Snowy posted:Maron's show is ultimately all about him, regardless of the guest. I feel like he lets them tell their stories so he gets opportunities to talk about himself, like a comedy Charlie Rose. Maron had this joke few years ago about Emotional Vampires who drain you with their presence, with him usually walking away by saying "I'm sorry I have no more to give. Find someone else because you're draining me of my lifeforce." I feel like he has become that Vampire. He's using the podcast to unload his poo poo onto listeners. It's a form of therapy for him but ultimately makes his listeners unhappy when they wallow in Maron's misery and stories of broken relationships. I still download his podcast but only if the guest is interesting and I always skip the monologue. The trick to WTF is to have your finger on the fast forward button.

The latest 40 Year Old boy has to be one of the best ever... IMHO.... Mike Covered a lot more emotional depth but with the same hilarity... Also going through NNF Year one... Anyone have suggestions in that year?

Gotta fix that soon.

Patton's way too good at the game to win that cheaply, he didn't even answer anything! The Spider-Man musical sounds fabulously awful.

Pardo used to drive me crazy, but my brother bought me a subscription to NNF so I figured I should give him another chance. He's slowly growing on me. Still can be annoying, but I like how cranky he is. I just listened to the most recent episode of NNF with Conan, and I'm not sure what I thought. Conan leaned pretty heavily on the "I'm stuck up celebrity (haha not really)" bit, which starts to make people genuinely unlikable after a while. But then, he may have just been trying to fit in on the podcast.

Someone who listens to NNF religiously, give us an update on that steak dinner with Conan and the NNF crew if they say what happened. I am in suspense! And I agree that Maron uses his podcast to work through his own poo poo and unload it on us. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, can help us work through things as well when they are openly spoken about.

If anyone unsubscribed to Podcast Eating Contest because of the belching, give it another try. They seem to have ceased it completely, and are making consistently funny shows. Rucky Bager had me cramping up, and their reboot game is one of my favorite podcast games anyone plays.

Mike and Tom Eat Snacks is the best absurdist podcast I've ever heard. It's really, really good. Three episodes are up; looks like they are once a week - 10 days or so. Walking With Michelle (not my podcast, but my sister's podcast, who does have an account and is therefore a goon) just got the rough cut of the latest show. It's Michelle and Maria Bamford at the Atlanta Aquarium. Subscribe now so you don't miss it!

They were in Atlanta together doing shows at Laughing Skull and picked the Aquarium there. I suggested the Segway tour of downtown Atlanta, but it was during that freak cold snap a few weeks ago, so I was outvoted. Who would you like her to invite on a walk?

I loving love when CDR Radio gets absurd. PARAPHRASING: "He just yells 'YOLK FROM EGG' whenever he gets angry or excited. You know which one he is from his inflection" "What about if he's neutral?" "....He mouths it." Also, I can't believe I watched Old Dogs. It is insanely awful.

Was anyone else startled to hear him say "gently caress" so much?

Vertigus posted:I started listening to WTF because of Marc Maron's cred, his Conan appearance, etc. It's sort of important to understand that he was kind of successful during the 80's-90's stand-up boom. Around that time there were TONS of TV stand-up shows, even on network TV. MTV even had a stand-up show. He did pretty well for himself. Apparently he's been on Conan more than any other comedian. In his emotional problems you have to consider him as a kind of second generation Richard Lewis.

Just skip the first 10-20 minutes. I usually can't make it through the intros. My other big problem with Maron is his choice in guests. I like that he goes so in depth in his interviews, and doesn't shy away from any topics. But his guests are all the same! They're all his buddies from the comedy scene 15-20 years ago. They all tell the same stories about comedy clubs. Talk to some writers or... anybody else really. Regular people, whatever. He's a good interviewer, but all the interviewees sound the same.

The alt comedy community really isn't that big, and as you can tell by the podcast network, everybody works with everybody. I think he's loving awesome and would love to see him get a roundtable type of show on HBO or some other grown-up network. In the interest of disclosure, he was kind enough to have us as his guests at his show last night and couldn't have been nicer. Took such care. I brought him soup.

Getting people he didn't really know and were more at the fringes of the comedy scene: Rollins, Gallagher, Tobolowski, Smith. But, whatever, I admit it - I'm a Maron apologist. I love all of WTF, even the complaining in the beginning. It's so interesting getting a peek into his mind and psyche.

I think that's what bugs me about him, I still think he's a stereotypical 'bitter old comedian' and all but like, he seems like a really NICE bitter old comedian, which makes it hard to really dislike him much. He seems like a guy I'd genuinely enjoy talking to, even if I dislike a lot of things he says or something.

Bottom line: whether you like him or not he's getting some interesting people to talk about interesting things that they might not otherwise talk about were he not prodding them to talk about it. He's like a comedy Donahue. Nadine: Are you talking about a live show? Your post is a bit vague.
