Duke sounds so awesome to me - women everywhere, good sports culture, good BBQ, cool campus, solid weather, and ATL says they're the douchiest students so since ATL says it that makes my mind immediately go to coolest.

Is it an English-language MBA? That's pretty sweet. I should've done something in Poland or Germany instead of dealing with this poo poo. Oh yeah American posters, this is what articling in Canada is like. We had a guest speaker in my [really awesome] written advocacy class talk about his recent articling experience in a prominent criminal defence firm. He worked 100 hours a week for 10 months and put on 40 lbs. Hireback is never guaranteed and you don't earn a full salary and can't get bonuses/shares/whatever. woot.

More broadly, would transferring from a T30, top 5% to a T4-10 open many more doors? I don't want NY BIGLAW by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm fully aware that awesome jobs (Fed Gov't., midlaw) isn't easy to get. Would the extra ~$70K in debt really pay off?

Anyone in NYC looking to sublet out their apartment for this summer? I'm a 2L looking for somewhere to live for the summer. Contact me at: jake1357 at optonline dot net. Would I have landed it without making the move? I don't know. The one big piece of advice I'd give you is you need to ask yourself more questions than "is it worth it for jobs?" Where you want to live, what kind of environment you want, and if you have close friends/family in the area that you don't want to be far away from are really important things to consider.

This is correct. I loved doing National Trial but by that point it was about my sixth year of being involved in mock trial so I found it relatively low stress. It also helped that I loved doing it and considered practices fun. Also, law school trial competitions tend to be a lot easier than undergrad mock trial competition mostly because the cases are simpler and the quality of competition is so much worse. Frogzilla lives with roommates who may or may not have lost a great sum of money forex trading; living in his room may wind up exposing you to a steady stream of Yakuza coming to extract payment from their client. It probably won't bother them if they happen to chop off the wrong finger... The Sri Lankan girl's family still thinks that she's in Teacher's College, so you really don't have to worry about it.

Speaking of housing, anyone have suggestions for Washington DC? I am working in the Foggy Bottom area, looking for a studio or 1BR. There are a few bus lines that go by work, so I could live in a variety of different places. However, so far I've only found furnished places on Craigslist that are like $2500 a month.

Oh my god, living in Los Angeles without a car would be awful. You will be able to make it through a summer but even downtown Los Angeles is not exactly a public-transit-friendly place. Don't expect to be doing much outside of work unless you get rides.
