Hi there, my understanding of jazz is less broad than I'd wish so I need a little help here. I'm trying to find artists who put out music that sounds a bit like this outside of Tati films. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aM7rIOHF9tM annndddd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyLa5zxiRu4 Essentially, focus on drums and keys with a decently fast pace and a bit scattered sounding. One is by James Campbell and the other is by Francis Lemarque, as far as I can tell. I can't seem to find anything by either of them outside of soundtrack work but I know there must be something out there that is similar in sound.

Lyrically, it's unreleased Woody Guthrie poetry set to music. Guthrie's daughter asked Bragg to do it, and Bragg asked Wilco to participate. I believe both worked on the music, and the album features both performing.

You need Kleeer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB6WTVmbSiw) because everyone else is going to tell you Cameo and Zapp and stuff like that, but nobody will mention Kleeer. Out of everything posted, this is pretty much spot-on. Have any other recommendations with high-pitched "wakka wakka wakkas" and "diddly doos" and all that fancy synth stuff? poo poo's making me want to get dude-pregnant. Oh, and to clarify my sudden infatuation with funk music... I went to my friend's birthday party and brought my Volcano as a party favor. I was higher than I've ever been at my life at a house full of people I've never met before. One man looked like Jesus and was playing the banjo. A fat and jolly black man only stopped laughing between rips of fresh green. A fellow resembling Aladdin wearing a bright orange shirt was tripping on acid drawing with crayons while a girl sang inanities into a microphone plugged into nothing. Out of nowhere, the Jesus-looking man stops playing banjo. The room goes silent: the man stops laughing, Aladdin stops drawing, the girl stops singing. "Wanna hear some funk?" "Uh, what?" "Yeah, man." "What, like on the banjo?" "gently caress no, man. Check it." Jesus then guides us to another room in the house and flips on the lights. Well, not really. He flips on a light switch that turns on a motherfucking fog machine and disco ball. The entire room, through a myriad of spectral reflections, revealed what appeared to be hundreds upon thousands of dollars worth of DJ equipment, audio rigging, and vinyl records stacked meticulously in obsessive neatness. The Jesus-looking man turns back to me and confidently begins to speak. "Funk mode engaged." First song that comes on (as I later find out) is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BUjijGOZYkQ Immediately Aladdin starts dancing a mixture of Liquid (techno dance style) and The Worm. Microphone girl won't stop twirling. Black-Man (as he preferred to be called) resumes laughing. At this point I'm practically catatonic. The only thing I can do is sit back as this sensual goddess called funk gives me a full-transducer body massage. Jesus looks at me and says, with a look of knowing that he's teaching me something important: "Funk, man. One love." And disappears into the night. The rest of the night is a complete blur. I somehow wake up in my own bed, 40 miles away, and the only thing I can think of in my mind is, like some addict of an inner-city drug, where I can get my next hit of digital love. So yeah, funk is pretty sick, I guess. I think I'm gonna track down this guy again and see if he can burn me a mix tape. So far nothing posted sounds anything like what he's played. I think it's also because he is an actual synth-funk remix DJ. If I can find his site, I'll post some of it here. Completely blew my mind. Xovaan, just start with Parliament/Funkadelic and move on from there, and lay off the dope for a while, it's making you sound like a maniac. Also, maybe you need to look at your reasons for looking for funk if you use terms like "inner-city drug."

Oh god, overwhelmed by the dubstep thread. Someone rec me 'intro into dubstep' music. Like, who all should I have at least a basic understanding of?
|
# ? Apr 6, 2011 22:45 |

Well, firstly it kinda depends what you're looking for in "dubstep" because there's the earlier stuff (which is still influenced by dub) and then there's the stuff that dominated the US scene which is all wobbles and has more in common with bloghouse in my opinion. Then there's the stuff that dominating the UK scene now which is all funky / future garage or whatever they call it, typified by Night Slugs etc I guess. Dubstep is different things to different people so don't take what I list as thee definitive or anything. I suppose the essentials would be Burial, Skream, Shackleton, Digital Mystikz, Kryptic Minds, Scuba... In general I actually think it's way easier to recommend labels as opposed to specific artists for dubstep: DMZ, Hyperdub, Skull Disco, 3024, Tempa, Punch Drunk, Hessle Audio, Tectonic That ought to be more than enough to get you started, just dig around the internet and I'm sure you'll find plenty. I was reading about King Crimson on Wikipedia, when I noticed this description of their recent sound: "The band’s efforts to blend additional elements into their music have continued into the 21st century, with more recent developments including drum and bass-styled rhythm loops and extensive use of MIDI and guitar synthesis." I'm interested to hear these "drum and bass-styled rhythm loops", anyone know of a recording that does a good job of exemplifying this?
