Set for an April 5th release.

Sony officially announced this today and they scored the rights to laserdisc commentary with Scorsese and Paul Schrader (guess it was Criterion returning the favor for Sony licensing them a few movies for the BBS boxset)

quote:

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has officially announced Taxi Driver for Blu-ray release on April 5, in a 35th Anniversary edition. This gritty urban drama, written by Paul Schrader, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert De Niro as a man driven to violence by loneliness and desperation, won the 1976 Palme d'Or at Cannes and was nominated to four Academy Awards. In a welcome initiative, SPHE has licensed the use of the original Scorsese/Schrader audio commentary previously only available on the Laserdisc.

As previously reported (see Blu-ray.com, January 27), the film has received a 4K digital restoration from the original negative, which will be presented and screened at the Berlin Film Festival this week.

Special features include:

- Director Martin Scorsese and writer Paul Schrader (recorded in 1986 by The Criterion Collection)

Warner Home Video Celebrates Four Decades of Visionary Filmmaker on May 31

A Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray™

Stanley Kubrick: Limited Edition Collection

9-Film Blu-ray Collection Includes Blu-ray Debuts, Premium Packaging, New Bonus Features & Hard Cover Book

Stanley Kubrick: The Essential Collection

9-Film DVD Collection includes 40-Page Book

Burbank, Calif., February 14, 2011 – Stanley Kubrick was one of the great filmmakers of our time and his profound influence on motion pictures continues to this day. His 1971 film, A Clockwork Orange, starring Malcolm McDowell, portrayed an oppressive lawless society where man was reduced to little more than a machine. This was a powerful film made by a director at the height of his artistry and its impact generated worldwide controversy.

On May 31, Warner Home Video will honor Kubrick with A Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray ($34.99 SRP). The two-disc release includes two newly-produced bonus features: Turning Like Clockwork, a 25 minute documentary about the film’s “Ultra-violence” and its cultural impact, and a short documentary where Malcolm McDowell reminiscences on closely working with legendary director Stanley Kubrick. This two disc Edition will also include the feature-length documentaries: Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures and O Lucky Malcolm! The 40th Anniversary Edition will be packaged in a 40-page Blu-ray Book with rare photos, production notes and more.

A Clockwork Orange introduced into popular culture the concept of “ultra-violence,” as singing-, tap-dancing-, derby-topped hooligan Alex (McDowell) has a “good time” – at the tragic expense of others. His journey from amoral punk to brainwashed proper citizen and back again forms the dynamic arc of Kubrick’s future-shock vision of Anthony Burgess’ novel. 40 years later, the world is a different place but the film’s power still entices, shocks and mesmerizes today.

A Clockwork Orange 40th Anniversary Edition is also available On Demand and for Download from iTunes™, including bonus iTunes™ extra content. Additionally,Lolita, Barry Lyndon, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut will be available On Demand and for Download.

On the same day, continuing the celebration, WHV will release the Stanley Kubrick: Limited Edition Collection on Blu-ray ($148.95 SRP) -- an unprecedented 9-film, 10-disc collection, which contains every film the director made since1960. The collection features the film and bonus content from A Clockwork Orange 40thAnniversary Edition, the Blu-ray debuts of Lolita and Barry Lyndon, as well as the feature films Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut. The Blu-ray collection will be elegantly boxed in new book-style premium packaging and will include a 40-page hard-cover book that explores the breadth of genres and themes in Kubrick’s work. The same group of films will be available on DVD in Stanley Kubrick: The Essential Collection ($74.92 SRP), which includes a 40-page soft-cover book.

Just a reality check: we don't know that Barry Lyndon and Lolita won't be released separately - it's a pretty dick thing to do considering the others were already released years ago, and publishers have shown they aren't ALWAYS that cruel.

And the non-WB discs in the set (Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove) are most likely the Universal and Sony authorings, on license for use in this set. The odds of WB taking their own crack at those films is pretty low.

I don't think anybody said that Barry Lyndon or Lolita were going to be exclusive to the box, just that the bundle looks like a must buy (considering a $150 MSRP means it can range between $75-120 at Amazon which is a great deal for 9 movies plus a book and documentary on Kubrick)

And we don't know that. Criterion did new transfers of movies they licensed from Sony/MGM/Universal. Can't see why Warner wouldn't do the same since they are rolling out the red carpet and Spartacus' transfer loving blows.

Criterion licenses films for general retail releases. Box sets are treated differently, especially by big studios - it's more like borrowing. Fox's Mel Brooks box set includes Blazing Saddles, a WB flick - but the Blu-ray is literally just WB's Blu-ray stuck in there.

I'd love for WB to fix Spartacus, don't get me wrong. But just don't get your hopes up is all.

This is the best and worst news of the day. :(

Warner used to be a great studio, but they are really getting obnoxious with the collector's sets. Criterion would make a fortune off Killer's Kiss, let alone Warner on Lolita. I know they'll eventually put out single editions, but this is a dick move to all those who already bought all of the available Kubrick titles.

The 2nd disc of Clockwork Orange is a Blu-Ray, and O Lucky Malcolm will be HD... however, A Life in Pictures is SD. No current plans for separate releases of Lolita and Barry Lyndon.

I don't really care about the transfer of Spartacus since I'm not a fan of the movie, but for those who are fans, I hope they update it. I'm curious about whether or not the Strangelove extras will be ported over. Even though I rarely watch extras more than once, it's always nice to know they're there.

Honestly the director's cut adds back in a really crucial scene between Kate Hudson and Billy Crudup that kinda legitimizes their entire relationship and makes the movie much more emotionally impactful. When I saw it in theaters I loved it, but when I saw the DC with that scene it was like a lightswitch got flipped on and turned the film from "really good" to "Cameron Crowe will never top this".

Warner Home Video has just informed us that Casablanca and ALL FOUR FILMS in the Lethal Weapon series are about to go on Blu-ray and DVD moratorium (starting on 3/28). Why, you may ask? Simple: The studio has big plans for the films in 2012, as Casablanca celebrates its 70th anniversary next year, while the original Lethal Weapon celebrates its 25th anniversary. What this means is that you can expect all of these films to be fully remastered and re-released on Blu-ray and DVD in brand new Ultimate Collector's Editions, complete with new extras.

Oh dear lord how many times do I have to buy Casablanca? I think this will be #5.

Looks like all the B-list and some Dimension titles from the Miramax library are going to be distributed by Echo Bridge. Lionsgate still gets the bulk of the library and all the good stuff like Pulp Fiction.

I think it's funny how Lionsgate keeps picking up licenses to studios just to sit on hundreds of titles. They haven't released a single Republic title to Blu-Ray yet (even though an HD restoration of High Noon exists), they've barely hit the StudioCanal library, now they have Miramax to deal with. They're basically hoarding titles to keep other studios from getting them, which is probably why Criterion had to pull nearly all of their StudioCanal titles from circulation.

Don't forget Lionsgate's Paramount licenses!

But as for the Criterion situation, that was firmly in StudioCanal's hands - they've been trying to launch a unified prestige brand worldwide, not just in the US with Lionsgate. Though arguably they're failing, as you need both steady releases, and steady printings to keep releases in stock, for such a thing to work...

Question regarding Blu-Ray 3D:

Of the few Blu-Ray 3D releases out now, which would you all recommend as the best quality in showing off the medium? At roughly $40 a pop it would be a pricey mistake to pick one up and find that it's worse than the 2D version.

I was thinking either 'Alice in Wonderland' or 'Coraline', but if one of the IMAX releases blew any of your socks off I'd pick up one of them. Any thoughts?

I hate to be corny and say "Avatar" but it's probably your best bet. Otherwise, maybe wait a little while and get Herzog's doc about those caves. Alice In Wonderland was post-production 3d and I can't really speak for Coraline but in 2d it was phenomenal.

Coraline's 3D in theaters was fantastic. Only Avatar has done a better job of it. There is a scene in the finale of Coraline where the 3D literally made my jaw drop.

I would get 'Avatar' on 3D blu-ray in a heartbeat if it weren't for the fact that until 2012 the only way to do so is to get it packaged with a Panasonic TV or pay an absurd amount for it second-hand through Amazon or some such e-tailer.

[rant]It boggles my mind that the execs behind the movie that could legitimize the aquisition of a 3D home-theater setup would enter in to an exclusivity agreement with a TV manufacturer and lose out on all the business they would have if it were available to the general public who has a setup that doesn't include Panasonic. And to set such a long term on that exclusivity is ridiculous.[/rant]

Yeah I've been leaning in 'Coraline's' direction. I've seen both movies (in 2D) and like them, but as I'm looking for something that would be enjoyable with repeated viewings and be a good way to 'demo' my setup from what I've read it seems that 'Coraline' fits that bill better than 'Alice'.
