Mistletoe Donkey, Sleeper is funny.

Gun Crazy was very good. It was nice to see a couple truly in love in a noir, and I believed their romance the whole way. The ending was a surprise, but it fit perfectly with the characters. 4/5

Bed and Board
The continuing adventures of Antoine Doinel.
Hearts and Minds
I always confuse this with Night and Fog
A Bittersweet Life
The Koreans haven't let me down yet.
The Piano Teacher
Haneke nooooo
Sleuth
This sounds very similar to Deathtrap. I hope its better.
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans
I'm going to reserve a spot on my shameful list for the movie on the most lists at iCheckMovies. I don't really know anything about this one, I hadn't even heard of it until a few months ago, but its on 21 lists.
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
This sounds very interesting.
Tokyo Story
Reserving a spot on this list for the highest TSPDT movie I haven't seen.
Before Sunrise
This gets a lot of praise, but I don't like Ethan Hawke at all.
Shock Corridor
Don't know too much about it.

More of a one-sided romance, though, isn't it? If you want a great romance in a noir, check out They Live By Night.

BTW, the reason I haven't posted in this thread in a while is because I stole the idea and started the same thing on another forum. Getting assignments from two different "shameful" threads would just get too confusing (and I've already got enough stuff to watch).

It seems to be very popular so far over there, although no one's had a chance to watch their assignment yet.

I'll definitely check that out, but I don't really think that the romance was one sided. She was in love with the adventure, but I think she truly loved him too. I thought it was one sided at first, when she wanted to split up after the heist, I assumed she was going to ditch him. Once they decided not to split up, her expression was one of genuine affection for him.

That's partially what I liked about Gun Crazy, because it was hard to tell if she was actually in love with him or not during the whole movie. She seemed to be playing him at the beginning, but was genuinely in love with him by the end, so it's interesting to think where that transition happened.

Hope you enjoy it.

As for Breathless i'm quite divided with it. One hand I enjoyed the unconventional nature of it all, and all the clever editing, on the other hand I did notice that I was just watching a movie about nothing, not the Seinfeld Nothing type of nothing, and that turned me off. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I enjoy the idea behind it, a different way to tell a story, one that uses the language of cinema to more extent, but what's actually happening in the movie is mighty boring and uninteresting. And I think that was what Godard was doing really. Toying around with the language of cinema and not really paying attention to the rest.
So you have this really interesting movie from a technical stand point, but the characters, story and what it's trying to say seem to be stuck somewhere in development hell.

I know that if you pick up Citizen Kane, the last thing you will get is a strong story, it is more of a visual experience and all that, but Charles Foster Kane is actually an interesting character, unlike the two wankers that feature in Breathless. I rewatched multiple times Citizen Kane, and probably will rewatch it many more in the future, I don't think I'll ever see Breathless again, unless it's for some film festival or film night with friends.

Liked it for the technical aspects, found everything else a bore. And for some reason the "wacky" soundtrack reminded me of The Third Man.

My shame list:

:zombie:Infernal Affairs Scorsese remade it so it should be good.

:zombie:Once Upon a Time in America It's so long...and it's been in this list for so long.

High and Low Sounds like a Kurosawa take on Hitchcock's type of movie really. Should be good.

La Dolce Vita 8 1/2 is one of my favorite movies, but I gave up watching this one the first time.

Amelie Actually I think I have seen this movie...Or maybe not.

The Wild Bunch More Westerns!

Dial M for Murder And now in 3D!

Singin' in the Rain Time for something lighter.

Touch of Evil "I'm supposed to do a thriller for Universal. They want Charlton Heston as a Mexican."

Boogie Nights Another PT Anderson movie, involving the porn film industry apparently.

Have seen so far:Mulholland Drive, The Departed, 2001:A Space Odyssey, M, The Trial, Vertigo, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, On the Waterfront, Magnolia, Brazil, Days of Heaven, The Shining, Throne of Blood, The Searchers, La Grand Illusion, Ladri di Biciclette, Tokyo Story, À bout de souffle.

Not as perfect as Leone's earlier stuff, but epic nonetheless.

The Asphalt Jungle was a satisfying noir. The characters' personalities were clearly identified, the repercussions of their actions seemingly unavoidable. Definitely was an inspiration for later heist films. The way Sterling Hayden locks his eyes on someone is kind of scary, although it made me chuckle because of my mental picture of "rainwater and grain alcohol" General Ripper.

New list:

La Dolce Vita This will be my first Fellini picture

The Killing Now the earliest Kubrick I have not seen

Reds The most epic in scope of Warren Beatty; kind of sounds like an interesting biography, given his political views

The Abyss I've got the Special Edition and "making of" documentary, looking forward to it

Bringing Out the Dead This one's got potential

The Insider I can get down with Michael Mann and Al Pacino any time; intriguing subject matter

Inside Job Most recent Best Documentary, seems watchable and relevant

Watched: Once Upon a Time in America, The Sting, MASH, Ran, The Big Sleep, Army of Shadows, On the Waterfront, Fantastic Planet, Annie Hall, Barton Fink, The 400 Blows, La Grande Illusion, Gandhi, The Hill, Manhattan, The Host, The Bicycle Thief, The Asphalt Jungle

I haven't seen it, but if Pacino is good in it, then it has to be worth a look.

North by Northwest is brilliant all around. The pacing is so fast I can't believe it was only 2 hours. I felt like there was 4 hours of movie crammed into it. The music works really well with the intense scenes. Everything about this movie is fantastic. Cary Grant is an exceptional actor.

New List:

1. Some Like it Hot - Have never seen a movie with Monroe.

2. To Kill a Mockingbird - I've seen a few bits but never the entire thing.

3. Nikita - Same director as Leon, all I know is it's action and has been recommended to me (I love a good action movie).

4. Slumdog Millionaire - Most recent best picture movie I haven't seen. If I can watch it I would finally be able to argue why Wall-E deserved it! I have heard great things about this movie.

5. Rebecca - Hitchcock's best picture film. Like most everything else that's not recent on this list, I'm going in blind.

6. On the Waterfront - Classic Brando that I've missed.

7. How to Train Your Dragon - Goon favorite. I guess I'm making this my animated slot.

8. Paths of Glory - I know absolutely nothing other than what I quickly saw when I clicked the imdb page. And I didn't know it was a Kubrick movie with Kirk Douglas.

9. Harvey - Know nothing other than it's another James Stewart movie that was well received. I've enjoyed everything I've seen him in so far.

10. Platoon - Hey its got 2 of the stars of Major League. I imagine this has a bit of a different tone.

One of the best war movies ever made.

Ikiru was really touching. The movie starts out fairly depressing but by the end I really felt uplifted. This movie has many great scenes, of course the iconic swingset shot but also the scene where Watanabe sings the song in the saloon, the quick confrontation with the Yakuza boss, and the closing shot. The structure of the second half was slightly jarring but I quickly got used to it. Amazing film.

1. It's a Wonderful Life - Seems like it might be too cheesy.

I agree that the form definitely takes priority over the function, but I disagree about the characters not being interesting. At least Michel anyway. His cold, narcissistic disconnection with the world around him was really fascinating to me. He was so full of himself and confident and reckless. He glances at a newspaper article about a dead cop and his face plastered all over it, and he doesn't bat an eye. It's as if he feels he's living the life of a movie hero. Atheistdeals.com , I give you Jules and Jim.

The Pawnbroker was great but I'm still undecided about how great. Steiger is absolutely fantastic as the repugnantly sympathetic Holocaust survivor devoid of humanity. This is contrasted very well with various aspects of rundown city life, and the people who cycle through his shop. Visually the film is really well done with quick flash cuts that really make you connect with the titular pawnbroker. There's a narrative holding it all together, though, and I'm actually not sure it helps. It's not that it's bad or uninteresting but I felt it took away from the impact of the film and its sincerity but I'd have to think about it more. It's also surprising how much this got away with for 1964.

Updated list:

La grande guerra I get the feeling this is one of those overlooked classics.

The Ascent Not seen anything by Shepitko but this is highly praised and nearly every post 1930s Soviet film I've seen has been a hit with me.

Les dimanches de Ville d'Avray Criticker says I'll love this, it's French and it won the best Foreign Film Oscar.

El Sol del membrillo Curious about this, didn't even know it was a doc until just now.

Les misérables (1934) Four and a half hours, really?I've never read the book so I have little idea what to expect.

India Song I've read mixed things about this, but I'm intrigued by the idea. Not enough to watch it on my own however, which is where this thread comes in.

Dance, Girl, Dance I have no idea about this, but it's certainly something I should see. Dorothy Arzner was a pioneer and I know nothing about her.

Klute Neo-noir with Jane Fonda as a prostitute.

Spione Another Fritz Lang silent. Sounds pretty cool.

Subarnarekha I've seen one Ghatak film, it was magnificent. Don't know why I haven't gotten around to this one or any others.

I thought the movie was going more into that zone, cause of the scene where Michel is in the lobby of a cinema admiring Bogart, I was hoping for more cinema connections, but there didn't seem to be many. Maybe In just missed them. But then the movie halts for almost half an hour, so he and the girl can make sexlove, and I couldn't take these two people, who are full of themselves, anymore.
Okay saying the movie halts is a bit unfair, it's probably the most important section of it. It's when you see how different they are from each other and it even maps the rest of the movie. I just didn't care for any of them.

I was rather underwhelmed by Au Hasard Balthazar. There were things I liked about it, like the sparseness of the dialogue, the framing of shots, and I take back what I said about the donkey. But I didn't like the style of the editing or the storytelling, and none of the performances or characters really grabbed me. I'll probably revisit it eventually, but it didn't make a very good first impression.

L'Avventura I've never seen any Antonioni, but I'm finding I really like Italian film from this period.

Contempt Never had any interest in Godard until recently.

Intolerance I guess I just haven't gotten around to it yet?

To Be or Not to Be I can see why this got a less than warm response when it first came out.

Viridiana I don't know anything about this, but the story sounds very intriguing.

Amarcord I've heard less good things about this one compared to Fellini's other work, but he hasn't failed me so far.

Notorious I thought I'd seen this, but when I looked up the info nothing seemed familiar.

Pickpocket Some more Bresson for the list.

Stagecoach Another one I'm fairly sure I've seen parts of, because my mom keeps the western channel on in the background at all times.

Aguirre: The Wrath of God Never actually seen any Herzog, so if this isn't the place to start, just pick another one of his for me.

ha ha ha!
you've already paid for this
City Of God is a churning hallucination of a movie. It dabbles in all forms and doesn't seem out of place in any one of them (some scenes have the formalism of The Godfather, some have the handheld freedom of Breathless, and some look like the Zapruder film), swirling through story after story, and sometimes story-within-a-story, closely following a narrative that zig-zags all over the place. It's breathtaking, terrifying, and absurd, splashed with color and light and bursting with vibrant activity, tilting between sexy charm and serious danger with carefree, frightening abandon. In many ways what it does isn't particularly original. A murder with a strobe light on, a casual narrator, a loopy, Matryoshka-doll plot, an event captured through a camera, etc. It's all been done before, and stylistically it's almost always mirroring something familiar, but it does it so well that it doesn't matter.

9.5/10

SHAAAAAAME

1) Howards End - I'm going to watch every Criterion Blu-Ray, dammit, no matter how boring they look.

2) The Straight Story - The only Lynch film I haven't seen.

3) The Mirror - Woop woop, Tarkovsky! I think I rented this once but didn't watch it. The clip I saw of the barn on fire on Youtube was marvelous, though.

4) Secret Honor - I love Robert Altman and I love Richard Nixon (as a subject), and I've heard endless good things about this.

5) The Wages Of Fear - This has been on my Netflix queue ever since the Blu-Ray came out, but for some reason I haven't seen it. Why? Who knows! It looks exciting, though.

6) Vivre sa vie - Replacing a new-wave with a new-wave, this is another meant-to-never-saw. Great that it's on Blu now. I think I skipped this one for A Woman Is A Woman when they were doing a Godard retrospective at SIFF.

7) Baraka - Put it on Netflix queue after seeing Koyaanisqatsi, never got it up to the top three because half of my dogged devotion to Koyetc is the Philip Glass score and the theme about industrialization. But apparently it's like mindblowingly cool or something I dunno.

8) On The Waterfront - I'm really not even sure what this is about.

9) Dial M For Murder - Well, heck, let's make this the Hitchcock spot.

10) Through A Glass Darkly - Bergman catch-up time. The first of a "trilogy" (not really). Apparently it's about some people on an island, but isn't that what every Bergman film is about? I guess this spot is reserved for more Bergmans.

I am the math man.

Magic Hate Ball, The Wages Of Fear is a great tension filled film. Some say the opening isn't as good as the rest, but I think the mood setting is exceptional and essential to the social critiques central to the film.

El Sol del membrillo is pretty cool in a couple of ways. Primarily it's about the process of creating art. Throughout the film we see Antonio López set up the preparations for a painting of a tree, begin painting and modify his approach several times. It's slow and yet after the first few minutes, once I got a handle on the pace it was mesmerizing to get a peek into this world. The contrasts with filmmaking, sometimes subtle at others very obvious, were intriguing as well. At one point, as his frustrations continue, someone mentions drawing from a photograph which I found logical yet the response made perfect sense. Still, even with all this going on the part I found most interesting was the human aspect. Antonio's discussions with his wife and family, with his old friend and with some guests, are so full interesting meditations on art and life that even while there was no aha moment the entirety of what was said was quite impacting. A great film that I'm really glad I got to watch.

American Gigolo I have some doubts as to whether I'll like this, but I just found out it's apparently influenced by Bresson's Pickpocket which I didn't expect.

Sunset Boulevard. Was very impressed with it. Better than the other Wilder picture I saw, Double Indemnity. (and I liked Double Indemnity). Gloria Swanson was very creepy as Norma Desmond. Liked how it explored the dark side of Hollywood.

Peaceful Anarchy, seems like I'm always picking movies for you, even though I've never seen any that are on your list. How about Spione?

My List:
M - Heard alot about it, but never saw it.

The Dark Knight - Would like to put something more recent on my list, and this movie is just sitting on my DVR now.

Lawrence of Arabia - I've seen this has been recommended alot. Haven't seen it yet.

Brazil

Duck Soup - Another Marx Brothers film that I'd like to see

The Princess and the Frog - I usually make sure that I watch a DVD when I buy it, but I bought this movie over a year ago and I still haven't seen it.

Rashomon - Going to stick with a Kurasawa movie here.

My Fair Lady - I'm going to stick with musicals in this spot.

Plan 9 From Outer Space - Having finally seen Ed Wood, I'd like to see one of his movies

The Public Enemy - Never saw any James Cagney film.

Movies Seen: Seven Samurai, Dune, Singin' in the Rain, Animal Crackers, Once Upon a Time in the West, Amadeus, Double Indemnity, The Day the Earth Stood Still, 12 Angry Men, Ed Wood, Sunset Boulevard

Batman is cool. Christopher Nolan is cool. The movie does not fail in delivering large quantities of cool.(It's also a great movie)

Anyway, Once Upon a Time in America was a bit disappointing. I really enjoyed the sections with the teenagers, they were more vibrant and alive, the whole section just had this great flow, everything else was just disappointing.

The gangster stuff is just done in a very lackluster way. I don't find that Leone has the same skill of Coppola to add "romance" to the gangster lifestyle(And still keep it brutal), or infuse it with slick style like Scorsese. I think Leone was trying to transform his western movies into a Gangster movie and nothing came out quite right out of those sections.

The finale was also balls. Thought that maybe was my fault, cause I completely lost track of what was happening in the 60's. But either way, it just felt flat. All of the other Leone movies have this great build up to the final confrontation, and they never disappoint,(Haven't seen the one with the Mexicans though...) this one however did. It's not that I wanted there to be a final gun duel between characters or a Scarface shootout, I was just waiting for a better build up to that moment. Maybe if the character in question was more of a presence in the 60's sections, other than a news report on the TV, it would have worked better. Or maybe not.

The teen sections were great, the score was amazing, the rest is meh. Also apparently they releasing a NEW version of the movie with 40 minutes extra, next year at Cannes. Not sure if it's going change all that much, to be honest.

P.S: Oh and the sets! The sets, the clothing and the makeup are also amazing.
My shame list:

:zombie:Infernal Affairs Scorsese remade it so it should be good.

High and Low Sounds like a Kurosawa take on Hitchcock's type of movie really.

La Dolce Vita 8 1/2 is one of my favorite movies, but I gave up watching this one the first time.

Amelie Actually I think I have seen this movie...Or maybe not.

The Wild Bunch More Westerns!

Dial M for Murder And now in 3D!

Some Like it Hot Men in drag and Marilyn Monroe. Yup.

Singin' in the Rain Time for something lighter.

Touch of Evil "I'm supposed to do a thriller for Universal. They want Charlton Heston as a Mexican."

Boogie Nights Another PT Anderson movie, involving the porn film industry apparently.

Have seen so far:Mulholland Drive, The Departed, 2001:A Space Odyssey, M, The Trial, Vertigo, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, On the Waterfront, Magnolia, Brazil, Days of Heaven, The Shining, Throne of Blood, The Searchers, La Grand Illusion, Ladri di Biciclette, Tokyo Story, À bout de souffle, Once Upon a Time in America.

The reason the childhood segments are more vibrant and alive is because the characters are more vibrant and alive at that time. "The life" hasn't caught up with them yet. The adult sections wouldn't be served by romanticizing or portraying the gangster life as full of slick style. It wants to portray it as sad, violent, simple and full of anguish, longing and decay. And that it does, in spades. The scene in which Noodles rapes Deborah perfectly encapsulates the whole film--he wants to love her, but he's so entrenched in the gangster mindset that all he knows how to do is force and take. And by the end of that scene he realizes that truth about himself, and that he can't do anything about it anymore.

I've always said that while The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is my favorite film, Once Upon a Time in America was the best film Leone ever made.

But Duck, You Sucker! is not good.

The Godfather(the two parts) also portrays a sad, violent and filled with regret life. Goodfellas also portrays a sad, violent and filled with regret life. Scarface also portrays a sad, etc etc...(The Sopranos also portrays a sad...)
Gangster movies(Especially american mob movies) are at their core very the much same. Rise and fall stories, men who can't change who they are and all that.
What makes stuff like The Godfather or Goodfellas different from the rest is that they have this certain style, a certain signature that makes them unique and gives it a new voice. Behind the heavy romanticism of The Godfather there's a brutal and tragic story, just like the one in OUATIA. I didn't feel that unique style, that signature in the gangster portions of Leone's epic.

Leone's westerns do feel unique. You have this strong impression that no one in the whole world could do a western like Leone, when you watching them. Even the one that it's a remake shot by shot feels unique.

The kid sections do feel pretty distinctive. Maybe it's because of what you said. "Life" hasn't caught up with them. I just found that part vastly superior to everything else in the movie, which in turn makes the difference between segments quite jarring.
I wasn't bored by the it, or in a state "Gods when will this be over", for a movie that lasts almost 4 hours it goes by pretty quick, but by the end of it didn't get the impression that Leone did something unique or even "new" like he did with his westerns.

Or maybe it's just something that grows on you overtime. It wouldn't be the first time.

Oldboy Definitely fun. I hate to say “quirky,” but at times it almost felt like I was watching the Amelie (aha!) of violent revenge movies. For whatever reason, even though I didn’t know much about it, I had it mixed up with Ong-Bak in my mind, so I got something really different from what I was expecting.

2. 2046- In the Mood for Love immediately became one of my all-time favorites after watching it, so I really should see this.

4. Blood Simple- I’ve seen most of the Coen brothers’ movies and I feel like I should fill in the gaps.

5. The Maltese Falcon- I don’t know anything about noir, but think it’s a genre I should like. This is just the first noir I thought of.

7. Gone with the Wind- Super classic.

8. Tokyo Story- I’ve finished college, so it’s too late for me to take Film 101. This is one of the movies a class would’ve covered, yeah?

9. Rashomon- More Japanese film. Loved Seven Samurai, underwhelmed by Ran (which I blame VHS for, everything was so fuzzy).

10. Breakfast at Tiffany’s- I asked a friend what movies I should’ve seen, and this is the first one she came up with. OK Anna!!!

11. Audition- Another friend has been bugging me to see this for a while. Aight.

12. Solaris (72)- I’ll keep going with classic sci-fi, then. I’m just a nerd at heart.

13. Ong-Bak- In which case, I guess I should watch this one.

Punch! Punch! Punch!

Revolutionaut, watch The Maltese Falcon and witness the greatness of Peter Lorre and Bogey.

Ran - This movie is not just epic, it DEFINES epic. And it's epic in all conceivable ways: the best battle scenes ever filmed (sorry Seven Samurai, but you are now #2); the intense mental degradation of a human being who has come to understand the evil life he's lived; profound philosophical questions about who deserves blame for the horrors of humanity. There's so much to chew on that it's hard to mentally conceptualize this as one single film. If a movie ever demanded repeat viewings, this is it. - 92/100

New list:

Das Boot - This is definitely one of my most shameful because I actually own the loving DVD and still have not seen it.

Downfall - I've had this one on my netflix queue for a LONG time. Not sure why I keep demoting it.

Cinema Paradiso - I know very little about this.

The Great Dictator - I began watching this on TCM a long time ago and had to stop for some reason. I liked what I saw, and I really enjoy Chaplin.

The Apartment - I've seen two Wilder films and I love them both. So I'm sure I'll like this too.

On the Waterfront - I like Marlon Brando, so I have no hesitation to see this.

Grave of the Fireflies - Another highly praised anime I have not seen.

Cool Hand Luke - Looks good. Anxious to check it out.

Witness for the Prosecution - I know nothing about this one.

It Happened One Night - Clark Gable and Frank Capra? How can I go wrong?

I wasn't expecting the sheer silliness of Sleeper, but i loved it. I loved the usual Woody Allen verbal humor with the slapstick gags. There were some great lines in it and it almost seemed like the plot was secondary to the humor and jokes. It was hysterical.

1) The Birds- can't go wrong with Hitchcock and suspense
2) The Asphalt Jungle- love those heist films
3) Metropolis- it's time I saw this
4) Battleship Potemkin- I've only seen silent comedies and it's time to expand my horizons. This seems like essential viewing
5) The Friends of Eddie Coyle- owned this for a while, but never gotten around to it
6) Pan's Labyrinth- wanted some newer stuff on here, don't know if I'll like this
7) Captain Blood- let's have some fun
8) Wings of Desire- picked this up in the latest Criterion sale because it intrigued me
9) Steamboat Bill, Jr.- so far I've liked The General the best from my Chaplin/Keaton viewings, I'm ready to see some of Keaton's other stuff
10) Shane- this is another stop on my way to the Searchers, hope I like it as much as penismightier does

1. Stagecoach – I really know nothing about Westerns. I was supposed to see this in a theater recently, but I missed my bus.
2. Aguirre, the Wrath of God – No excuse. Every time I think about watching it, something else comes up.
3. Fitzcarraldo – See above.
4. McCabe & Mrs. Miller – I have mixed feelings about Altman which has kept me away from this, but the cinematography looks great.
5. Magnificent Obsession – I keep wanting to have a weekend with Douglas Sirk, but I never know where to start. Is this a good melodrama introduction?
6. Signin’ in the Rain – I need more musicals.
7. Lawrence of Arabia – I really should get around to this one of these days.
8. The Crowd – This looks great, but was it ever released on DVD? I’ve had trouble locating it.
9. Umberto D. – I know little about Italian Neorealism, which is a shame because I think I will like it.
10. Manhattan – No reason.

Well now you must watch it, for someone on the internet told you to.

Jules and Jim was wonderful. The warm, complex relationship between the three characters was a pleasure to watch. One of the best examples of romance in cinema that I've seen. The editing and direction is outstanding, Truffaut really impressed me here. The music is terrific as well. When the movie ended, I felt a little cold. But when I think about it there are so many great moments.

1. It's a Wonderful Life - Seems like it might be too cheesy.

2. Singin' in the Rain - I guess I have to put this here after A Clockwork Orange used the title song so prominently.

3. The Asphalt Jungle - Don't have much noir under my belt. :zombie: Has been on list the longest. :zombie:

4. The Night of the Hunter - Actually had this for a week but never got around to watching it for some reason.

5. Once Upon a Time in the West - Love the Dollars trilogy, don't know why I haven't seen this yet.

6. The Thin Red Line - Never seen a Malick picture. This looks like it has a pretty great cast.

7. City of God - Going into this one fairly blind, which is rare since I somehow read the ending to every movie ever made.

8. Dial M for Murder - MURDER!

And now it's off the list!

Amelie was very fun, very upbeat, with a nice heartwarming message and unlike the last string of movies it didn't end on "Life is pointless and sad". Liked a lot the use of colour and tight editing.

Le Samouraï I hear John Woo wants to remake this. Other than that I know nothing.

Have seen so far:Mulholland Drive, The Departed, 2001:A Space Odyssey, M, The Trial, Vertigo, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, On the Waterfront, Magnolia, Brazil, Days of Heaven, The Shining, Throne of Blood, The Searchers, La Grand Illusion, Ladri di Biciclette, Tokyo Story, À bout de souffle, Once Upon a Time in America, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain.

Tokyo Story was not as horribly depressing as I had been led to believe. Most of the shots were wonderfully framed, but the slow pace made me feel the runtime. I really liked the mannerisms of the father. 3.5/5

Only one on your list that I've seen, though I didn't love it.

The Asphalt Jungle - Great heist film, though without the great romance or unique twist that makes other classic noirs I've seen essential viewing. Also, Sterling Hayden is stiff as a loving board.

1. It's a Wonderful Life - Seems like it might be too cheesy.

2. Singin' in the Rain - I guess I have to put this here after A Clockwork Orange used the title song so prominently.

3. The Asphalt Jungle The Maltese Falcon - Another classic noir, haven't seen Bogart since Casablanca.

9. The Sting - Sounds fun. :zombie: Has been on list the longest. :zombie:

I am the math man.

Atheistdeals.com, M is my favourite Lang film, check it out.

Spione rules, it's even better than Dr. Mabuse. A fantastic spy thriller full of intrigue, romance, and crazy elaborate poo poo happening. Several reviews on Criticker call this convoluted, and it is, but I never found it hard to follow. It all fits together quite well and the ending is great. Good times.

Subarnarekha I've seen one Ghatak film, it was magnificent. Don't know why I haven't gotten around to this one or any others.

American Gigolo I have some doubts as to whether I'll like this, but I just found out it's apparently influenced by Bresson's Pickpocket which I didn't expect.

Salt of the Earth Apparently this is a heavy handed pro union film based on a mining strike, made by people blacklisted in the 50s. Sounds like good times.

My 9th recommendation to you of a film I haven't seen. Someday, somewhere, somehow I'll recommend you a movie that I've seen.

The Grapes of Wrath - The story kept me interested and it felt very authentic. I thought it was going to be more topical on the depression/dustbowl but it focused more on the characters and their struggles and Tom's continuing knack for getting himself into trouble.

'The novel's original ending was far too controversial to be even considered for a film in 1940. It involved Rose-of-Sharon Rivers (Dorris Bowdon) giving birth to a stillborn baby and then offering her milk-filled breasts to a starving man, dying in a barn.'
:stare:

IMDb list:

#129 Witness for the Prosecution - I've liked every Billy Wilder movie thus far. I don't know anything about this. (added 1/7/11)

#146 Into the Wild - Seen it mentioned in the thread a few times. (added 1/29/11)

#149 Notorious - Another short adjective/noun Hitchcock film I know nothing about. (added 2/10/11)

#151 Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans - First Oscar best picture winner IIRC. (added 2/10/11)

#155 The Gold Rush - Another famous Chaplin movie I've heard about. (added 3/5/11)

#161 The Big Sleep - Another I've seen mentioned but know very little about it. 4/2/11

#162 The Manchurian Candidate - Haven't seen this or the remake. I remember Ebert citing this a few times on TV. Something about political brainwashing. 4/2/11

#165 Life of Brian - IIRC a friend told me that there is a funny dinner scene in this. 4/2/11

#166 Finding Nemo - Saw a little of this on TV and it seemed to be decent. 4/2/11

NEW The Bourne Identity - Technically not on the top 250 but I need to watch this before The Bourne Ultimatum (which is currently #168). 4/7/11

A fine Hitchcock thriller, with typically great lead actors. Enjoy.

The Insider made a good impression on me. The scenes at CBS felt like a more dramatized version of All the President's Men. Al Pacino's impassioned speeches about investigative journalism and corporate influence were strong. Wigand's personal life was filled with emotion, lent even more weight by a soundtrack from the woman whose mournful vocals were also used effectively in Gladiator. The movie had an adept style of using close-ups, and remarkable composition at times.

A friend of mine loves this, I felt a bit cooler towards it. Interested to see what you think!

The Maltese Falcon- What a cast of characters! I was really stuck on Peter Lorre’s performance in Casablanca, so it was great to see him in a longer performance. Humphrey Bogart was amazing, and in fact almost the whole cast really impressed me. I loved how the movie spent the first ten minutes subverting my expectations for the plot and how excellently paced it was. Can anyone recommend more noir or a good resource for exploring the genre?

2. 2046- In the Mood for Love immediately became one of my all-time favorites after watching it, so I really should see this.

4. Blood Simple- I’ve seen most of the Coen brothers’ movies and I feel like I should fill in the gaps.

13. Ong-Bak- After mixing this up with Oldboy, I guess I should watch this one too.

14. Who Framed Roger Rabbit?- I have really vague memories of this, so I think I saw part of it when I was young, but it’s one of those everyone is always mentioning and I just don't know what they're talking about.

Did Done Watched: Casablanca 9/10; 2001: A Space Oddysey 10/10; Oldboy 8/10; The Maltese Falcon 9/10

Finally finished 8 1/2. It was okay. I didn't find anything spectacular about it, but it was interesting. I enjoyed the dream sequences, as they really told you what kind of man Guido was. I don't know that I "get" Fellini, but I certainly didn't come away empty handed.

Here's my updated list:

1. Barton Fink - I'm actually a pretty big fan of the Coen Brothers so how this got away from me, I don't know.

2. The Usual Suspects. I've never seen this movie, but I do know how it ends, and since it's one of those that the ending is a surprise, I feel that watching the movie would be moot.

3. Dancer in the Dark. Have no clue what this is about other than it has Bjork in it. I figure it was nominated for a reason and I should see it.

4. The Seventh Seal. Have not one clue what this movie is about, who's in it, or who directs it, but it keeps popping up in everyone elses lists and the reviews people come back with are good, so I'm adding it.

5. The Deer Hunter. Don't know a lot about this one, just that it has a young Christopher Walken in it and there is an intense Russian roulette scene. But I hear it's good, so I'm adding it to the list.

6. The Kite Runner. I've heard nothing but amazement over this movie, but I really don't like the Middle East wars and I think this would just make me unable to appreciate the movie? I hope I'm wrong.

7. Lawrence of Arabia. Never even really heard much about this movie. I know it's a classic, but up until this thread, I never thought it was something I had to see. Here's hoping it's as good as everyone says it is and worth the time to watch it.

8. Grosse Point Blank This movie I've tried to watch, but always got distracted. I have a feeling it's going to be hard to keep concentrating on, but I want to finish it. Plus, I like John Cussack.

9. Rabbit Proof Fence. My dad has been trying to get me to see this one since he saw it, saying it's fantastic. Just never got around to it.

10. It Happened One Night. Heard it's a very good early romantic comedy? Also, I've only ever seen Mr. Gable in Gone With the Wind, so it would be nice to have more exposure to his other movies.

Finished movies: Die Hard; Dr. Strangelove.; Chinatown; Citizen Kane; There Will Be Blood; Do The Right Thing; The Graduate; Rocky; The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; A Streetcar Named Desire; Apocalypse Now; Children of a Lesser God; City of God; The Pianist; The Red Shoes; Eraserhead; Vertigo; Raging Bull; 2001: A Space Odyssey; Tombstone; Seven Samurai; 8 1/2

Bodnoirbabe, Bjork is great in Dancer in the Dark

The Piano Teacher kept getting crazier and crazier throughout the runtime. Isabella Huppert gave an interesting performance as the titular character, a university professor who's sexual repression lets itself out in wild ways. I would have liked to see some of her past in flashbacks as (so I've heard) there was in the novel. This was easier to grasp than most of Haneke's other work, although still quite difficult to stomach some scenes. 3.5/5
