Now I feel like he needs just a little bit more to finish him off. I'm torn between a tattoo on the side of his face, or maybe blackened areas under his eyes or something. Just to make him a little more sinister than your normal old warrior.

Good choice man, the flesh of the face contrasts with the darkness of the armour and provides a nice bright focal point to the model. I think the darker eyes would do well, get a really really really tiny amount of unthinned Leviathan Purple and re shade under his eyes a couple of times. You've already shaded with it once so it should tie in perfectly.

I use Codex Grey and Stonewall Grey, mainly because Vallejo tends to be the slowest drying once it's on the palette.

Painted up Mephiston, and I'd say he looks good for what he is! I put this guy through 3 baths of Simple Green, plus some time cleaning him off with a knife, and I still couldn't clean him up. I have absolutely no idea what the hell was under all that paint. As a result some parts (the winged shoulderpad in particular) have lost some detail and I had to improvise:

Probably could use a little tidying up, but I think he came out well.

And no blending. Just one thinned color on top of the other.

Most of my painting is boiled down to the simplest possible level. One color on top of another, little to no blending, etc. Application and paint consistency is ultimately more important that doing a million layers to blend something.

Sure, if you're doing a show piece you're still going to blend like a mad man, but for table top or whatever I consider table top, you really don't have to spend that much time on each individual part. Application is the key. :ssh:

SRM, Mephiston's looking good. I'm assuming the chunkiness is result of the layers of poo poo stuck on him, so you did an admirable job working with what you had. A few things jump out at me:

- You could probably do to darken the low points on the collar skulls a little more, and then apply sparing highlights in pure white. That'll help those stand out a little more. Maybe some concentrated Devlan Mud in the recesses and eye sockets.

- The lightning on the sword's looking good, but you need to make that last jump up to white on bits of the lightning to really make it pop. Check out some of GW's studio Night Lords to get an idea of how they did it.

-You could also maybe go back over the wings and separate the individual feathers with a little black lining. Painting the idea of three dimensions rather than it actually being there.

- Highlight the gold with one final layer of silver. It sounds strange, but putting silver on the highest points of a gold area make it look like its gleaming.

Good job and a hell of a salvage, I really like the eyes especially. Thumbs up, bro.

Thanks a lot bro; that's the kind of stuff I need to hear! Next time I'm at my FLGS I'll get some Mithril for the edge highlights. Blacklining the wings is something I hadn't thought of either; it'll make things really pop. The sword was pretty much a test run for if I ever painted the Space Hulk Terminators, and I was contemplating jumping up to white. Thanks a bunch!

Yup. You'd be surprised the results you can get with simple processes like that. It never seems like much in bits and pieces, but you really get a nice effect once you highlight an entire model.

E: Thought I'd post some shots of wolf pelts while I was at it. Here's the pelts from the Wolf Guard Battle Leader and the Long Fang Pack Leader.

Proper lighting and background contrast goes a long way towards making a model cast natural looking shadows that make a simple paint job look tons better than it would in direct light with macro up close. I wish I could figure out the sweet spot for photographing, but you gotta get lucky sometimes.

I'm definitely going to keep working on my Catachan Air Cav because I feel the same way. There's something about an army of Rambos that's just too bad rear end to put into words. The only problem is that all of those models are in storage in El Paso while I'm sitting in Afghanistan. So, I decided to finish up the army I already had half-painted. I've got about 9 Infantry, and a rhino to paint and a razorback to order to finish up about 1750 points of Space Wolves.

After that I think I'm going to alternate between Dark Eldar and Catachan units, but for my last 5 months or so in country I'll probably be working on DE as I've got a box of Wyches to assemble and a Raider waiting to be painted and I'll probably just add on from there.

Though I might just order a Command Squad or Harker for the hell of it. . .

Thanks a ton. I found a similar reference on a really old Brushthralls.com Paint-Your-Box post.

Side note:

I am finally trying to figure out this wash business. I have always added my Future/Water mixture right into my paint jars to make them flow better, but this idea of:
1. Base Shade
2. Wash that is darker
3. Base Shade wash to highlight
really makes sense to me.

one of my current projects:

crosspost from warmachine thread. That is after the Quickshade. I need to work on getting the washes a little thinner. I was putting washes on the top of his wings to make them less dark, and one of the washes left a discernable outline.

I use a mix of 1 part Future, 3 parts water as my thinning/mixing medium. Is that ok, or is there something better. I also read about a product called Tamiya Smoke for adding the look of carbon buildup on metal. Does that stuff work well? Even though I am playing Legion, Khador is still calling to me.

I'm following a painting guide on BoLS to paint my Empire red, white, and black (since I'm colorblind). I'll post some pics of them in various stages later because I definitely need some critiques. However, my question right now is what should I do for skin? I currently have no flesh color paint (going to pick so up later). Am I alright with Dwarf Flesh and then just mixing in some bleached bone for highlights. I don't want to get to complicated. The red, black, and white parts are already complicated enough :downs:

I recently started 40k again after a 15-year layoff (I was in middle school last time I played and couldn't really afford it). I am going Chaos this time around, so I picked up Assault on Black Reach and the Chaos Army Battleforce, and then used some bits and a matching paint scheme to convert the normal space marines to Chaos.

My painting is probably the worst of anyone who posts here, but I got a pretty cool effect so I figured I would share it. I started with black primer and then based everything in silver, and then drybrushed with a light green to make it look like the force had been under the ocean for a few centuries. I am considering adding chains or spikes to make the dreadnought more converted, but I hate to over do it.

Edit: That is blurry as hell. I will make a better picture!

I paint charadon granite, wash with badad black, drybush charadon again, then highlight khaki. It's admittedly sort of green looking on close inspection, but everyone seems to think it's black leather.
