My grandfather was a drunk, and a drunk driver. He got into more accidents than he cared to remember, and in all but one case basically walked away without serious injury. The whole family always thought there was something about being really drunk that must help avoid traumatic injury.

einTier posted:And these are exactly the kinds of accidents where people said, "see, it's better to not wear a seat belt." I would be dead if not for my seat-belt. I was in a head-on collision with a toyota tundra in a dodge neon (thankfully he was only going about 10mph as he made the turn in front of me, unfortunately I was doing 60.) and ended up cutting my forehead on the airbag, punching the windshield hard enough to put a spider-web crack in it (wow was my hand sore, also full of glass) and knocking myself out for a few seconds. If I hadn't had my seatbelt on I'm sure I would have gone into the windshield and broken my neck at the very least. And yet my wife continues to not wear her seatbelt unless I'm in the car reminding her because it's too uncomfortable. I don't think she realizes how much that bothers/scares me, even though I've told her it's "a lot". insta posted:Yep, they aren't quite as pillowy as the ultra-highspeed advertising videos for various manufacturers would have you believe. I have a very vivid memory of the accident and what I remember is all of a sudden the truck being very bright as it came across my headlights, and then being punched in the loving face by something enormous and white. You're exactly right, too, it's those slow-mo videos that make it appear as if it's an emergency pillow that you take a nap on. No, it's marginally softer than a bare-knuckle punch in the face from Joe-Bob "The Crusher" Jones. Jesus christ that airbag was terrifying. Again though, without that airbag I'm sure I would have suffered a pretty severe neck injury, as is it's just chronically stiff (yay nothing showing on the MRI so no money for it!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQNe4uTxJ38 If you're not wearing a seatbelt in the back seat, you turn into a flying headbutt/Tiger Knee, straight into the back of a person who is already being hit by a car in front. I posted that on my Facebook and got a bunch of "Wow, I'm going to wear my seatbelt now." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6Qhmdk4VNs This one tries harder, but is almost comical.
