I wanted to hear a bit more from the ones who did leave. I mean neither of them left because they realised it was all so incredibly wrong, and Louis didn't really ask what their views were now. One of them did say she lost her parents to a cult but I kind of think the other might still be on the same page as her family, just not with them anymore.

also it was funny how scared they all were of him, like he was some evil force that might tempt them away from god if they weren't careful and defensive the whole time

Yeah that seemed pretty weird to me. They are obviously so entrenched in this belief system and yet at the same time there's something about Theroux or the BBC that scares them. I can understand them hovering around the kids because a nice sane person questioning indoctrinated opinions might disrupt the batshit crazy but even 'ol man Phelps seemed to view him as a threat when last he viewed him with derision.

I think I prefer the earlier one. This felt a lot more closed in and it felt like they were using Theroux a little bit to get some more exposure.

I love the american reaction to the BBC though. Maybe it's just the WBC but those three little letters seem to indicate a force greater than nature to a lot of Americans.

And you are right about the lack of time spent on the ones who left. Maybe it would have been a better counterpoint to the earlier documentary if he spent most of this one talking with them and finding out how they are adjusting to life outside of the weirdness. I know the whole Theroux thing is Weird People Living Weird Lives Let's Take A Peek but I felt that ground was already covered fairly well in the first.

I'd like him to revisit the brothel in Nevada though. That one is probably my favourite and I often wonder what his partner thought of it. Theroux really seemed to be enjoying himself there.

Raskin had one problem: Jobs regarded him as an insufferable theorist or, to use Jobs's own more precise terminology, "a shithead who sucks".

This is a silly post with little news value.

Phelps himself was a fairly successful lawyer in his earlier life before he was disbarred. Proper cases, not just this church stuff. Took a lot of civil rights cases at a time when many wouldn't touch them (though according to people he worked with he was a massive racist himself, just not in front of the clients).

But really, they're a bunch of comfortable middle class families with real jobs outside the church.

They do spend quite a lot though. They spend around $200 000 a year on travel costs alone. That's some serious dollar.

Why does Big Brother bother people so much? It exists in its own time slot and magazines (Heat) and newspapers (Daily Star, The Sun - and if you're reading those and Big Brother content is what you find upsetting about them, then you are a oval office)

It's not like the sport, the comes on will nilly at all hours and removes things people watch.

So I don't know if this is news to anyone in here or not, but remember when Stewart Lee talked about his disastrous gig at Pestival in 41st Best Standup?

Well it turns out that was actually a real thing. I just thought it was something he made up for the show.

You can watch it here

It is actually a lot better than it sounds. Unfortunately Lee doesn't actually ask anyone if they are a sardine though.

Because giving out about the likes of big brother offers an opportunity for people to feel smug and superior to the people who do watch it.

Because Big Brother is one of our biggest cultural lows. I can accept these days people have a issue reading books. Thats cool, the internet is fostering your reading skills.

But when they sit down and enjoy watching a program in a house full of crazy desperate people doing sod in an attempt to be famous it just fills me with dispair. Big Brother is several steps away from a televised desperate freak show.

It is pretty exploitive and the worst people ever make money from it. I mean, there are a million other things a human being can waste their time with now.

Anyone who liked the Louis Theroux documentary should take some time to give this a read:
http://www.robertslevinson.com/gaylesissues/features/collect/phelps/bl_phelpsmain.htm
It's a fairly comprehensive story of the Westboro baptists, based on interviews with some of the older kids who've left. That family is far more damaged than it would seem.

Also, a lot of the younger women involved in the church are ridiculously attractive. That is all.

Yes there are, but people like Big Brother and what's wrong with that? There is an element of exploitation, yes, but everyone going in to that house knows what they're letting themselves in for. They want to be famous and for better or worse, they're given that opportunity.

Out of interest, who are the "worst people ever" you mentioned?
