On a Crufts note, a black coated retriever won best in show. There is now a programme on More4 (UK) called 'How to buy a Puppy', it will be up on 4OD once in the next day or so. So far it's had input from the Panorama programme that caused so much up roar with the Kennel Club/RSPCA/Crufts etc.

From what I can see from good ol' GIS the only difference I notice is that their muzzles are a little wider.

Then again, this is compared to Roxy. The MINIATURE American Eskimo. So, really, she's the midget of the Spitz world.

One website I saw claimed that Japanese Spitz tails curl up on the center of their backs while Eskie tails drape to the side. That gave me a good laugh.

How much does Roxy weigh now? Psyche is at 23 lbs, the little fatty fat fat. At any rate, I think Poms are the midgets of the Spitz world. :D

I think she's about 15 or 16 lb? To pick her up feels just a tiny bit heavier than our cat, Wikus, and he's about 12 lb so that seems about right. :D But finally, she's not so much of a skinnybitch. Thank god!

I'm new, and it took me a while to find this thread. My brain kept registering it as the "primates" thread. Not the brightest.

My wife works at a vet clinic; I was on the road. She sent me about 10 texts that, when I finally got into cell reception went from "there's a lovely dog here being put down" to "we're all crying cause we don't want to euth her" to "We've got a new dog." Owner had brought the girl into be put down, because he couldn't afford a surgery she needed. The vet and owner worked it out to surrender the dog to someone who could afford the procedure and rehab.

This photo was how I was introduced to Rosie (now renamed to Rosalita Ford):

I guess she's some strain of "undesirable" because of her wooly coat? The first blow-out was interesting.

She gets on good with our bully-mix, but she has to be the boss and he's pretty careful around her.

We've caught them balled together when they think we're not watching, but scram if we get a camera.

We live in MN so she gets all the snow she wants.

She does NOT share toys well.

I'd never had anything resembling a primitive breed before. It has been educational. I wish I had found this thread earlier, it made for some great laughs and "She's exactly like that!" I'm disappointed that I can't see her ever being off-leash. And she's a giant bitch with other dogs (zero fear of bigger badder dogs, either) so dog parks are kinda iffy. She came to us having never been crated, but took to that extremely well. Learning about the NILIF approach.

TPLO.

The dumbed-down explanation the wife gave me was it was to correct a torn ACL. If anyone else has had to go through that rehab, I feel for you. First off, she's an active breed, and when the surgeon told us how little exercise she was allowed for the first few weeks I was worried. She constantly want to MOVE. Secondly, she's a talker so she cried a lot between pain management.

Just really hard to come home to a new awesome dog, then 2 days later seeing her whimpering in the floor for a month. She limped about twice as long as was expected, and still sits to favor it.

On the flip-side, I think it helped her adapt to being primarily an indoor dog, and welcoming crate-training.

I probably will have a lot of behavior questions, now that I know the thread is here. I'll try and punctuate with pics.

edit: She's 5. We've had her for ~7/8 months now.

I don't envy you at all. We were just preparing for our Husky getting a total hip replacement and the suggested timelines were something like 8 weeks of confinement and 8 weeks of rehab before back to normal exercise. Thankfully (for reasons mentioned within the last few pages) it doesn't look like we need to worry about it yet and potentially not at all. Though the specialist did say that he seems predisposed to tearing his ACL so we have to keep an eye out for that.

Rosalita is beautiful. She almost makes me wish I had the patience to deal with that much fur.

I wanted to share this website with the thred- it's a Finnish kennel that is breeding Western shar pei that are more traditional and functional by crossing them with traditional lines. Their male, Maxim, is one of the most beautiful shar pei I've seen:

This gives me a lot of hope. More breeders seem interested in returning the dogs to their original form. So many of the health issues in shar pei are related to the extreme type that was popular for so long. I hope that more breeders will realize that a less extreme Western shar pei is just as charming, as well as healthier.

From what I've read about them, kinda. Their buttholes are meant to point at the sky (seriously) and the long hind legs probably exaggerate that. I say some of the ones they have look a bit ridiculous though.

Yup, this trait is described as si ngan chiu teen, or "anus facing sky". It helps to set the tail up high, so it looks proud.

Ears are totally one of my favorite things about shar pei. They look so silly and tiny!

This is Viggo, and he's an Icelandic Sheepdog. He's another one of the dogs Cohen plays with at the park.

Icelandic Sheepdogs fascinate me since they're pretty much smack-dab in the middle of primitives and herders. They are a member of the Spitz family and have the typical independent "gently caress you I won't do what you tell me" personalities. They were brought to Iceland by the Vikings (!!!) and are the ancestor of the Shetland Sheepdog and Welsh Corgi. They have double dew-claws on their rear feet, and it's kinda funny lookin'.

They were used as watch dogs and livestock guardians, and when necessary would be used to drive livestock when it strayed. Plague and canine distemper almost wiped out the breed in the late 1800s. In 1969 the Icelandic Dog Breeder Association was established to preserve the breed, and they gained AKC recognition very recently -- in June 2010.

They're thick, stocky dogs with a coat that seems to range from the typical Spitz/Shiba coat to something more Collie-like. Viggo's is definitely of the latter. They're a medium sized breed, probably weighing between 30 and 50 lbs when mature.

Viggo is quite a character. He's very vocal (barkbarkbarkbarkbark) when playing, loves chasing bicycles and anything with a siren. He and Cohen will both wrestle and chase, and have similar pushy attitudes. He's a total lovebug, and I want to bring him home with me.

Quote from a million pages ago, because Icelandic Sheepdogs are the fuckin bomb. I've wanted one ever since I was a kid.

And then my parents bought one for my little brother because they hate me or something.

This is Oskar:

(he likes to climb on furniture and hang out with our cat. They play fight and it's awesome :3:)

I need to take a picture of him sleeping. He folds himself into this really awkward position next to the back door.

He's an rear end in a top hat, and he's my favorite dog ever. Our other dog, an English Springer Spaniel is better behaved, but Oskar is smart, and won't take crap from you. He does basic commands when I ask him to unless I'm asking him in front of a stranger. He looks all around the room, avoiding eye contact, and I can tell he's thinking "heh, not gonna impress your friend today, rear end in a top hat." His undercoat is starting to shed for the spring, and I swear to god, you could sculpt a second dog just from his rear end-fur.

I plan on getting one as soon as I can after I move out. :3: I might even be able to get one of his sister's pups, since they kept her for breeding.

I mean seriously. Read that quote again. VIKINGS.

Well, ours loves to play. He does fetch pretty well, since he follows the "leave it" command, and he loooooves tug-of-war. He does like to make us happy, and is usually a pretty good dog. I think the biggest problem we have with him is when someone comes over (unless he's seen them come through the door a ton of times, like family, or my brother's fiance) he'll start barking A LOT. Once they come in and say hello to him, he'll stop after a minute or two, but it's a little frustrating.

He doesn't cuddle too much, but sometimes, he sits down right next to me looking regal (asking for pets), or he'll lie on his back, using the sofa for support (asking for a belly rub). He's mostly just really fun to watch. Like I said, he play-fights with our cat (our favorite is when he exposes his neck to the cat, standing like two inches away as if going "do it! I dare you!" waiting for the cat to bite him or something) and he makes really funny toned down growly barks, like he knows he's not supposed to bark, but needs to tell us something anyway "aaarrroooo....."

He's independent and stubborn (probably not as much as other primitive breeds), but he has a looot of character, and is seriously just really fun to be around.

And honestly, his shedding isn't too bad. He doesn't leave little hairs everywhere quite so much, like our tabby can (I swear, you pick him up, put him down, and there's a cat shaped outline of shed fur on your shirt). It mostly comes out in little clumps, and that's when you know it's time to brush him.

I present for your approval as primitive, the wondrous Radar, IBZ. He is smug, headstrong, mouthy, of ancient (umm, maybe) lineage, prick-eared, fox-coloured, independent, and very prey-drivey, except for cats and small kids. You may see from the photos that he is also bipedal, just for fun.

Just to prove to the doubters that he's primitive, his tail nearly forms a full ring when he's moving. Plus, he's listed as primitive on the wheel of fortune graphic on the first page of this thread. Like a basenji, only not so portable. Or, photoshop a big Spitz coat onto him.

Did I mention he's a complete and utter arse? And that he also sheds, despite being relatively coatless? Loves me and the kids, doesn't mind the hubby, ignores most people, and goes monkey-poo on Jehovah's Witnesses and delivery people. Husky people, Shiba victims, Basenji weirdos, don't hate him 'cause he's different. There are many colours in the primitive rainbow! (Please. I need a thread where I can post "I have spent close to 500$ on shredded dog beds" and people will understand.)
