I want to give UYD a shot but I just do not have the time to listen to 263 episodes of an hour long podcast. Are there any specific episodes that people here recommend or will listening to a few of the most recent ones work?

Just start with the latest one. It's not like there's some sort of continuity you have to follow.

I disagree, not on the continuity part, but there was a sort of "golden age" of UYD when it was really, really good. I think it's been mentioned here but as I recall it's in the 90-130 area. Craig's House, This Week in Florida, Jah's Poetry, etc.

Speaking of which, they mention their bits being stolen by Howard Stern and Penn and Teller, I assumed they were joking at first but once they mentioned it again I wasn't sure. Do they keep doing these bits or do they change it up?

Specifically I'm not sure exactly which bits they mention, or you mean, and I don't listen to Stern, but I think they organically landed on some things that a lot of people make sport of. I mean, GBS has their Craig's List threads, tons of people make fun of Florida because of the crazy poo poo that goes on there. "The Grapes of Rad" podcast actually takes it a bit further and declares Australia "The World's Florida".

I think for them to say they were "ripped-off" would require some really specific evidence. From listening to a lot of podcasts you come to realize that a lot of them are reporting the same "weird news" stories that you see online. Everybody and their Mom had a segment about how the Segue Co. owner drove his Segue off of a cliff and died. It's all about how you spin it, and UYD has a certain sensibility to make it hilarious.

Now, if Stern talked about meeting the oldest American, driving a blue Sundance, or climbing into bed with his parents while on LSD I'd be willing to say that it's a rip-off. Plus, Jah is a spoiled whiny baby. There, I said it.

Holy poo poo I just finished episode 89, and Seth and Jah get into a huge fight. It's like a 10 minute argument over adopting kids vs having a 'host womb' and Jah gets really pissed off. At one point he says something like "Seth if you seriously loving feel that way, I'm shutting this loving thing off and never doing another podcast."

Hearing best friends get into a fight like that is goddamn painful.

That's probably the only episode I won't ever listen to again. It really was like hearing your parents fight :(

And then the whole carbon monoxide leak thing gets out and it just turns into the biggest :psyduck: ever. Seth dying after the biggest UYD row ever would have been beyond depressing.

There isn't a sadface big enough for the last few minutes of that ep:

Jah: Oh, hey, I have a hiphop song, is there enough time?
Seth: Eh, I think we should probably end it....
J: I- what? Really, are you sure?
S: Yeah, I mean...not really feeling it (or something similar)

It's probably the only time I've ever heard Seth lose his enthusiasm, and he's basically 80% of the momentum of the show (since he prepares almost all of the news, songs, and games that both of them use.)

At least the song lyrics were lovely enough to cheer them both up a little at the very end.

I've been going through UYD and I'm up to episode 8, and while it's not outrageously funny I can see how it might be, and so after each one ends I'm inclined to go to the next one, even if I didn't really laugh that much. They do have a good setup and back-and-forth game going on.

I think there's another "golden age" within UYD, namely: To Catch a Predator recaps. Seth and Jah losing their poo poo at the different things the guys on TCaP used to do is some of the show's finest moments.

but UYD is still growing on me, esp. what I assume to be southern california colloquialisms that don't reach it over here to the NH ("bone down," "a grip of...") even those make it funny.

The Kathleen Madigan episode has been my favorite since Dave Foley. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did because I didn't really like her special, but her road stories with Lewis Black are hilarious and the interview very quickly turns into just a fun conversation between her and Marc.

Also, Marc is totally right and I would watch the hell out of a TV show of her and Lewis touring the country and encouraging people to drinking and gamble.

I had to pause that episode because I could not stop laughing at her discussion of golfing with Lewis Black and Ron White.

I use "bone down" almost exclusively now when referring to sex because of UYD. I actually listen to the episodes in reverse order, since when I started listening i started with the latest (somewhere round 223 at the time). The celeb stuff gets weirder every time for me because each episode tends to mention something that makes me go "wow, that was a huge story a year or two ago and I did not remember that at all".

Also, I wish I could live Seth's luddite lifestyle. I hate my cell phone.
