The 39 Steps has a UK edition, but it seems to be quite mediocre. You can count on Criterion eventually putting out The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, and Foreign Correspondent. Warner is supposed to release Dial M for Murder in 3-D by the end of the year. Rear Window is going to be a tough one to bring to HD. It's a grainy film due to the early Eastmancolor stock and Universal's usual mastering will not be kind.

Even though it's DVD only, the Fox and Universal box sets are must-haves. Fox is especially great for having the first R1 editions of The Lodger, Sabotage, and Young & Innocent in fully restored versions. Their remasters of Rebecca, Notorious, and Spellbound are even better than Criterion's editions.

Have you guys started purchasing movies in Blu-ray format whenever possible, or do you still buy DVD's of movies that are availible in Bluray? I'm asking because the past year or so, I've started to expand my movie collection pretty drastically, but I've recently decided that any movie made 2010 and onwards I'll buy in Bluray. I don't even have a Bluray player, but I figure it's the way the future is, and I may as well start investing in it. They are so drat expensive though, for the price of three-four Bluray titles I could probably get 7-8 DVD's. I guess it also has to do with that a lot of the Bluray titles are fairly new releases, while my DVD selections are movies from 2004 and the 80s and poo poo.

I still do DVD's because I don't have a BR player and I just started amassing a decent collection and also, I watched Inception on Blu-ray and I didn't like how it looked. I thought I would adjust but I never did, and was basically just wanting to watch it in the theater again. The movement seems strange, almost like it's too smooth or too quick or something. And the lighting is also strange, and it gives this real "they are on a movie set" feeling that permeated every indoor scene.

Personally, I have and would not purchase another dvd unless it was the only format available for a film. Im just in love with blu ray, I don't need to toot its horn here, but I'd have to say that once you switch over you will never go back. I'd say if you plan on switching, buy the blu ray since it is the format you truly want, and won't need to purchase a 2nd copy to replace the dvd you never should have bought. I buy my blu rays from amazon and usually dont pay anymore than 12 or 15 dollars at most. A lot of people sell used blu rays on there with the condition listed. I just stick with the ones listed as in "like new" condition. You can find many for under 9 dollars sold directly from Amazon, as well.

If you are having a problem with the motion/smoothness of playback than you may want to look for and turn off the motion interpolation setting on your TV. With this turned off there should be nothing about a Blu Ray that causes it to run smoother or quicker than a DVD, and many people who complain about the above problem are able to solve it this way. Look here for what the commercial name of frame interpolation might be called on your set: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_interpolation#HDTV

John Williams has done an incredible amount of original soundtracks, many of them instantly recognizable and classic. But, what is generally considered his worst one?

Harry Potter is a pretty mixed bag. The main theme and Fawkes' theme are awesome, but a lot of it just sounds like he rehashed the score from Home Alone.

In True Romance Christian Slater is guided by Elvis Val Kilmer and we never really see his face. Is this a reference to something else? Because the comic book "Preacher" came out that same year and it also uses this trope where the main character is guided by John Wayne, but Wayne's face is never shown. Not so much the "Spiritual Advisor" side of things, but because both films explicitly never show the face of the person.

There are a ton of movies that I always liked but would never pay full price for, and now they're on DVD for three or four dollars. I wouldn't pay $20-30 for a blu-ray of What About Bob?, but I would sure as hell pay $2.99 for it on DVD. And when it comes out on blu-ray for $2.99, I'll upgrade.

I only ever buy anything on DVD anymore if there's absolutely no chance of it coming out on BluRay. For example, the TV show Archer's first season was only available on DVD.

Can anybody recommend books or even videos online that I could watch to understand better the language of film? I'm not interested in making movies, I just want to be able to better understand the thought process behind shots. I do my own armchair analysis but I'd like to speed up my education instead of simply absorbing more movies and winging it.
