So no, it's unrelated. His first name is Aldo, that doesn't make him Aldo Lestrade either. It was just a semi-Italian name that I felt was Steiner-appropriate. Then again, I could've called him Winston Kashiwagi if I'd wanted; the only name that would've been out of place is 'Kurita'.

MegaMek has possibly the best name generator.

You end up with such names as "Holger van de Loo" and "Bertrand Melczewsky"(the best hovercar pilot)

Ok I've thought it over and barring any loud objections I'm leaning now towards accepting the duel but using Mukaikubo's idea of running to hex 1421 and opening fire on the Battle Cobra. I know there's the risk involved of falling on the pavement but if I do what I was originally planning it pretty much takes my PPCs out of the fight because the Cobra would be able to close within minimum range.

I don't think I'm going to alpha-strike it though.

Minimum range isn't so bad with PPCs unless you're literally right next to the guy. And if you're right next to him you've got 8 other weapons that don't have minimum range which you can fire now that you don't have to worry about all the heat the PPCs are creating.

If they are inside your minimum range, they are in short range for your four MLs and your SRM-6. Start with an AC/10 blast and then try to find the hole it makes.

I'd be willing to do this; I've actually got a copy of the book I can get pretty quickly, I think. I do have a bit of experience doing readings of other bad books for SA's amusement. That sort of thing would tend to get to be a fairly hefty chunk of text if I were to approach it the way I did, say, Jedi Academy trilogy, though I can and would change to something else that if it would work better here; I wouldn't want to make walls of text if it would offend much of this thread.

I know Mukaikubo has already volunteered, as well, but I figured I'd offer. :shobon:

Yeah, but this is (a) non-canon, and (b) we know for a fact that ComStar is prone to (a) errors, (b) creative editing, and (c) inserting outright fabrications into all of their publications, quite probably even the internally-circulated ones, lest a heretic get too good of an idea of what's going on.

You're trying to buy an obscure licensed book from 1993 that has almost certainly been out of print for the majority of the intervening years at a major chain bookstore's physical location? That's....not going to work. Ever.

Amazon's got 48 used listings, though, at least one of which even has Amazon fulfillment and is thus eligible for Prime.

I did enjoy how Focht's first assumptions about the Clans were not "Kerensky's coming back!" but instead "Hey, you know those single-celled organisms that consume things and take on their shape? Victor Davion was born with the amazing ability to show and not tell. It's the most incredible ability of all. They say again and again he's this great general and give him in-game abilities to reflect this, but the one time he had to do all the planning on his own without his father, Focht, Ardan Sortek or Morgan Kell to hold his hand, he loses half the Com Guard and basically their entire WarShip fleet at once.

As a general rule, the more page time you get in a novel, the more they talk you up in sourcebooks and the more pathetic you are when you actually see them act first-hand.

That would be "tell and not show," not "show and not tell." Someone who shows without telling is someone who doesn't toot his horn (or have it tooted for him) but can be a badass. Someone who tells without showing is a jackass with an Informed Ability, possibly one who does the informing himself.
