Once it's rooted you can do whatever you want. It's really easy to do, just back everything up that you want to keep. Okay - I'm running into some issues here with planning everything out. I'm looking for the RUU, and I think I ran across it: http://geekfor.me/hero/ruu-hero/sprint_ruu_156/ - is this what you're referring to? I'm also looking at just yanking it all through CWM/ROM Manager (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Hero_%28CDMA%29:_Full_Update_Guide) once rooted. I like the idea of what amounts to cloud-based ROM management. Now if only the Epic wasn't outed as a total piece early on I might have some CM7 goodness going on. Unfortunately they're just getting things rolling with a thimbleful of developers.

The Entire Universe posted:Also "If you have the money for an Epic, buy the Evo Shift or the Evo if you must have a phone right this very second." So for folks who want a 4.0" AMOLED with a nice GPU and audio DAC, and specifically a hardware keyboard, and Epic isn't an utter terrible option at this point. Probably used (since folks still think they suck and are dumping them for Evos). Admittedly eventual Gingerbread support is a crapshoot. Of course, if you don't care or don't want the hardware keyboard, wait for the Nexus S 4G.

ExcessBLarg! posted:So with the latest Epic Froyo update (EC05, the one they haven't pulled yet), the phone is basically more or less what it should've been at launch. GPS works, Camera works, Bluetooth reportedly works, etc. Gingerbread is reliably in the pipes for the European SGS phones, but yeah, a crapshoot for the North American SGS Diaspora. Additionally, I've never gotten a lock with GPS on my phone. I wish that was enough to bring it back to Sprint, even after this long, but I've had it since very shortly after release. Having that Super AMOLED is like having a Ferrari that punches you in the balls every time you get behind the wheel. Sure, it's pretty, and shiny, and the rest of the hardware looks nice on paper, but every drat time you try and use it you're reminded of how much of a fuckup it was to buy the drat thing. My Touch Pro 2 has this weird rainbow effect on the middle of the screen that you can only see when the screen is off. Would this be covered by TEP or would I have to pay $100 to get the screen replaced/fixed?

Stevie Lee posted:You would recommend the Blackberry Style over the Arrive? Why? Well, it actually was just the order that I thought of them in. But for hardcore Blackberry users and first time smartphone users sometimes the Style is a good choice. Maybe I'll switch the order if that reads weird, but the Style is not an awful choice by any means for a low end user.

Virgin Mobile uses the same network as Sprint and has dirt cheap pay as you go plans. You have a very limited selection of phones though. I'm currently paying 25/month for unlimited data/text and 250 voice minutes.

I currently have an HTC Diamond. There's really long delay between someone calls me and when my phone starts ringing, and also a really long delay between when I call someone and when their phone starts ringing. In both (incoming/outgoing cases) it rings a ton of time before the other phone actually rings. I have 3-4 bars when this happens, but it happens with similar delays at 1-2 bars. Is this related to my provider, or is it my phone being terrible? It might be worth noting that my calls never drop and are fine once I manage to get in one. I also plan on getting a new phone (android) some time in the next few months, which is why I am asking this. If it is related to my signal/carrier I will be switching despite my wallet's objections, but if it is because of my phone I will be ecstatic because it's in bad shape as is. I never used to have this problem with verizon and a dumb phone. Maybe I can force roaming and see if it happens.

I am on a SERO plan still because I guess I am a rad dude or something, and I am wondering how big a deal having a 4g phone is over a normal smartphone. My options right now are to go for the LG Optimus S and pay $0 and get a $40 a month SERO plan, or to pay $150 for an HTC Evo Shift and get a $50 a month SERO plan. Can anyone explain what I am really getting for $150 up front and $10 a month with the HTC Evo Shift? Also it's important to note that I really don't care for the little slide out keyboard, and would instead prefer a phone form factor more like the normal HTC Evo and LG Optimus S. I have never had a smart phone before, if that matters. I would be upgrading from a 2 1/2 year old clamshell style dumb phone.

4G isn't really a big deal unless you plan on streaming HD videos all day or using your phone as a mobile hotspot.

Since you've never had a smartphone, get the Optimus. It's pretty much the best you can do for baby's first smartphone. The EVO is awesome (I guess the shift probably is too) but since you don't have anything to compare to, you shouldn't have any problems with the Optimus except maybe some typing difficulty with the smallish screen.

We sold that phone in Canada, and it along with it's cousins were all horribly defective pieces of poo poo.

My bill is right about $87 before tax. What's the cheapest way to get it above $90 so I can get in premier gold and get the 12 month upgrades? I already have phone insurance.

As I understand it, insurance, the $10 smartphone fee, etc don't count towards premier gold status (and discounts don't count against you either). Your base plan has to be above the $89.99/mo mark for you to be gold. As an individual this means the $99.99/mo Simply Everything plan or the 900 min/mo Everything Data plan at $89.99.

You're correct now that I did a little Googling. http://premier.sprint.com/premierupdate/index.php Which means that you have to be on the "Simply Everything" plan for $99.99, or on the "Everything Data 900" plan for 89.99. Let me make one thing clear.....the $99 Simply Everything plan is not eligible for any employer discounts, the $89 900 Minute Everything Data plan is though. So there is one clear way to go in this situation.

Here's the thing, why not just put aside the $20 a month you would be paying, and then use that with a one year upgrade to get mostly the same price. At least you get interest.

Ok, someone suggest a plan for this. My ol lady and my 2 kids all need phones with a small bucket. 500 would be more than plenty with mobile to mobile and text interweb would be a plus. What would be the best plan for this? Looking at the plans it would be cheaper to use virgin but, I'd rather not go that way. and dumb text type phone for the kids and a random pos smart phone for her. She has a800w and it looks like it just came out of the box. She's also never had data on it.

This is where Sprint sometimes falls short fyi, where one person wants a smartphone, the rest don't. Smartphone: If even one line gets a smartphone you MUST get the Everything Data 1500 plan. Plan is base of $129.99, $19.99 each for lines 3 and 4. $10 per line if you get a smartphone. So if you have 3 lines, 1 smartphone that is $129.99 + $19.99 + $9.99 = $159.99 a month. Non-Smartphone: If you are not on the plan, the question arises does your "ol lady" even need a smartphone? I would recommend getting 3 Rumor Touches and going on the Everything Messaging Plan $99.99. Still way more mins than they need, only $109.99 for 3 lines so you save $50 a month, and unlimited texting. Remember you can pretty easily find a discount off any of those plans.

Checking over my dad's account (which includes my mom and brother) I noticed that both my parents are up for a full upgrade ($150 off etc etc). My dad doesn't care much for upgrading his BB Bold and my mom's comfortable with her Curve. Would I be able to use my mom's upgrade to get my brother the Optimus S? He's coming from my old Hero and I think an Optimus would be a nice upgrade that won't cost anything.

If there's no mail-in rebate, then yes. If there is a rebate, then maybe. Buy it, immediately put it on his line and don't put it on any other lines until you get your rebate check. They don't have to give you the rebate if it's not put on the upgraded line but they usually do.

I don't think it's the new Sprint system that will become available. Any idea if when it does it will make a regular voicemail notification on the phone? I went ahead and did it now because I will be out of the country for six weeks, so getting messages through email is quite useful.

CharlesM posted:I'm gonna repost this question from the last thread since it got closed. You can get a notification of a new voicemail 3 way from Google Voice: 1. Through the Google Voice App. (Which also displays the text transcription, and you can play the voicemail from within the app. No need to "call in" by holding #1 on your dialpad). 2. Via Gmail. 3. Via SMS. If you have a smartphone, you can do any combination of all 3. If you have a dumbphone, you can still get notification of a new voicemail via SMS, and you can then call in to your Google Voice number and access your voicemail that way.
