Yeah, the appearance is enough.. I get why the law is there and everything, but it kind of sucks having to limit lunches/gifts/holidays/birthday presents etc to $20.. Of course, I've also noticed that one party would stiff it entirely and not worry.. This town, sometimes

Jesus. I just landed an interview for a GS-14 position. I am so, so screwed. Up against people WAY more qualified Totally didnt expect it. First federal job application. I have no idea what to expect. If the position requires a secret clearance, and I already have an active secret - will that give me any additional "bonus points" so to speak? Hooray for an inside gimme on the job posting / how closely it matches my experience, a short application period, and a name drop I guess

I spent a few minutes confused about where this thread went. It looks like we're now "Business, Finance, and Careers." At first my butt hurt, but then I realized it does work better; this thread mostly refers to career advice and is not particularly an ask/tell session about federal jobs, it seems, so it makes far more sense now. Is anybody else in for the IC Virtual Fair on March 8th? (More info here: http://icvirtualfair.com/) I'm mostly hoping to get some career advice out of this. I've never done a virtual fair but this will definitely be interesting! Advice would be awesome if some other goons did this last year.

Ok, this is going to sound kind of vague so bear with me. There was an A/T thread a while back where a goon worked in a national park for 6 months or so. He worked in a group that went around and did odd jobs and repairs in the park, trail refurbishes and whatnot, and they camped out in the park for the duration of their time there. They had a cook with them to make all their meals also. Does anyone have any clue what I'm talking about. I put in NPS as my search criteria on the USAjobs website but I scanned through all 400 or so jobs and didn't see anything similar to this. Maybe it was a volunteer position? But I think I remember he was payed, though I can't seem to locate the thread on these forums.

A lot of states out west have YCC programs that do similar stuff, but they're not through the Park Service. The Forest Service also has those kinds of jobs, so I would search them as well. If you don't have any experience, you cam volunteer with trails groups in your state or look for events going on with state parks.

I have a contingent offer from a DoD contractor (must be able to get security clearance) that I plan on accepting. I may ask some questions later when that process is going on, because I will probably freak out again. Thank you to the members of this thread for their contributions and support.

It honestly depends on the level of clearance they plan on putting you through. But the process itself is pretty straight forward, read each question twice (they are very specific) and answer them honestly.

Oh my freaking god. I called this morning to finally finalize my final EOD but since the whole recruitment office has JUST moved, the lady who answered the phone couldn't transfer my call to my recruiter. So now I have to wait for her to call me back...and judging by the luck I've had with THAT...FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF edit: looks like I won't find out anything until wednesday because all the necessary info is still in boxes. Has anyone been able to check their application status for IRS positions over the last week? I keep getting "We were unable to complete your request at this time." after USAJobs tries to forward to the IRS I doubt any progress has been made, but just wondering.

I enjoyed the giantess looming over the grounds and talking for forever in the beginning, too. It seems like they tried really hard to make this high tech and futuristic or whatever, but it's totally unnecessary. If you really want a thrill, there's a who's on or something button. You can see how many hundreds of other people are doing the sneak preview with you and where they come from. Seems like a lot of DIA people.

Unless any furlough lasts more than a couple weeks, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Most Feds are looking at it as a potential free vacation. Granted, there is no guarantee to get paid for any time off due to lack of budget, but given past occurrences most people aren't getting too worried. But this was supposed to be Shutdown Monday, so please give your condolences to all of us that had to report to work.

Ha ha, I just avoided the CIA and NSA booth, and the "public chat" is completely worthless. I did get some helpful info from the NGA booth, though It took recruiters about 15 minutes to respond to my messages. Kinda like the last job fair we went to, except without real people. Edit: I hit all the booths I meant to, the FBI Language Analyst and NGA, got some good information, filled out a few applications pretty quickly, and now I am waiting to see the live presentation coming up. All in all not bad, but yeah next year they need to add a queue. I feel so drat sorry for the employees that have to sift through these chat rooms. Edit 2: Just looked at my previous applications with the NGA on a whim, for the two earlier hiring events I got two different statuses "KC Final Screen" and "HD Preliminary Screen". I stayed for about an hour, mostly laughing at the people in the lounge who were clearly as frustrated as the rest of us. I didn't try to get a recruiter's attention, because it became obvious pretty quickly that I don't have anywhere near the kind of credentials everybody else does. Off to a Master's degree, I guess.

I not surprised it took the NGA recruiters a while to get to people. They literally JUST moved their entire office yesterday and everything seems to be a bit chaotic. I'm really surprised they're doing ANOTHER hiring event when they currently already have a huge backlog of people (like me!) awaiting placement.

I heard nothing but bad last year about the IC virtual fair. I didn't mention anything because I couldn't remember specifics, but you guys seem to have had a similar experience. I think the problem is that it's bad in an indescribably lovely way, by the sounds of it. A friend in search of a -13/14 equivalent did mention that she learned in private message (I think?) with an NSA rep that they were looking to fill 3-4 junior positions; not sure exactly how junior, but at NSA that could be pretty low-grade.

The rule is that if you have money, you spend it. If you have $5M for Project X and someone offers you the deal at $3M for a "bargain," you don't accept the bargain; you tell them that you have $5M for the project, and that's how much you want to buy it for. I don't know where all these NGA and DIA billets are coming from either though. DIA doesn't seem to be actually filling them, though maybe they're just waiting on the budget (which is now approaching mythical status).

I think he meant things like illegal mp3s, etc. Sometimes (well, usually) there are also policies against software installation for unapproved applications, which is most of them, but that can be forgiven, especially for something like what you're talking about, which seems to be some kind of super math nerd NASA crap for nerds or space or something. I mean, that's a .gov site. Conducting piracy on a government computer, though? lol. That's one thing for which it isn't hyperbole to say that you'd be hosed. Same for porn, etc. Which is why it's also common sense that you wouldn't do it... or so you'd think. Also, he meant that on the polygraph they ask whether you've downloaded illegal mp3s from a government computer and you should pay attention to semantics in that case, although I don't personally remember my poly so I can't vouch either way. I wasn't even asked actually, now that I do think of it.

Im so confused, Im applying for an entry level FDIC examiner position and I uploaded transcripts, a cover letter, and a resume on USA jobs, but in the job description it says I need to upload them to the FDIC as well and I don't know how to do that... Can't they just see it through usa jobs?

there is a button to submit it for the posting, on USA Jobs Otherwise, double check your posting and check there. Usually there is a number to fax or an e-mail address to send them in. If you fax, you will have to print out a specialized cover sheet.

Welp just got out of the BEX, didn't make it past the QEP portion. Prepared for it as best I could, but my experience just wasn't competitive enough. As much as rejection stings (happens for me too much during this job search) I am glad that I was able to go. It was my first run, so now I know what to expect next time, and I will return. Didn't know too much about the job before I was invited, did a lot of studying of the job and now I know that that is what I want to do. So for now I will just have to find a way to make myself more marketable and examine what few options I have left, see what would make me a better fit.

It'd give me a TS, a couple more years to perfect my Russian and more exposure to the culture, but I am not sure if that would be enough to get me to where I want to go. Plus, I hear that even if a clearance is granted, the job wouldn't be guaranteed. From what I hear about DoS clearances, they aren't finalized unless one starts the job that the clearance is for, so all my time dealing with them may count for nothing anyway.

I can see this entire application process being a rather considerable deterrent to interested applicants... It was not that obvious where to go to complete the application to the FDIC's desired standards.
