next rinse with 90% rubbing alcohol
finally let dry with a fan for a day or 2

Would it be fair to say that EliteKeyboards crawled out of its den, saw the masses waiting for a non-Topre board and scampered back inside leading to 6 more weeks of something keyboard/spring related?

My friend who were waiting to get there Cherry boards went with Armygroup in Taiwan for their Filcos. The price was decent and they received their keyboards in about one week.

I can only hope the rumors of Filco making a deal for a different US distributor is true.

I will probably get to go to Japan in April and realized that there are shops in Akihabara selling Topre and Filco keyboards :woop: Looking forward to giving them a spin (a tap?) in the shop if the shop keepers let me...

(And I just ordered a Cherry G80 3000 with blue switches around a week ago too...)

I am using a Cherry Cymotion Expert at the moment, which I understand is a rubber dome keyboard with quite special key pressing characteristics, though there is not that much information about that model out there. Maybe I will write up a little review as soon as I get a nice something to compare it with. Would anybody already know how the Cherry Cymotion Expert experience compares to Cherry blue, brown or Topre switches?

So what are my options for sub-$100 tenkeyless/compact keyboards? the Happy Hacker Lite looks ok, but I think I'll get sick of the function key thing (which I probably won't use that often, but it definitely bothers me when I have to hit all sorts of buttons to hit f10 on my mac keyboard)

I have the blank key grey version of the HHKB pro 2. I love it. There is nothing more awesome than this keyboard for what I use it for which is coding in vim.

The blank keys are great because it means I had to learn to touch type completely. I thought I was a good touch typist but it turns out I would sneak a peak now and then for the keys I didn't use frequently, like a lot of the less used punctuation.

The sound the keys make and the feel of them is a lot different than "cherry blues" which feel more flimsy to me than the topre now (the only other mechanical I have for comparison).

The layout is actually very useful. The control key is a in a good spot and you can switch the function key to the left with a dip switch setting. This allows you to press it with a left pinky and use the arrows and other second layer keys (home/end/etc.) with the right. I find this very convenient an not at all confusing or difficult to get used to. The only thing I miss on this keyboard is a numberpad. I don't need one very often but they are ideal for number entry.

It took me a week or two to get proficient using the blank keys. The biggest problem I had was finding a diagram of the keys, both layers. They didn't include one in the box. But a little google search and I was good to go.

Switching between keyboards isn't at all a problem other than the twang of sorrow you feel when you don't get to use your HHKB pro 2.

drat, that's kinda what I thought. Noxious's post kinda convinced me that I could probably like using the HHKB Lite since I do a lot of coding in vim and don't necessarily need easy access to function keys. 77 on amazon isn't that bad, I guess

I've kind of been wondering about this as well.

I saw this Cherry Keyboard on Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823333036). Does anyone know if this is the same manufacture as the switches?

According to the company's catalog (http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/keyboards/pdf/CHE_212613_ShortFormCat_r9.pdf), this particular model has mechanical switches as well, though it doesn't identify them.

My current plan is to hold out until the Leopold boards become available on EliteKeyboards, but at $80 a mechanical board without the number pad is intriguing.

I'm fairly certain that cherry is "the" cherry, but that keyboard does not have the set of mechanical switches you are looking for.

Yup, it's just odd enough for me to have an issue with it. And I actually used a Solaris computer lab in Highschool, it's mainly because the 8-5 job requires that I use Windows w/ all the accutraments. I still have the packaging and everything. I'd absolutely love it if it just had the CTRL in the Windows configuration, but it's enough of a dealbreaker for me to go back to the Dell Quietkey.

The Arc is a great Tenkeyless board for the money ($36 shipped from amazon). Sure, it doesn't have mechanical switches, but I think it's an absolute joy to type on. Would be worth looking for one at a Bestbuy or something to try out.

I really really want one with blues (I think, never really knew which kinds I've used before), but given that they are supposed to be the loud keys, my girlfriend will probably leave me after a week of using it at night.

I'm afraid we have no time for codes and manners.
Having used both, blues have a much more satisfying tactility than the browns. I'd say blues should be the default choice unless you really need them quieter, then go browns. Even so, I've used my keyboard without waking my gf in the next room, but she's a moderately heavy sleeper.

I've also used both and I fully agree with this. The browns aren't that much quieter anyway, unless you train yourself not to bottom out the keys, or do some mod with o-rings.

If your computer is in your bedroom and someone else sleeps with you, buying something with blues will most likely result in them waking up, sneaking behind you, and strangling you with piano wire.

Blues are loud, and I can understand some people finding them annoying.

My wife happens to enjoy my loud keyboards the majority of the time. She has stated on several occasions that the normal typing/programming noise that my Cherry Blues or Unicomp Buckling Springs produces is soothing. This is from the same and different rooms at random times during the day.

The wife on the other hand does not enjoy the racket coming from my keyboards when I am doing speed typing tests.

I have been looking into getting a variable weighted Realforce in the future to help offset some hand pain. The noise from the Realforce appears far more discrete in the youtube videos, but the price of the boards is off putting.

I prefer the light feel of the browns over the click of the blues myself. Brown vs. Blue for noise, I'd say they both click at approximately the same volume, it's just that with the blues there are twice as many clicks.

The Leopold being released soon by EliteKeyboards is $99. My roommate just got a Noppoo Choco mini off eBay for $99, too. The Choco mini is super tiny. There's also the KBC Poker which is similar to teh Choco mini, but I think it looks nicer w/ less garish colors.

The cost to ship one to Australia is over half the cost of the keyboard. :( Maybe if I can find at least another Aussie who wants one too the cost starts becoming more respectable (though considering the BlackWidow is less than AU$100 possibly not - even if the macro keys on it are loving annoying).

Key caps, especially quality key caps, are almost impossible to find online. Your best option is to sign up for the geekhack forums and getting in on their group buys. The guys over there are flat out obsessed with their keyboards and dedicated a disproportionate amount of their time to vetting different asian key producers, so your best bet for price + quality is through them.

Unfortunately, a lot of the buys want you to get a full set of keys.
