I just got the first volume of Vinland Saga in Japanese, and I was wondering about something. Anybody know why it sometimes switches from vertical to horizontal writing? Like the very first scene was written horizontally. It's the first time I've ever seen that, just wondering what the reason was for it. Purely stylistic, because they're Europeans, more emphatic? Thanks for the thread, I probably never would have looked at it otherwise and it's pretty cool so far.

Fuzzy Pipe Wrench posted:Just wondering about the title of the thread. Foreign history from which viewpoint? Japanese, US? There's a lot of really good samurai manga, but there's a cultural familiarity expected in those cases that makes a look at the world the story is set in largely unnecessary. A 'foreign' history manga has to introduce readers to the setting in a way that, to me, is a lot more interesting. On that note, I just saw Rose of Versailles recently, and I learned there was a sequel manga, Glory of Napoleon, and I was wondering if it had ever been translated in any form. The idea of a manga about Napoleon is intriguing enough that I'd quite like to read it, even if it evidently doesn't have the popular appeal of Rose of Versailles.

I am completely enthralled and in love with Otoyome Gatari, also as a middle easterner seeing the Central Asian clothing done right makes me giddy like you wont believe, it's a really nice story too.

I got caught up with both Historie and Otoyomegatari. Historie - While the historical accuracy of pretty much everything so far regarding Eumenes' life is off in a lot of ways, it's still a really fun manga to read. Eumenes is a cool protagonist and the backdrop of the fourth century BC feels authentic enough (outside of small nitpicks like CPR or chess). Otoyomegatari - This is my new favorite manga. Adorable as heck and oh my god the artwork is so amazing. The characters are all so lovable. EDIT Read all of Vinland Saga too. It's pretty great! jonjonaug fucked around with this message at 13:01 on Mar 18, 2011 |

Just started reading Historie and the question I was about to ask seems to have just been answered. It was going to be about him not being Hieronymus' son but I'm guessing its fictionalised a lot more than that? Is there anything more like Vinland Saga? I guess something that is between Ares and Vinland Saga in terms of story and combat etc would be perfect. Ideally with art closer to Vinland Saga. I'm kind of weird about art, Ares I think is terrible but I don't have any issue reading while some stories have sounded good and I just can't handle the art.

Closest you get really is Berserk, which is quiiiite a bit different plot wise.

If its got over 100 chapters I've almost certainly read it. I think I'm honestly hosed for new series that either aren't terrible or the art doesn't put me off.

The first thing I thought was "Yes, Eumenes, it does felt like 3 years since we last saw you in Cardia".
|
# ? Mar 27, 2011 17:23 |
Yeah, that was really a great moment for Eumenes and all of us who followed him every step of the way. His ever so slightly smug expression on page 8 was fantastic, especially as he was totally professional and above it all otherwise. It's kind of annoying how SomeManga doesn't have chapter 67. Is there some way to point that out to them or something?

Everyone breaks down under pressure. The real question is how long can Canute keep it together. Edit: Although he has been keeping a lit on it for a while now I guess. This all goes back to his dramatic character shift. He bottled up all of his emotions since then and the stress of doing that is finally starting to show. Zorak posted:Well that was creepy as poo poo. And it looks like Canute has already lost track of his goal. It's certainly unsettling to watch it happen, though. Honestly that kind of ugly progress is one of my favorite things about this manga, and the plot thread that most resembles the themes of Planetes. In that manga a morally ambiguous businessman did terrible things with real human costs while perusing his goal, but ultimately that inspired and drove on the main character and the goal of the whole project was achieved. You know it's bad, but it works, so you can't really be sure it's wrong... all you know is success is bittersweet when its foundation is so rotten. I love it.

Eiba posted:Has he? His goal was never that simple or clean. I think this is the natural result of his goal rather than something else. As he said, you can't have a stable system with two kings. No matter how well they got along personally, political forces would have pit them against each other in the long run. Killing his brother was the much more sensible option than war... and the much less human option. IDK, like the King said way back when, he too used to have high-minded ideals, but power gives rise to desiring more power. It becomes its own goal after time. Also, on the Otoyomegatari front: it's been almost a month since the last chapter, so I suppose it's worth asking now... is the release schedule gonna be affected by the Tsunami/ Earthquake situation?

Me and the Devil Blues Jim Crow south. Blues legend Robert Johnson. Clyde of Bonnie and Clyde. Buy it. I only just heard about it today, but after reading the first several chapters, I think this manga definitely belongs in this thread. Someone who's read more of the thing can give a more substantive sales pitch, but the above sold me on the manga (even without any prior interest in the blues).
