My question was purely mechanical... is he influential? Do people with more financial resources copy his style? Is he an animator's animator? What defines "important" in that statement?

It could be because he's 25 years old, has made some incredibly popular animation, gotten his work played at Sundance, and his work seems to be generally well-received. I personally don't really "get" External World, though, so I can only conclude that I'm probably just too old. Like I said in the previous post, his work is technically well-made but I'm just wondering what the hell it's trying to say, and why it takes 17 minutes to say it. A friend of mine said "External World" was the modern equivalent of Don Hertzfeldt's "Rejected". I can agree with that only in terms of its popularity with online audiences. Anyways. Finished re-texturing this thing just now. 3d Coat is just awesome. The "sand" caked onto the model is actually a small amount of sugar on black paper. Click here for the full 1300x731 image.

That tank is looking good. The star looks raised up from the rest of the tanks surface. I thought the decals would just be painted on?

Well, thanks to this thread I watched "The External World" again and I'm starting to come around to where it's coming from. I think it's definitely an age gap thing that's making me not quite understand it. I think it's kinda referencing the gross-out humor of South Park, the graphics of the Playstation 1, anime, and the whole 4chan sense of humor. These are all things that weren't around and/or massively popular til I was an adult (except for the PS1) so I guess it's definitely a Gen Y thing. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. But ultimately when something is an in-joke based on something you grew up with it's going to be predispositioned to providing more laughs than something from another generation, I guess. Achtung! It's based on what he's doing, the fact that he's doing it alone*, his style, the notoriety he's received, his age, the fact that nobody is copying it with a bigger budget. Lots of reasons. Don't get too hung up on it if you don't agree. *Go find a handful of student shorts that you've really enjoyed from the past 6-8 years. I'd bet there's a good chance that none of them are producing their own work right now.

To call him the most important figure in animation today is a loving insult to people like Gilliam and Plympton and Hertzfeldt, and just about every other recent animator who actually made something that meant something. I don't think he's being random for randomness' sake. There's definitely things he's saying there, but they are presented in a collage. I'm not saying he's Picasso or anything, but it isn't just "lol! I'm edgy!"

Gilliam and Plympton were game changers decades ago. Hertzfeldt was a big deal 10 years ago. I think OReilly is a big deal right now. Both times I've commented on this, I've stated it as my opinion. I really like the guy's work a lot and I think he's extremely interesting. You seem to be getting really riled up about this, so I'm sorry for even saying anything in the first place. I understand that you don't really like his latest work, but go watch Please Say Something and Black Lake and tell me he's all about "Random" and stupid 4chan stuff.

I think it's definitely rooted in internet culture. I'm not entirely sure what I make of it either. It's really huge and complex so I think it will take a while to sink in really. I kind of felt like some parts were fantastic and very well thought-out and some bits seemed like as said earlier, the kid with the drum. Perhaps that was deliberate. I guess it takes on the persona of internet culture where everything is 'deprecated' and everything means ten other things. It was kind of nihilistic in how everything just falls apart and blood-splatters and is raw and debouch but I guess that's the internet. I would say it was immature and superficial but I guess that's the internet too. I'm still not sure what I think about it really, but I think it's very interesting.

Oh man, something my friend noticed that you might find interesting, is that in the first train scene, you hear laughing followed by the blood on the windows. At the end, when that laughing guy falls out of the "Applause" house, he hits that train, so that explains the laughing of the first scene. I never really noticed it until now, but that's really cool.

Feels like the number of contenders must really be swelling every year since there's so much top-notch software available nowadays.

Although that's kind of like saying "well there's so many pencils in the world now, artists must be having trouble with all the competition!", but the thing is that it's not about tools, I mean, you can pretty much replicate anything in mspaint even with enough time and effort, it's just that tools simplify or speed up the process. To contend though you still need an amazing style and creativity, not to mention actually having skill at what you do.

Hell, I remember what it was like to try and transfer something done in DeluxePaint Animation across to a VHS tape back then. Something as simple as that was a technical nightmare. It seems pretty laughable given what can be accomplished now. Gareth Edwards' Monsters is pretty much the poster-child for what's achievable nowadays: as long as you have a decent amount of talent, you can make a good-looking feature film using a relatively inexpensive camera and do all the visual effects yourself. Short filmmaking is a lot more accessible, but speaking as somebody who seems a lot of amateur short films I can safely say that what Twi1tchy is saying is true. While it's easier to add effects and get a film out there, it doesn't mean your film is anything but a steaming pile.

One of the things that I think has changed for the better is access. 15 years ago, if you didn't work in the industry or live in LA or NY, you'd never see or even hear of any of the nominated shorts outside of the awards broadcast. Whether it's on DVD, YouTube or some other video site or a torrent megapack, I can watch all of them easily.

Hey guys, I'm working with exported Revit scenes in max, and they all use promaterials. Since my bosses want to use those scenes for realtime applications too, I have to replace all of the materials with standard ones, which is a bitch to do. Multyconverter and other scripts haven't worked so far, though I do have a script that replaces everything with standard materials, but doesn't copy over the diffuse texture. Anyone got any experience dealing with stuff like this? I know it's scriptable, but since I lack the brainpower to learn that, I'm kind of at a dead end.

I'm guessing there are too many materials for you to use copy & paste without wasting a lot of time, right? I'd be tempted just to copy and paste things into slots if it's just the diffuse texture, but ultimately that's because MaxScript isn't my forte. Anyways. Spent a few hours on texturing this Mitsubishi Zero. It's another model I've made some minor modelling adjustments on, and I'm doing the texturing in 3d Coat. Linked for hugeness: The bump maps and reflections aren't set up properly yet -- I'm doing the same thing I did with the tank (i.e. setting diffuse to bump) until I've finished painting the diffuse layer. From there it should be pretty straightforward to make the adjustments in 3d Coat and export it as a separate map.

Yeah, the problem is that there are at most only 4-5 materials in a scene. But since revit's mesh/material handling is utter crap, it makes a copy of the same material for every object, and puts that in a different multi-sub object. If there was a way to change them all, I'd be happy to find out.
