This isn't super pertinent to the operation of anyone's phone, but if you didn't read this bawwfest you really should. Watching manchildren complain about the removal of boobies from cm7 is amazing. E: if you have time, most of the real awesome is on the reddit thread linked from the main thread.

I can see both sides of the argument.

On one hand, I am not offended by that wallpaper and I think that anyone who was should lighten the gently caress up.

On the other hand, including it seems out of place and unprofessional in an otherwise very polished and respectable firmware distro. If you want that wall paper, there is no reason that you can just download it to your SD card.

I personally hope that some day there will be a retail phone that ships with CM as its default firmware. And I think that getting rid of that wallpaper is a step that might allow that to happen someday.

I've used both, and amoled is better. That being said it's not worth having to put up with the rest of Samsung's crap to get it.

Repeating the "AMOLED" is better - it's brighter and clearer. Also repeating that it's not worth dealing with all the bullshit just for a screen that isn't exactly a gargantuan leap forward.

Additionally, it's not worth dealing with the abysmal ROM community around the SGS series. Sure, you see big names flashed around like Cyanogen and MIUI on some of the variants, but they're a) not official and b) not supported fully. Anything that's "Official" is similar in kind to back in the day when modding half-life was in vogue and you'd hear about awesome-rear end mods getting started up and then guttering out a few weeks later.

It's not all the community's fault, though. There's a lot of hurdles put up in front of community developers by Samsung by virtue of their goony-rear end hardware and drivers. I'm tempted to go and learn how to code and loving develop roms just so I can see progress on things coming out for my Epic. There's a lot of promise for the basically-a-pre-alpha unofficial CM7 (Alpha 1), but it's lacking MMS, Camera, and GPS (not a big deal since it was broken out of the box :hurr:) as well as hardware acceleration. For extremely early-stage development to have such a short list of major issues is impressive, and massively so.

I still expect a stable gingerbread rom to be out on the Epic before Samsung gets around to it, though.

I understand that in the process of rooting the phone, that you have to downgrade the firmware to a pre-release (?) version of the ROM (this includes baseband I believe?). The closet sperglord in me doesn't quite like not having an up to current firmware, mostly for the reason that I believe battery life issues weren't solved until the version they shipped.

My question is: After rooting, can I retain the root and move back up to the current firmware? I believe there is a "Bloat Free" ROM that looks nice (has all the crapware removed, but is otherwise stock.)

If I'm wrong or sound retarded about this, I apologize. I'm not used to rooting being this delicate.

Good lord. It's an oooooold image that's been photoshopped with a CM logo, that quite frankly sticks out like a sore thumb. Am I offended by underboob? Of course not. But does that belong in an otherwise first-class ROM? Absolutely not. Tell me it didn't stick out in the least after scrolling through a couple dozen wallpapers that (as far as I know) were designed from the start for CM. It smacks of the WM6 ROM days when 2/3 of the ROMs out there were just 13 year old kids taking someone else's serious work and slapping a hideous theme on it that involves mushroom clouds.

There's something odd about the process of rooting your phone, going through the triple-wipe process, then restoring data, at some point likely using loving shell commands, then being unable to do a GIS for "cm_girls.jpg"

This sounds like an old root method for the MyTouch Slide. What it involves is moving back everything to an engineering release or at least a pre-release where the exploit is still there. This makes it so that the exploit can happen and the bootloader can be unlocked.

Taking a quick look at the root method, you can move back to the normal release version with root after you're done.

Another MIUI question: is the MIUI backup something separate from restoring your apps from the Market via your Google account? I did a nandroid restore back to CM7 since I couldn't figure out a way to quickly get my apps back after a fresh install of MIUI; guess I'll have to use Titanium for that until MIUI backup does it's thing?

So I installed MIUI 1.3.25 on my EVO, and I love it, but I've ran into a kind of deal breaker.

I need to be able to sync my phone with works exchange crap, and when I do, it requires a PIN to unlock.

When I set up email as exchange, I keep getting kicked back an error that says:

"This server requires security feathers you phone does not support"

I've even gone in and set a PIN, and it still errors.

Is there another app, or a way that I can get this working? I like this ROM and would love to keep it but like I said.. dealbreaker.

MIUI Backup is a distinct backup app for MIUI. It's for restoring from another MIUI version, and it's not automatic. It's Titanium Backup, more or less.

I'm using Exchange on mine, so it's not a general Exchange thing, figure out which security setting they have required and you can search for a workaround or timetable on that specifically.

Under Settings - Call Settings I just have:

Voicemail
Voicemail Service
Voicemail Settings

Advanced Settings V.30.1
Vibrate on Answer
Vibrate every 45 seconds
Vibrate on hangup
Vibrate call waiting
Keep screen awake
Always use proximity
Always back to call log
Missed call LED notify
Show nick/organization
Left-hand mode (I'm guessing this is just a comedy-option to make fun of the iPhone, right?)
Blacklist

Other call settings
Voicemail Notification
Voice Privacy (The description says "Enable enhanced privacy mode"...what, exactly, does this do?)

Internet Call Settings
Accounts
Use Internet calling

Thanks for this...if CM stopped including this feature, I'll look into this app.

I installed MIUI 1.3.11 on my Nexus S the other night and it's working really well except for a few things:

- bigger files (i.e. apps from the markets) don't download over 3G. they just hang there until I connect to wifi then bam bam boom it's done. I still haven't set up my carrier's apn settings yet (when I do it should say H instead of 3G) but one thing shouldn't have anything to do with the other

- some albums are split up into two or three albums in both the MIUI music player and ^3. That never happened with the same files on the same phone with previous ROMs

- Swype tracing not working: I can tap in the words but the predictive engine thing I guess isn't working. Official beta from the website. Previous version from Titanium Backup doesn't work either, but those never do (iirc I've had to redownload Swype with the installer every time I've switched to a new rom)

Thanks in advance! I'm loving the interface even though it's still about half-Chinese, but I can read enough Chinese to figure most stuff out anyway.

e: One more thing: is there a way to set up a hotspot toggle in the notification tray like in CM7?

Update on general principle, it's nicer.

Swype trading, change keyboards and gently caress around with the language. I've had this issue every single time I try to install Swype.

You can speed up the ones in the CM7 settings, or I think you could move Hancent to a group that doesn't blink - it's been a while since I've looked into it.

I gave MIUI a shot on my EVO yesterday. After it first booted, it couldn't read my sdcard. I rebooted and it would just vibrate 5 times and blink the notification LED. Pulled the battery, tried again. Turns out it's stuck in Qualcomm Diagnostics Mode, something about the kernel command line being set incorrectly.

My bootloader somehow reverted to S-ON.

I ended up grabbing the latest PC36IMG and flashing back to stock. It will only boot when connected to a computer, cannot see the sdcard or charge over USB when powered on (because of qualcomm diag mode), and "reboots" after about 3 minutes of use. By "reboots", I mean it shuts down, vibrates 5 times, and blinks at me until I remove the battery, hook it up to a computer, boot into fastboot, select Clear Data, select No, and then let it boot.\

I believe some part of the MIUI image caused the issue, since it was initially responsible for its own kernel command line, and qxdm took effect on the first boot after the flash. Either way, I'm taking it to a Sprint store today to get it replaced (I hope). Other than qxdm, it's stock as gently caress right now after all my repair attempts.
