I havent even bothered to go in there since i've been back, the entire highstreet is just depressing because it's so run down.

There used to be this awesome little bookshop down by Greigs near Asda. It was one of those non chain ones, but it had a bit of everything including some really cool art supplies. It closed down well over a decade ago though. :smith:

What Waterstones needs to do is move out from the highstreet and go somewhere like the Retail park where it could get a much bigger shop and a lot more people would have access to it. The highstreet is just too awkward to get into these days and all the other high traffic stores are out there too.

College Slice
The good
1. Charlies Egypt bit
2. Jimmys interview (he does a good job at these, and it got to end too!)
3. Larens library bit
4. Charlie and Laurens 'live' bit (I really thought something had gone wrong at first, until Charlie dropped the script)
5. Davids monologue though he was piling on the pomposity a bit thick.
6. The newspaper review because they had something good to riff on.

The bad
1. Davids debate - no bad guy this time, people talking over each other, no control urgh.
2. Larens ed milliband bit - everyone just looked confused, with nothing to say.
3. Davids interview - much better than the last two because this time he had an angle to make some jokes against a interviewee who let him make them, but still a weak interview, this is much more Davids level for interviewee.
4. Jimmys NHS bit - he just looks a bit too smug doing it.
5. Jimmys opening monologue

I think the shows finding its feet, but they really need something good to riff on or the show falls flat.
The audience is a problem though, they applaud at the wrong times like they feel they have to, they should really be more in the background.

Thought it was a step back, myself. Carr's NHS skit was a series of punchlines, they put down roots for some really biting satirical stuff last week :(

And what was with the interview bits? The sun emissions topic is really loving out there, Carr could have gone nuts with that; Mitchell didn't interview the Green MP so much as they fired talking points at each other for ten minutes. I'd really, really love them to play up the comedy more, it's what they're good at! - but I suppose that'd mean going pre-recorded.

The Dundee Borders closed because Borders went into administration and closed all 45 of their stores.

On top of that the Dundee Borders was in a small retail park that contained a Matalan, a JJB gym and some mothercare type store i think. It was located in what was typically known as the lovely end of town next to the docks where there are also no shops of high interest. It's also not that easy to get into and involves navigating a retarded series of roundabouts and traffic lights.

The retail park in Falkirk is quite large; is located just outside the town centre on one of the main roads leading into the town centre; contains the Tesco superstore, Halfords, Homebase, Next, JJB, Argos, Mc Donalds, Pizza Hut, Curry's/Comet The Early Learning Centre, Maplins, the multiscreen Cineworld and many more shops that were typically found on the highstreet in years gone by. It's also directly across the road from the train station and is free to park there.

So yes, a Waterstones there would be a much better idea than being stuck on a run down highstreet that's hard to gain quick access to.

The thing is, well designed and populated retail parks are actually improved versions of high streets.

Old towns like Falkirk have a bad habit of having a centre not designed with modern forms of transport in mind. As such they end up as a mishmash of roads, single one way systems, junctions and oddly shaped shopping centres in order to give people easier forms of access.

Along comes a retail park with a huge number of parking spaces with two or more easy routes of access and all the big chain stores flock to it because it will naturally have a higher footfall.

edit: Just finished watching 10 live on 4+1 and i think if there's another series they can film it in front of a live audience if they like, but it needn't be shot "live" live. That would help with all the pacing issues.

I'm guessing you didn't do photography for a-level then. I did, it was the most retarded course i've ever done. I love photography as a hobby, but you don't need a full 2 years a levels and then another 3 years degree to be able to take good pictures. Past the basics like learning what the exposure triangle is and composition, all you need to do to be a good photographer is to keep taking pictures.

About a million years after first posting about it, I finally finished State of Play. Wow! I think I may need some time to digest. And maybe a rewatch, knowing what I know now.

Up to this point I'd been thinking "yeah, it's pretty good, but I don't see what all the hyperbole is about." But it all comes together in a big way in the last episode. Very mature, involved plot, very complex relationships, very textured performances. Everyone is a well-realized human being. Interesting exploration of the intersection between personal and professional relationships. Cal doesn't seem to have any relationships that don't muddle his personal and professional spheres, and boy it's like he can't turn around without getting his obligations tangled up. In the end everyone is morally compromised and nobody is really a winner. Good stuff.

E: Oh yeah, last time I posted was about Ashes to Ashes about a month ago, just wanted to say that even after a month's reflection, it still just leaves a completely sour taste in my mouth. If I show Life on Mars to anyone, I don't think I'll mention to them that there's a sequel.

Glad you liked it :) I found it in HMV just after watching Life on Mars and was suffering John Simm withdrawal, now I hold it up as a benchmark of how good British drama is.

Speaking of John Simm / Philip Glenister tv, has anyone heard anything good about Mad Dogs? http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2011/feb/05/simm-glenister-mad-sdogs-sky I don't have Sky so trying to decide how much effort to put into seeing it. I don't think I've ever seen John Simm in anything disappointing, he seems quite choosy in his roles.
