Just an FYI

Disney sent me an e-mail yesterday saying the blu-rays for Pinocchio, Snow White and Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 are going in the vault on April 30th, so buy them before it's too late.

What does this mean, they're stopping production of new copies?

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind reviewed, finally:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Eternal-Sunshine-of-the-Spotless-Mind-Blu-ray/16770/

quote:

After a showing on HD-DVD what seems like ages ago—April 2007—followed by a Japanese Blu-ray release that was snapped up by eager importers, Eternal Sunshine finally makes it to Blu-ray in the U.S. with a 1080p/AVC-encoded transfer that's much better than merely acceptable but just shy of great. By and large, this is a satisfying high definition presentation and an immediately appreciable upgrade from the DVD. Clarity is not quite exemplary, but is certainly strong, with ample fine detail visible in the pores and whiskers on Jim Carrey's face, the patterns of cloth, and the textures and lines of in-focus background objects. Color also seems accurate to Gondry and cinematographer Ellen Kuras' intent, vacillating between warm early memories and the cold, ghostly palette of the flight through Joel's mind. (Of course, Clementine's ever-changing hair hues are always ultra-vibrant.) That said, there are a few minor issues that keep Eternal Sunshine from looking its best. Although grain appears entirely natural through much of the film, certain scenes have a slightly filtered, more artificial-looking quality—as if smoothed out with some light DNR—and there are also telltale traces of edge enhancement at times. Black levels also have a tendency to be a bit too dense, occasionally robbing the image of some of its shadow detail. However, none of these quibbles would keep me from picking up this disc. Eternal Sunshine still looks appropriately dreamy.

I bought the UK LIFE box set and when I play it through my ps3 it says it's in 1080i, but on the back of the box it says its 1080p. I tried Inglorious Basterds and it said it's 1080/24p. Is there any reason for this? I'm new to the HDTV thing (got it and ps3 last november), so i just want to experience the best possible picture. It still looks amazing though.

It would've been shot in 1080i, because the UK broadcasting standard is 25 frames per second, which the HD spec can only do 1080i/25 and not 1080p/25, so you're getting the best the format can do.

It's a 1080p25 encode flagged as 1080i50.

It wouldn't look any different/better if the BluRay spec did 1080p25, the two fields get weaved together by the TV (2:2 pulldown).

Season 3 is a couple weeks away from release, and Image has just announced Twilight Zone: Season 4 with a release date of May 17th. I wish other studios would do this with their TV shows. If I weren't already committed to buying every TZ release, it'd certainly make me feel more confident that I won't just buy a season or two before they cut support.

Just watched this last night and it's the "Unrated" cut - which I believe is just the version released into UK theaters, though I could be wrong - and I'm a little let down that the American theatrical cut isn't included on the bluray. Scenes are moved around, the timing's off in some key scenes, there are alternate takes used (some with alternate dialogue), it's just not the same. I'll be hanging on to the DVD.

Sucks that, if these are the only SKU's, we don't get a dvd of classic Tron. I rarely have the opportunity to use the dvd's they pack into blu-rays anyway, but considering all dvd versions are out of print, it would've been nice to get one anyway. It'd also be a shame if it's all in one big case instead of separate cases, but I suppose that's what custom cases are for: circumventing collector-unfriendly decisions.
