I really liked Monsters, with the creatures that seemed not to care about people, rather than hostile, like in typical monster movies. I also really enjoyed the shallow depth of field and dSLR look. Anything similar? Presence on Netflix instant is a plus.

In that case try Hard Candy which is a movie about two serial killers stuck in a house trying to kill each other. These two killers are also played by Juno and Niteowl. It seems to have a bad rep on the internet, but I actually liked The Brave One. It's sort of Taxi Driver meets Collateral, but not as good as either of those films. Frailty is also very good, even if you see the twist ending coming from a mile away. Bill Paxton is awesome. Also, Comedy Option: Boondock Saints

For my last request, someone introduced me to Timecrimes, which is the inspiration for my next request. This one's kind of weird. I really liked how that entire movie took place in a house, a lab, and the space in between those two locations. What are some other movies where geography plays a big role, preferably a small area? Also, a foolish pianist posted:I really liked Monsters, with the creatures that seemed not to care about people, rather than hostile, like in typical monster movies. I really liked that movie, but when I checked the CineD thread on it, it seemed to be universally despised .

So, I've been on a kick here recently for some good, hopefully more modern Noir movies. Ideally, I'm looking for something with a similar feel to the opening scene from Sin City, though I was also a big fan of LA Confidential and Blade Runner as well. Bonus points for anything that has a lot of really good atmospheric music.

You could consider it a companion piece to Timecrimes (or interpret it as a ripoff, which it isn't) but the plot of Triangle revolves around a few key locations on an otherwise empty ship. (And I think Triangle inspired deeper dissection of it's plot and timeline than Timecrimes, for what it's worth).

I'm pretty sure it went straight to DVD. And if you want sci-fi noir, you HAVE to watch Dark City (another one of my '90s favorites), but either get the Director's Cut or mute the volume from the beginning until it cuts to a scene with a bathtub. The opening narration gives away a major plot twist, but it was removed for the Director's Cut. Beyond that, The 13th Floor is another sci-fi noir hybrid, but not as good as Dark City. Recommend me awesome Chinese films! Preface: I love Chinese filmmaking and I am entranced by Chinese history and culture. I have always loved their martial arts movies and even non-martial arts movies, so every now and then I get OBSESSED with China. Like, I have to watch Chinese movies and I have no clue why. Solution: Netflix instant! Last night I went to netflix and added anything remotely Chinese to my queue, I started with Ip Man yesterday. The list (so far): Three Kingdoms Election Wild China (docu on China) The Warlords Red Cliff The Road Home Last Train Home The Emperor and the Assassin In the Mood For Love Bonus (not Chinese but Asian and foreign enough to the point where it's just interesting): Chocolate Ong Bak 2 (never seen) Ong Bak 3 Legend of the Tsunami Warrior The Bodyguard To be honest, right now I'm really in the mood for Chinese period pieces. I saw Ip Man yesterday and I really got a lot out of it and found it one of the more enjoyable Chinese kung fu movies I've seen in recent memory alongside Karate Kid (am I the only who thinks the remake steamrolls the poo poo out of the original?) Rarely do martial movies have both good action and good story, but both Ip Man and Karate Kid did. Usually movies like this don't have both, it's one or the other. In any case, I'd love some suggestions especially for modern wuxia. The suggestions don't even have to be martial arts in nature, though that's the kick I'm on right now. It could just as easily be comedy or drama or non-martial arts action. Jupiter Jazz fucked around with this message at 20:22 on Mar 28, 2011 |

Himuro posted:Recommend me awesome Chinese films! You might have already seen some of these but... Hero - I've heard complaints about the message of the film, but I think it tells its story well enough and looks utterly amazing thanks both to the martial arts (inc. Donnie Yen) and the cinematography. Shaolin Soccer - Wuxia in a comedy. Really one of my favourite films. It's just tons of fun to watch Dragon Tiger Gate - A fairly recent production (2007), full of stylish action sequences and Donnie Yen. Once Upon a Time in China - One of many films based on the life one of China's most famous folk heroes, Wong Fei Hong. Starring Jet Li. Fearless - Another Jet Li period piece (loosely) based on the life of a person Fist of Legend - Jet Li again. This one's set against the backdrop of the Japanese occupation in 1937. Raging Phoenix - Not Chinese but if you liked Chocolate... And not martial arts, but if you watch and like In the Mood for Love, you should try Chungking Express. Movies I like: Die Hard Godfather Seven Samurai Role Models The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Did you see what I did there? I put an obviously not-so-good movie in the middle of a bunch of classics. But that's OK because I started the list with a man trying to find a pair of shoes.

Fair warning: It is extremely slow moving and has virtually no plot; it's something you either buy into and just take in, or will find yourself hugely annoyed by. If you just give in and go along for the ride you'll find one of the most gorgeous and hypnotic movies of all time.

Edit: I'd really like to find some more action/thriller movies that have decent plot twists, decent actors and aren't super boring to watch. I know that's a broad order, so movies that I feel fall into this category that I loved, and would like to see more of, are Heist (Gene Hackman, Delroy Lindo), BASIC (John Travolta, Sam Jackson), Lucky Number Slevin (Josh Hartnet, Bruce Willis) and Identity (John Cusack, Ray Liotta). I know that's a broad, wierd spectrum that a lot of movies are going to fall up under, but hopefully you get the idea - movies that have you guessing about all sorts of crap most of the way through, right up to the "HOLY poo poo, REALLY?!" moment at or near the end. Audition Jacob's Ladder Angel Heart Enter the Void (well, kind of. You'll certainly be guessing all the way through and lots of Holy poo poo, Really? moments) Synecdoche, New York. Seconding Usual Suspects, The Prestige (still my favorite Christopher Nolan movie), Jacob's Ladder, and Angel Heart. I love them all. Also try L.A. Confidential (one of my all-time favorites), Dark City (only watch the Director's Cut), Memento, The Sting (a classic!), Lost Highway, Brick, The Machinist, Inland Empire, and even though it's not nearly as good as the others listed, the recent Unknown. Also watch the entire series Twin Peaks, which is only two seasons. Season 1 and the first third of Season 2 are outstanding, then Season 2 gets mediocre with moments of excruciating badness, but the series finale is one of the all-time great mindfucks. I have actually seen Memento and The Prestige which were both excellent. I even really liked The Illusionist (Ed Norton), even though a bunch of my dumb friends who've never watched it make fun of it for being a rip-off of The Prestige. I keep telling them to watch it, because the two are not similar in any way, save for the fact that they both revolve around illusionists. But I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the stuff in these lists. My brother keeps telling me over and over that I need to watch The Usual Suspects, but somehow I've never gotten around to watching it. Top of the list, starting tonight Edit: Are you talking about Unknown with the group of amnesiacs in the warehouse, or the new Liam Neeson one? Speaking of ocean horror movies - does anyone know the name of the movie (It may have been a TV movie, it was so long ago I can't remember) where in one scene we see a diver being lifted into the underwater base/submarine, and he is grabbed by a tentacle of a massive squid? I think it was filmed in the 90's, I saw it on TV once. I think it may have been a remake of 20,000 leagues...? I just loved the huge tentacle, then I think the base goes into evacuation mode and a huge waterlock door comes down on some chicks waist... Any ideas?
