Its a pretty cool thing to have, everyone asks what it is and I say its my boarding pass to the mothership... which always leads to interesting conversations.

Is that the alien version of a bar code? Do you think they will have an alien at the ramp leading up to their boarding ship (the mother ship will be hovering opposite the moon) with a bar-code scanner looking thing?

That's me! Therapy at least once a week.

There are a lot of reasons to go to therapy, some people may be going just to have a personal relationship with someone. Some just to have somebody to talk to, and of course people have serious problems and need help navigating through life.

What I don't understand is why Howard sees a psychiatrist who does not give him meds instead of a psychologist. I don't think Howard knows the difference.

Macklin, you son of a bitch
So, Howard was talking about he thinks he NEEDS people and that is why he is in therapy. He needs Ronnie to drive him around (he lives in the 60s on the UWS - is it possible he doesn't know how to get to his office across the street from Radio City on his own?!) and he NEEDED Jackie.

Maybe he NEEDS his therapist in the same way. It's gotta suck to be rich - how do you know if you really need help or if you are just being milked?

What the hell is the skeleton in the closet that makes a (near)billionaire, married to a supermodel, who works 4 days a week so unhappy/angsty/neurotic?

I know he was bullied for his race/religion, told he was worthless by his parents, busted his rear end for every rung in the career ladder he's climbed, and had his rear end checked with a flashlight for pinworms.

People have put up with way worse, and topped out with an average looking wife and a 60ka year job. Look to any middle/high school thread in GBS or PYF for some examples.

Hearing him berate the wannabe musician that called in this morning turned my stomach. He's at the top of the game, and somehow seems far angrier than any of the Jake LaMotta type DJ's who never had a shot outside a local Top-40 market. Theres got to be an issue that drives 3 visits to therapy a week, but I dont think its anything thats been revealed on air so far.

chiz posted:

Plus his mother did a huge number on him, huuuuuuuuuge.

I can guess. Then again, that's why I got my rep here. But honestly, I'd like to try to guess.

Howard has gone through a lot of poo poo in his life. He's a very determined man who used all of that poo poo to keep pushing himself. His whole life has been pursuing a goal of success that he thinks will reverse all of those things in his life. Or somehow rationalize them so he can find some kind of catharsis and justify everything in his life.

But it hasn't happened. It won't happen. It's a very capitalistic conceit because money and success are marketed to people as the end result of working hard. Howard got very lucky and managed to hit this point in his career. But what he really wants is a functioning life. He wants to be rid of the doubts and the anxieties that his parents gave him. He wants to be accepted, to be loved, to just be a normal human being with a loving wife and children and without all of the stress. In short, he wants an ideal life that being a very big name in radio cannot give him. He makes the classic mistake that most ambitious people do: that if you hit this certain point in your job that everything else--personal stuff, mostly--will follow suit because it just will. And I think he's having trouble coming to terms with that.

What I know from my own experiences and what I have read is that Howard's parent put self doubt in his mind.

Of course I am guessing that it is all real and not a bit

His mother put constant fears in him about the Holocaust and family disappearing. Also, she suffered from severe depression and has used meditation to overcome those problems. Mental illness can be genetic and it is transferred through nurturing.

Honestly, his father sounds like he was verbally abusive to him.

He is fortunate to have a mother and a father though.

Howard's hosed up, but his shrink also doesn't idolize him (I assume) and he's legally obligated to both listen not to rat him out to the press. That's probably rare in his world. Sure most people have trusted friends, but Howard doesn't have the best judgment when it comes to that. The man was BFF with Crazy Cabbie for chrissakes.

I know this is the "way out there" category but could Howard's marriage to Beth be causing some family tension? He makes vague comments about family issues from time to time.

I know his daughters don't live with him but I never hear anything about Beth's involvements with them. Also when Howard has his parents over or he goes to visit them, Beth always seems to be somewhere else.

Beth isn't Jewish and therefore cannot have true Jew children which is why Howard will not impregnate her.

Howard has mentioned a few times that Beth gets along well with his daughters and his parents and they love her.

Beth is young so she likes to go out, have fun and not stay home like Howard. There have been times when she goes out with friends and leave him at home.

I don't want to encroach on the Mad Doctor's territory, but Howard's "family" issues are probably something as mundane as "A random third cousin got knocked up at 15 and is now asking me for money, do I tell them to gently caress off and not set a precedent for tertiary begging relatives (Cousin Richie) or do I help them because it seems like a legitimate cause".

I'm sure it's extremely boring and only an issue to Howard because his ego has turned whatever random thing it is into HIS problem.

If it was a legit scandal or anything of any interest, TMZ would have poked it up by now.

I'll throw my crazy theory out. Closet homosexuality. Covered up by a 30 year career of bikinis, tickle chairs, and sybian rides. It also explains Ralphs presence and the extreme willingness to pay a huge price to anyone who can keep things confidential.

It can also explain:
- 1st divorce
- 2nd wife (model) with a cold fish sex life
- parental/family issues
- Obsession with cleanliness and hiding his jerk rags, etc.

Wow, I almost believe my own bullshit.

I don't think Howard is a closet homosexual.

His divorce can easily be explained by his transition into "Hampton Howie." Beth is literally his dream girl, so marrying her makes sense. Number 3 explains number 4. His mom (at least once) embarrassed him in front of his friends when she found his underwear with some skidmarks.
