hooptyjr posted:For some reason every drum pattern I program in Reason sounds "dead". I can't get any soul infused in these drums no matter how hard I try. Any tips on how to make programmed drums sound more "organic"? This is a bit of a late response, and it only works in some situations, but I've sometimes had great success using the ReGroove mixer on a particularly dull beat. Redrum's pattern sequencer has 16 rigid steps whereas when you're writing a pattern in the main song editor you can be much more precise if you're trying to add a lot of swing and "live"-ness. Here's a brief explanation: Take a pattern in Redrum, right click on the Redrum, pick "Copy Pattern to Track", then disable pattern select on the Redrum sequencer (you probably know this part at least) Then open the ReGroove mixer in the Song Editor, pick a pattern in Channel A1, and tweak the slide/shuffle settings to your liking. Then - and this isn't very obvious, but whatever, it took me months to get it - in the pulldown menu next to your Redrum channel (the one in between to the big red record button and the Lane Mute button) pick your pattern. Instant swing. Also, what that other guy said was right - the Kong Drum machine (I think he kept calling it a Korg? lol) is way more bangin' than Redrum when it comes to default settings alone, so you can maybe start with a pattern you like and then put the notes on Kong drums instead.

I'm pretty sure there isn't actually a way to do this (I don't want to call you a liar... but I dream plenty of cool poo poo about DAWs). Back in the day (when I had motivation...) I exported all of my Reason MIDI to Live and ran into the same thing. It's really not a problem though; I mean if you use the Arrange page in Live your full Reason arrangement copies right over so it's just a matter of arranging your tracks 'properly' in Reason, and putting External Instruments on your new tracks in Live, that correspond to the right device in Reason.

^^^ Yeah, maybe I did dream it ahaha...but I remember it so clearly! Thanks for the reply though, you're right it's not too big a deal to deal with all the MIDI at once, just annoying.

Always be skeptical of the quality of stylish products made by a company that doesn't normally manufacture that kind of product. For not much more than they are asking for those you can get BeyerDynamic DT770s, Ultrasone Pro-650s, AKG K271s or some other ridiculously high quality piece of equipment.

Jesus christ I'm having a hell of a time transferring arturia softsynth licenses to a new dongle, since the old one was destroyed. I hate this. gently caress dongles, I get that piracy is a problem but don't punish your legit customers AND make them waste a USB port like this arturia.

Something I've started to experiment with has been using a new kind of production method in the style of Wolfgang Gartner. Here's a video showing what I mean. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2XpyNYB11U I'm still working on building something decent with it. Anyone have any advise for using this technique?

At least you can take the Reason/Record dongle out after you've opened the program, and you just need to plug it in to save. Still annoying, but at least you have the option of just logging in with your propellerhead credentials if you don't have the dongle or are too baked to want to get up and get it.

The most important thing about that real popular gartner sound is to keep all your samples in key, that's the reason why they're jiving together rather than sounding like noise. Try this, create a synth line and bounce it up and down a scale and tweak the filter, envelopes and LFO settings like a mad man. After you have done this for a while, recording the sounds, create another(different) synth and play the exact same line while tweaking more parameters. Do it again and again till you have a little "library" of these sounds to call upon. When arranging, put the "glitch" clips on ever 1/4th and/or 1/8th bar and play around with it till it sounds nice. Oh, and don't forget when your composing the line to go up and down octaves.

I've been wondering about how to create a particular 'wobble', I suppose. I would call it more of a 'telephone ringing' sound than a wobble, though. I hear it all the time in Mass Effect (goonsire) and recently I've caught its brief use in a few dubstep/brostep/etc tunes. Here's an example: @3:10 in Forgot About Breaks I have some idea of how it's done (square wave LFOs?) but can't seem to get the 'rhythm' or the harmonics right - it always just sounds like a really generic ringer. This can be accomplished with Massive, no? EDIT: I guess this should be in the 'Recreate a Particular Sound' thread. Oops. Mister Speaker fucked around with this message at 21:26 on Feb 15, 2011 |

Cross posting this from No Music Discussion where it go zero interest, maybe a few of you guys will be more interested. A friend of mine is during a musical diary, basically he has challenged himself to write at least 2 minutes of music a day. He writes experimental electronic music with influences from ambient, jungle, drone, folk and others. The aim of the experiment is not to generate a month of masterpieces but to reflect his moods and emotions over the month and generate a load of material he can come back to me. All the tracks are here: http://skink.bandcamp.com/album/six-hundred-and-seventy-two-jerk He's keeping a blog about it here: http://blahskinkblah.tumblr.com/ I think he'd really appreciate some feedback if anyone would like to give some of it a listen.
