I'm happy you found another vet you feel better about. Hopefully Kaidan will keep on being painless and mobile for as long as possible!

Pi is going in to get his left eye fixed on Tuesday. The vet said she doesn't want to operate both eyes, because Pi's right eye has so much vision left that if something goes wrong with the surgery, he might end up with worse vision in that eye than he would've had without the operation. The recovery period worries me a bit. Pi'll have to wear the cone of shame without ANY breaks for 1-2 weeks and he needs to go without major exercise, chewing, barking (yeah right), playing etc. for a full month. This for a dog that's used to being active. It might be painful.

Do you get complimentary coma pills after the surgery? Maybe a large bat with which to knock him unconscious when he gets uppity?

No chewing, eh? How on earth are you going to entertain him? Licking? Frozen yogurt/banana kongs?

Unfortunately the vet had ran out of coma pills when I asked. I'll ask about the bat, though. But seriously, a friend of mine who went through this with her dog said that the dog just got depressed after a few days and stopped trying to do anything. It sounds horrible, but it made things a lot easier for them. I feel horrible Pi's having to go through this, I really hope it'll be worth it in the end.

Frozen Kongs have been very high on my (very short) list of ideas for Things That Will Keep Pi Busy. I was thinking of focusing on training/polishing the Comp Ob things that don't require running, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. He might get unwanted associations to those things ("This is what we do when my eye hurts/I'm wearing this stupid cone/when I don't get to do anything else"). I'm horrible with teaching tricks. Competitions give me motivation to work with my dogs, and if that's taken out of the picture, training becomes much more of a chore for me.

Wow, that all sounds like it went really great! I like the sound of this vet, too, it's important to get a while history like that and look at the big picture. Surgery is a huge thing to go through, and you definitely don't want to put Kaiden through it before you have to. I definitely want to see the Xrays, too!! I love seeing that sort of stuff, and I'm really curious to see how bad his hips really are.

Wolf hybrid :words:

I know it's already been said, but this is DEFINITELY not a good idea. You don't just "get your hands on" a malamute and start churning out puppies. Like Foxy posted, there's a HUGE write up on both wolves and hybrids linked in the OP, and you can see how even "reputable" breeders of hybrids are still questionable. Breeding service dogs is hard work, and you can't just randomly throw dogs together to create them. You need to fiercely look at temperament and create a solid breeding plan and idea of where you want the dogs to go in the future outside of looks alone. Wolves are super shy, and you need a solid personality to go out in public, and northern breeds are super energetic and don't like to listen. Also, wolves don't have the natural instincts that dogs do to understand human body language and voice, so they're much harder to train, definitely not ideal for a service dog. It seems like that guy managed to get lucky with the dog he has now, you really want something more biddable and reliable to give the line a future.

If you look at the section about wolf-like dog breeds, you might be able to find something closer to what you want, in a much easier to handle dog. You don't even need to get a purebred, though, since lots of German Shepherd mixes look very wolf-like and can be adopted at a fraction of the cost, and are much easier to train.

In other news, I FINALLY have a reliable computer again, so I can go much more post crazy than before! I feel like I'm "behind" with a lot of stuff around here, just because I got SO sick of constantly having to post from a freakin' iPad...

Rho's look much much better than Kaidan's, that's for sure. And thanks for the words, guys. I'm definitely happy that we don't need to put him through that right now, and also that my worries about 7-8 years old being "too late" were somewhat baseless. Here's the x-ray of his hips, we had her do one of his spine as well since when you pet him you can feel it protrude a little, but it's completely normal and our vet said that it was more likely just a result of his size.

You can see his left (our right) joint is very shallow. They've also all said that his right is moderate at well.

REBIRTH OF HARDCORE PRIDE!
Yeah exactly, he weighed in at 43 pounds yesterday which is right around where we've been trying to keep him since we learned about it. Another thing the vet mentioned yesterday is that she was surprised when she was manipulating and examining that joint that it didn't pop out at all which you would expect to happen pretty easily given the severity of it. She also mentioned he was sensitive about one of his knees and she thinks he has something that could contribute to him easily tearing his ACL so that's something we need to keep an eye on. It will make beach trips somewhat interesting since he needs to swim, but running on sand isn't great for potential ACL issues. In good news she said that he has no sign of patellar luxation though!

I bet you've already found this, but the Canine Physical Therapy Association has a state by state listing so you can find therapy swim programs, acupuncture, etc. I know the Swimming Dog in Petaluma is really well known water therapy center, and there's also Aqua Dog.

Oh wow :( No need to compare pics, that's for sure. I only posted Rho's since I usually find it helpful to see what things should look like when evaluating changes, but Kaidan's left hip is obviously bad. It seems like there are some osteoarthritis related changes as well?

I hope you find physical therapy helpful for Kaidan, I agree it's an excellent idea!

Pi is starting the more intensive phase of his pre-operation meds today. We switch eye drops and they're administered four times a day instead of two, and in addition he gets an off-brand Rimadyl twice a day. I'm keeping him in my thoughts, I really hope it helps with all of the issues you've been having with him lately. It's so sad to read how much it has affected him :( Also, it's always awesome when they are good about taking pills. Kaidan treats his Glucosamine and Rimadyl as if they are treats. Hell, every time I open any pill container even for my own vitamins now he runs over, sits and looks up at me like, "Okay my turn :downs:" I'm hoping hes good about taking his fish oil as well.

I taught mine "put it in my hand" so I don't have to bend over to pick it up.

I also trained him that if he puts it on the ground I say, "I can't reach it down there" and he picks it back up.

Right now I am enjoying training him not to eat the chicken that is cooling on the counter. It's driving him nuts!

I usually chalk it up to Huskies (and most primitive dogs, really) just not getting "play" quite like other dogs do. That is the only way he plays with that ball, and he'll never tug or do any of the other play things Eris likes to do. Whenever he's hyper and I try to get him to tug he just mouths it and makes his play-growl sounds of "nrghhh nrgghhh nrgghhhhhh". I'll admit it's damned adorable.

Just rescued this foxy lady from a family in New Mexico.

She has been immediately renamed "Mona" from the previous monicker of "Firefox" and just turned 2 years old on the 26th on February.

The 12 hour drive back to Austin went mostly well. She had some severe anxiety for the first hour or so and was drooling all over the place, then threw up, but she seems to be coming around just fine now that we aren't on the road.

She still hasn't pooped yet but I'm still chalking that up to being in a new place.

Ooh, yay! :neckbeard: Congrats to you! I'm actually interested, did Bryan tell you about her? :3: We've been in a bit of a lull lately with intakes (some of them are getting snatched up from the shelters to be shipped off to other breed rescues out of state...:psyduck:?)

Also, that drooling and throwing up sounds like car sickness to me. Our foster Mushi, now named Sushi (and we get to watch him for his family again next week! So excited) gets REALLY car sick with the drooling and throwing up and is lethargic for the next 30 minutes to an hour after the ride, even if it was a short one. I've heard ginger snaps help a little from a friend in California, but I've never tried as Koji doesn't get car sick, he just gets hyperventilated.

I expect many more pictures of Mona as she gets used to your place. Also, you should go to meetup.com and look for our Hill Country group! I think there's a Pups for Pints meetup in April I have to see if I can make the drive for.

I found her from searching various rescue groups in the Texas area and she came up even though she was in New Mexico. The group (CARMA) coordinated with you guys and Bryan came over to do my home inspection.

As you can see, everything went through great and now she is living in a better state (with GRASS instead of DIRT) :haw:.

I'll have to check out the ginger snap thing if it happens again. After the first hour or so she came around and her tail curled back up and everything.

Once she gets acclimated and establishes a routine, I'll be checking out the meetup groups. She supposedly has a history of dog aggression but it's possible that it was because her previous owners didn't have her spayed and fed all their dogs from the same trough and at the same time. Now that she is fixed and the only dog of the house, some slow socialization could help bring her around to a point where I can take her to doggie playdates.

They said she was too aggressive toward their other animals (which include cats, multiple dogs, an emu, and a loving CAMEL).

Like I mentioned earlier, I think a lot of her aggression is triggered by her previous owners setting her up for failure. When we've gone out on walks and another dog approaches, she seems genuinely interested until they get all up in her grill.

I'm having a consultation with a behaviorist after next week (SXSW is going to make the entire city shut down) to see what her triggers might be and what I can do to help her get over it.
