Large portions of Afghanistan are stunningly beautiful and rich for cultivation. The main reason it has been tossed around so much militarily over the past couple centuries though, is because in the 'great game' it is seen as a gateway to Asia proper. As for the photos, I would guess he is using a Hassleblad/Fuji X-pan.

The premise for the movie sounded really awesome and then I watched the trailer and it just looked like terrible, over-Hollywooded poo poo. Zero interest in seeing it. But I might look to see if there's a book about them that tries a little less hard to make photographing a war-ravaged country sexy.

I'll probably Netflix it eventually though. Will also head over to RFF for the inevitable gear-sperging.

Looks really, Hollywood. I don't know, I've seen the same conflict covered shortly in War Photographer and I doubt anything else will have the same impact. Also, the Bang Bang Club is such an undocumented group of photographers I'm glad something's finally done about them. By the way, I wonder who will play the James Nachtwey cameo. He was there when Ken Oosterbroek died EDIT: And holy poo poo, Joao Silva actually lost both of his legs recently in Afghanistan. I haven't heard that yet. War Photographer was fantastic film, I loved the way it was shot. Very creative and informative, especially when he's on scene since you could see the environment around him while he was determining what he wanted to document and what was relevant to him. I also liked the documentary "Shooting Robert King" which I watched based on a recommendation months ago in this thread. Here's the trailer, it does have nudity and death so nsfw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew4OyneLv84

How tolerant is the 3DS's viewing angle? Not very tolerant.. 30 degree viewing angle or so before you hit the edge of the prism. I am not good at stereoscopic vision so the 3d effect of the DS seems really limited even when inside the recommended zone. B&H Photo has a video about currently available 3d cameras on their website.

If it were real, it would probably cost $10000, and also drive prices of film cameras/dead mount lenses way up. I'm fine with it being fake.

Replace the film pressure plate with a sensor, attach a small generator/capacitor to the film advance so you don't need awkward battery packs, put an SD slot where the film cartridge would go. Easy!

Beastruction posted:Replace the film pressure plate with a sensor, attach a small generator/capacitor to the film advance so you don't need awkward battery packs, put an SD slot where the film cartridge would go. Easy! How much of a technical impossibility, is it? Put aside the commercial considerations for a moment. You wouldn't need a big battery pack, since the majority of the power requirements are the shutter/mirror actions, plus the LCD backlighting. With 32GB microSD, there's plenty of room for memory. How thick does a sensor have to be? This says that you can have small sensor 0.39mm thick http://documents.irevues.inist.fr/bitstream/handle/2042/16890/dtip08201.pdf?sequence=1 I think that's thin enough to fit against the back plate. (let's ignore the economics that would make designing a large, flat sensor totally impractical) I can see that squeezing the chips into a volume the size of a film canister is going to be tricky, since they are usually contructed on flat planes. I'd guess that the biggest issue is that you couldn't sync the sensor to the shutter.

Does anyone have a good way to go through their flickr contacts photos? I generally friend everyone who posts in the dorkroom, as well as photographers I find online, but there doesnt seem to be a good way to visualize the pictures. I've downloaded a couple apps, but for some reason I dont want to open another application besides my browser to look at Flickr photos. Anyone have any advice on this?

There's nothing worse than coming back from a small walkaround shoot and having a card full of technically well shot photos, but they're all ridiculously boring. I almost like it better when I have zero keepers because I was shooting +2EV accidentally or something.
