Hogburto posted:If the patches generally get smaller for less-significant changes, it would save on redundant downloading that would otherwise be required to keep up with the project as updates occur. World of Warcraft's updater does it that way. Sounds like that game needs an automatic-updater. It's really simple to have the program download the same update torrent every time and check to see if you have all of the listed files already and just do your updating on the server end by adding files to that single torrent and keeping everything seeded. It DOES have an automatic updater. You open the updater, and it downloads and installs the game and says "restart updater to continue". You restart it, and it downloads and installs the first patch. Restart to continue, and it downloads and installs the second patch. Restart to continue, and it downloads and installs the third -- and so on ad infinitum. It cannot download them all simultaneously or sequentially, it cannot automatically restart and continue the updates every time, and it never tells you how many patches are required to reach the current version. When downloading the game from zero, there is no option to download an up-to-date build -- only to download 0.40 and follow the horrible patching process. It is The Worst Updater In The World. [e] a close second is the system for the Il-2 mod "HSFX", which requires that you download and concatenate eight 512.00 MB files because the modders are apparently stuck using FAT12 file systems or something. And then you have to follow a similar 1.0 -> 1.01 -> 1.02 -> 1.02fix patching process. orange lime fucked around with this message at 10:09 on Feb 24, 2011 |

I'm still playing the first level for the first time. I found the Unataco guy who wants to sell me a scope for the crossbow for 700 credits, but I only have 500 (plus, those tranq darts for $60 sound nice. Is it possible to get more credits? Can I sell that pack of cigarettes and chocolate bar? Is the Fire extinguisher past the electrical barrier useful for anything? Does the Unatco computer inside the crate in the mini-Unatco base do anything, even if I knew the login? When trying to defuse mines, which is better - rushing up or crouch-walking up? Do gas grenades kill enemies or will they recover if I wait for the gas to dissipate? On the east side, I spotted two guys just standing there facing each other. I thought they would start a conversation if I got close enough, but I got as close as I dared and nothing.

I always rush them / Gasgrenades don't kill anybody, they just incapacitate them long enough for you to run past, shoot them, or if you have a hazmat suit, go in and everybody. 4. Are they right next to the wall in the grass area? Yeah, there should be a conversation there. Try to sneak up right behind them and chill behind that corner, their conversation is pretty cool. You can't sell cigarettes or candybars, or pretty much anything really. Maybe Zyme at one point? And I think fire extinguishers are pretty useless, you can spray people in the face for a laugh though.

Also you can actually use one to put yourself out if some jerk with a flamethrower gets the drop on you.

Besides your weapon of choice, the only things REALLY worth carrying around are medkits, biocells, multitools and lockpicks. Always keep a single-slot melee weapon around (pref. the baton) for busting open crates and such, unless you keep the DTS (KEEP IT). The rest of the items are best used when found, or left behind. If you have spare space, I'd recommend keeping EMP/Scramble/gas 'nades there, they are always useful. You do not NEED any item in the game except the nanokey, so just take the stuff you really want. Somebody finished the game without augs, skills or items.

Early in the game is acceptable to keep an extinguisher in your inventory for just that reason. Later, you can use the regeneration aug to keep yourself alive as the fire goes out (Wouldn't that mean your skin would keep on burning? Painful). I could see this being done after having played it many times since a lot of the codes and logons have been memorized. I can't imagine the difficulty of playing the game without augs, skills, items in a first playthrough though. Although I'm pretty sure it's possible. If you look long enough or you are clever enough, logons can be found or guessed for most computers in the game... but that would be reeeealy difficult.
