How long should it take for Calibre to convert a file? I set it to convert a PDF rip of some Malstrom articles last night before I went to bed and it was still converting the text when I went to work this morning.

If it's just straight up plain text with no formatting it can be done in seconds, if it's a really complex one it can take a long time.

I f you also set a charge limit of $0.00 you'll never receive an emailed thing over 3G, it will instead wait for you to connect to Wi-Fi to deliver so you don't get charged. Thanks. Pressing that pressing the first letting thing is so much faster than pressing next page 30 times. I don't have wifi access in my house but do have 3G. Also, when I go travelling I can have calibre running on a friends PC, downloading the news and sending it to me to read and that's easier to access over 3G than wifi. I've found http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Calibre2opds which possibly will help share my news on personal webspace which should let me download them without having to pay 3G charges.

Sad Panda posted:edit : Is there some way to have Calibre e-mail the news subscriptions it downloads straight to my Kindle so I can get it over 3G rather than having to plug it in? Waking up in the morning and turning my Kindle on to read the news would be so much more awesome than having to walk all the way to my computer to plug it in. To be specific, if you tell Calibre to email news to yourname@free.kindle.com, your Kindle will only download it over wifi--a wifi download is always, always free. If you email something to yourname@kindle.com, it'll download over 3G for a fee if wifi isn't available. You seem to have everything under control, but I don't know how http/opds downloads over 3G work, and whether they entail a fee or not. For people who have a wifi-only Kindle, it's a moot point, as every download is free. Also, check my post history in this thread for some more screensavers--the second post has 10 nicely contrast-adjusted Gustave Dorč engraving, whereas I've uploaded a few hundred somewhat darker engravings. Choose wisely.

Sure, the primary use is primarily for pirated books, just like PS3 backup managers are primarily used for pirating games. Since either one can conceivably be used for legitimate content, it's ok to talk about them.

As I already said, the vast majority of manga series are unlicensed. You're right as to onepiece/bleach etc - I'll remove them from the post. That said, it's a little like the TV poo poo of the last couple of years; the licenser (the Australian one, at least) is a year behind. Does that make it okay? No, but it means that the majority of people interested in the series are going to be reading the scanlations anyway and then possibly purchase the volumes when they're released. quote:Maybe if there was an actual manga e-book that you needed to upload or could actually buy, it would be pretty fine, ok. The reason I posted it was because it was for personal use, but nothing else like it really exists so I decided to share it. The reason I posted it _here_ was because this is the only ebook thread on the entire forum and seemed the logical place. Maybe if there was an ereader application thread, but there's a grand total of about 6 kindle applications, limited access to the sdk, and those ereaders that can run applications (nook color etc) are all android and come under the android application threads. All in all, I doubt there's enough interest to warrant a thread by itself for an ereader application thread - there's not that many questions about calibre.

I just started paying more attention to the battery life on my Nook (E-ink), and I seem to be getting about a week and a half out of it. This is with the wireless turned off, reading maybe 30 minutes a day average, and just idling showing the screensaver for the majority of the time. Does this seem low? I'm curious as to what everyone else is getting. I didn't really pay attention before, I'd just recharge every week or so, but recently I had it completely drain a couple times without me realizing it. According to the battery meter on the settings screen, it's losing about 10% of the charge every 24 hours. radiatinglines posted:also, this is the gooniest thread ever. and I mean that in a bad way

I know the screen doesn't draw power, but it turns on so much faster when you have the screensaver up versus when you turn it off that I suspect something is still on.

In it, you have to go through page by page and mark text as text and pictures as a picture to get the best result. It will export as a .DOC file. ACV doesn't really work as well on the NC for some reason, maybe I'm just weird and picky I don't know. At any rate, comics are okay but not great. The screen is a bit too tiny, which is super disappointing. Really good scans are good enough, but if you've got a mediocre scan of a comic from the 80's or 90's before they started using the bright stock of paper it's a little iffy. I don't really enjoy zooming and floating around on the page, i like a one-page thing and to be totally honest the screen is a bit too tiny. I'm real interested to get my hands on a 9-10" tablet to see the real difference, but for the NC I'd give it an "okay, not awesome, it'll do" kinda rating.
