, well, modern Japanese ones. I love pacifism- heck as a kid idealistic pacifism was my favorite part of things like Gundam Wing and Trigun- but it's sitting a bit uncomfortably for me in this context. You get warrior redemption stories in history quite often, but always associated with a religious epiphany. Thorfinn here seems to have discovered pacifism largely for himself, which is not inconceivable, but seems a little... indulgent, considering a modern Japanese audience. That's all. It really is just a mild reservation for me, not some attempt at a scathing critique hidden in cautious language.

It seems hypocritical, and I'm sure when it's handled by Shounen Animé X it comes off as childish, but this can actually be competently done! I'm reminded of the fight scene in Akahige (yes I'm spoilering this, it's a movie worth watching) Mifune's character disables a bunch of gangsters (dislocating their bones and such) and then immediately begins to heal them (relocates a gangster's jaw/tells another protagonist to "tend to them").

Think Kenshin ethos but with a meaningful, compassionate follow-up.

It was present from the start with Thors' straight-up judo-punching folks. And as far as religious conversion, I'm pretty sure they're setting Thorfinn up for one'a'them.
