Almost off topic, but sixteen seems so young to be covered in racing sponsors. I know its like that in every sport but blegh. I wouldn't be suprised if after winning at Infineon they tossed her a AMP energy drink and hat while talking to the camera.

Energy drinks pay for tires.

I think he's saying America is prostituting a pristine youth because she's accepting money for doing something she has a talent for whilst willfully and maliciously being a girl. As opposed to a young man, for whom it would be the score of all time to hook that poo poo up at 16.

Girls in motorsports always get more deals, just look at Danica Patrick.

TheCosmicMuffet posted:I think he's saying America is prostituting a pristine youth because she's accepting money for doing something she has a talent for whilst willfully and maliciously being a girl. Less to do with her being a girl than her age, but her being a girl may have driven the 'too young to be sponsored' point home in my obviously misogynist cave man brain. Coming from public school sports, where there is little, if any, advertising it just seems weird to see a person that was my age covered in brands and logos. Don't get me wrong, I would have loved to be sponsored in school, where your helmet might be the same one your dad used 20 years prior. It's also apparent to me that racing motorcycles costs a ton of money and unless you are born into a great deal of it, you will take whatever someone gives you. But I hate women so ignore all of that.

Uh yeah, public school is the key there. Maybe in high school you could get away with that but in real life poo poo costs money and usually lots of it. Hell even my wife's crew team in college had sponsors, and motorcycle racing is only about 1000x more expensive. What do you think pays for the bikes, parts, mechanics, trailers, gear, etc, etc, etc? Talent and good faith? Give me a break. I don't think you're a misogynist, I think you are completely naive.

racing requires sponsors, that's it. You don't go anywhere without them. Kids who get into karting get sponsors before they get pubes. I think because motorsports has a lot less exposure in North America, you don't notice it so much, unlike the rest of the world where not having sponsor logos on your jersey at any level of sport is the exception rather than the rule.

Mcqueen posted:Less to do with her being a girl than her age, but her being a girl may have driven the 'too young to be sponsored' point home in my obviously misogynist cave man brain. Not seeing a woman hating bias here I've seen a number of kids sponsored. I've been on the track with a bunch of the USGPRU kids, they're all stickered up too. Basically, if you're good and young and devoted, you'll have support. Personally, I'm glad to see that she's getting the sort of support she needs, racing is never an easy place to make it and all the help any racer can get at a young age is great. It might seem like selling out, but she's out there racing and winning at the national level, and that level of support is what it takes to race and win at the national level. Don't see it as "she's so young she's all stickered up from sponsors" and instead look at it like "She's so goddamn good there's not enough space for all the people who want to support her".

I must have came off wrong, I don't not like her getting sponsors, it just surprises me, as the only sports I follow are standard American affair. I'd give my left one to be racing at 16. Hell, I was just stoked to have a learners permit and drive my beat to poo poo Nissan hardbody around at her age. After googling the USGPRU it is now my life's ambition to make a beautiful, short, lightweight child and get him/her on a 125.
