The part where the mirror just goes is just the saddest thing. That little pile on the flatbed at the end was hilarious.

Well I was splitting lanes through some city traffic and was coming up on an intersection when a light blue Lexus RX330 in the right lane decided to try to change lanes into the left lane right in front of me without any turn signal on, in my surprised I grabbed a bit too much front brake, felt the front end start to shake, then slide out under me and to the left, ended up swiping a yellow taxi and then the bike ended up on it's left side. Fortunately i'm ok with no injuries, was wearing gear and boots, didn't hit my head. Wasn't going particularly fast when it happened, maybe about 20 mph when the Lexus made it's move. The Lexus that cut me off apparently didn't stay, so I exchanged information with the Taxi cab driver, I gave him a decent dent and some scratches on his rear right side door from my handlebar. Besides having a broken windshield and the mirror snapping off, my GS500 was ok and I rode it home. Already filed a claim with Progressive which was pretty easy, i'll likely end up with fault but it was pretty minor overall, could have been worse as they say. Some pesky little scooter that was following me pretty close didn't even stop after it happened, just kept going ! Jerks. What sucks is that I was on my way to class.... when I got to class... found out the class was canceled because the instructor was sick broken mirror and windshield little scuff on my boots, thank god for shin protection! small tear in my Cortech armored jeans, theres still material underneath and my knee pads.

Crayvex posted:I have attachments for knee pucks but I've never bought any. Do people really use them on the street? (Mind you I'm a pussy on my sport bike) When you want to play around, absolutely. For real fast riding? Nah, I tend to sit more upright for better sight lines when I'm riding hard on the street. The track is where you learn to drag knee, you can whip it out on the street for giggles, but it doesn't have a functional purpose on the street unless you're riding too quick or hanging off like a monkey to get a knee down.

I don't even know how people get a knee down on the street, but I ride a standard and I'm tall so that might have something to do with it. I probably have a half inch of chicken strip on my rear tire and I'm fine with that, I'm already zipping thru some fun tight turns too fast, and if I lowside into most of them there's plenty of hard stuff to run into. Honestly though, you'd have to have some big balls or just be dumb at some parts, because tight turns that are high visibility and a recommended 25mph I've hit at 55 and not been close to a knee on the ground, and I still have the aforementioned .5 in of chicken strip in the back.

See avatar, but getting a knee doesn't have poo poo to do with cornerspeed, it's 95% body positioning and 5% cornerspeed. Being taller makes it easier because your knees stick out father.

Interesting, perhaps next time I go out I'll try to hang off more monkey like. I tend to just slide over and keep one cheek on or so, except sometimes on a corner exit when I'm giving it gas and doing "The Pedrosa" so to speak.

Welp I couldn't be more pleased with my first submission to this thread. I'm riding away from a Rizoma Distributors company after purchasing some brand new mirrors for my Street Triple R, and this van decides he's going to pull out in front of me. "Well shi...oh wait"...the van decides oh never mind I'm gunna pull all the way over into the turn la....oh wait...just kidding, I need to make a right hand turn up here so I'll pull back into this motorcyclists lane without checking. I didn't take a clue at first and was comin up too fast, so I locked up the rear brake. Well thank you very much motor safety course, I instinctively kept that bitch locked up to avoid high siding. Back end starts to wash out, and as I come to a stop I kinda fall / stumble off the bike to right side. Thankfully I think adrenaline allowed me to catch the bike, and somehow turn the engine off? Literally no damage at all to the bike or my gear. If I didn't have bendy turn signals I might be replacing one of those, but otherwise still 100%. Somehow I hurt the poo poo out of my right ring finger though...oh well, I'll take it.

Theres no aftermarket frame sliders for the GS500F, at least without doing some considerable modifications, apparently a brand new fairing would be about 200$ with the stickers and all, not cheap but not hugely expensive either. I'm scouting ebay regularly for a matching one that may pop up eventually. I finished reporting the incident to Progressive, they were pretty nice and cool and straight forward about it on the phone, The agent said it's unfortunate the Lexus that cut me off didn't stop and I never got the info like at least the license plate # off it. I'm pretty much at fault for the taxi...bad place at a bad time, hopefully my rates wont go up too much when I renew my policy. I'm glad i'm ok too! Too bad I didn't crash the bike horribly enough to replace it with a GSX-R 1000..yet. Actually the fairing isn't horribly bad looking, and a new oem windscreen is about 25$, and i've reglued the broken mirror and reattached it, looks and works fine! I'm going to do a slightly more thorough inspection before I start riding it daily again. It's one of the few times i've really locked up the front and had the forks bottom out as hard as they did in the accident.

I just couldn't quite work out if you meant that you managed to save it or if it went all the way over (hence the turn signals).

Wait a minute, they teach you to lock up the rear brake in a panic situation? That's terrible, I thought you were about to say "had ta layer down" after reading that. I've said it before but I rarely use the back brake, and in that situation, even touching it is a terrible idea. What you should have done is squeezed a handful of front brake and threshold braked as quick as you could while being ready to ease off if an opportunity to swerve was there.

It's not that you're specifically supposed to use the back brake, but if you do and you lock it up you're better off keeping the fucker locked till you're stopped. Lessens chances of the rear suddenly regaining traction when you release it... when the rear end end of the bike may not be in line with the front.

KozmoNaut posted:I was told during rider training to release the rear brake immediately if it locks up to stop the bike going sideways. Here's what the MSF handbook says quote:Rear-tire skids can occur in quick stops or rapid speed reductions because the weight of the motorcycle and rider is transferred away from the rear wheel and to the front. This reduces the traction available to the rear tire and, consequently, the amount of brake pressure required to lock the wheel. When a rear tire skids, the ability to turn is lost.

They told us to focus as beginners on just keeping the rear locked, even though once we become skilled enough that won't always be the case. For now though, we're more likely to gently caress it up and cause a high-side so it's not worth the risk.

I gotta try that, as hanging off like a monkey I just drag my pegs before I get a knee down. I'm not really trying to though, as I'm already going about as fast as I want to anyways. I kinda use my foot as an angle gauge though, even though my pegs are foldable I know I'll somehow lift my rear doing this.
