I told him I'm interested, and I'm willing to talk about his pricing, but I don't see him rejoining reality any time soon...

Good luck convincing a BMW owner that their 20 year old stripper model car is only worth 1200 bucks. Granted those wheels are probably worth a bit more than whatever steelies came with it but a lot of people see BMW and think its automatically worth a ton.

Yeah, I don't have high hopes, but I didn't just contact him to troll him, I really am interested in the car. I just happen to know that what he's asking for it is outrageous around here.

As far as the wheels go, he can take those ugly-rear end things. All those tell me is that I need to spend a few hundred more on bottlecaps and new rubber.

EDIT: AHAHAH, he got back to me in what could best be described as 5th-grade-level English and told me that people who know E30s know this one is a mint classic and it's worth every penny. Well best of luck to you, buddy. :)

KBB is bad at:

Old cars
Rare cars
Cars with enthusiast communities
Geographic variations.

If you're shopping for Camries in Nebraska, it might be useful.

I don't doubt that it's worth more than $1185, but still. Next week someone will come on CL and have the same thing, but for $2K. There are just SO MANY of them around here. I paid under $2K for my current E30 325i, and although it wasn't as nice as his, it's not like I got some rare deal, either. There were several I was looking at that same week. If he were selling it in the Midwest his price would be far more realistic. I mean, it's not even an IS model.

I know there has to be something wrong with the price, or something horribly wrong with the car, but I cant figure out which because the ad is done up pretty nicely. Is this some sort of common scam or potentially gold? I did email the seller, I'll repost what he says.

I'm fairly certain all of those types of ads are scams. Example:
$3300 EVO VIII

I can't find the others that were getting posted a lot. But, basically, a car that appears to be in decent condition, that you know has a higher resale value, and it doesn't have salvage title is usually a scam. Also, I ignore basically all listings that are .jpgs instead of text.

Some people are innocent and will use their real world addresesses in the ad instead of the interposed CL one. The workaround is to do the entire ad as an image.

I have a 1991 BMW convertible for sale. This is an original German car in mint condition. It has been very well maintained and has maintenance records. Anything it needed, it got as well as some extras. Brand new rims and tires the end of last summer. It has never seen salt and barely seen rain. It's stored in a garage all summer and is stored in a car storage from Sept to May. This is a beauty!! I do not have pictures as it is still in storage until the end of April. If you are thinking of a nice convertible, you could look at this one when I bring it home. Asking $13,500.00
