If EA do sign up, then the best thing that can happen is GOG going over the games that have trouble working on modern systems, and trying to figure out ways to make them behave. Dungeon Keeper 2, Syndicate Wars, the latter Lands of Lore games, etc.

Pretty much everything else - Magic Carpet, Crusader 1 & 2, etc - works fine in DOSBox.

I got DK2 working perfectly in Windows 7 with the unofficial 1.73 patch.

But yeah, it would be nice not to have to gently caress around like that. Having Westwood games set up by default with network support without having to mess with the IPX patched would be boss.

Wanna bypass the Red Alert 2 installer too.

The Command & Conquer installations were the best thing in the world... until you've installed them for the 10th time. I wouldn't object to playing some Renegade again. I think some dudes were making a remake in CryEngine 2 or something.

I have a huge backlog, too (buying Realms increased it because I tend to clump GoG purchases together so Realms, Last Express, Zork Nemesis and M&M7 got bought at the same time), but even with the age Realms is compelling enough to start now. Once you get past the now-goofy interface it's really good, and I'm playing it in a pretty small window due to the laptop I'm using not scaling resolution.

Also, if you've just started realms, a few tips:

- Lclick on green vials and then Rclick on the same vial to use it (gives health).
- Try not to play it like a modern WASD shooter. If you click on an enemy you shoot at them, regardless if you're pointed right at them (like in almost every FPS). The game really isn't designed around notions like side-stepping and heavy use of the vertical plane so playing like you're driving a tank works better than you'd think, particularly given the way mouselook works.
- I think as mentioned earlier by DW, turn on easy mode for puzzles. I don't recall the object-use puzzles being overly difficult and it'll save you the annoyance of going into the inventory. I'm not sure if this will have an effect on the endgame puzzles.
- If you don't read the manual (I don't blame you these days) you'll miss a couple things, like how the weapons placed in the top 5 spots of the weapon tab are assigned 2-6 on the keyboard.
- Save often.

EA let Sold-Out Software republish Alpha-Centauri, they must have some major loving disconnect in their collective if they won't jump on the digital distribution bandwagon.

Yeah, the only thing Easy mode changes is that it automatically uses the correct item from you inventory when you click on a puzzle target, so if you use a locked door, it'll pick the right key out for you. This is good, as the inventory is pretty crappy, and having to manually dig through it, put the right key in your hand and use it from there would be a pain.

As for combat, once you remap controls (I've got it set to WSAD for forward, backwards and turning, and Q and E for strafe) it becomes a LOT easier to manage combat. This is especially useful later on, as some of the enemies that start appearing around chapter 10 (I think there's 20?) do need a fair bit of agility and accuracy to deal with.

To deviate from the speculation and inevitable disappointment, does anyone know how to get Dwiggs to work with Age of Wonders Shadow Magic? I downloaded Dwiggs 5.0, patched it up to 1.4 using the unofficial patch, and then installed Dwiggs on top of that. Now my game won't work, and I have to uninstall/reinstall it all to get it back to 1.4.

I set it to use Custom Resources > Dwiggs in the Config menu. Should I have downloaded Dwiggs 1.4 or something?

Dominic White

Erm, if I remember rightly, Dwiggs 5.0 is meant to be installed on top of just the regular vanilla game + 1.4 unofficial patch.

Tried that, the game just won't start up afterwards. It gives a runtime error 217 that I can't find reference specific to AOWSM or Dwiggs.

Makes me sad, because I tried DK2 back when I had a computer that would actually run it, hated it because all I tried was the gimmicky campaign mode, and only found out about My Pet Dungeon mode after it would no longer run.

Long story short, by buying fake citizenship papers outside Vault City and getting caught I've managed to lock myself out of that place and all quests related to it, since everybody hates me now... Fairly easy to get those off abandonware sites. I've even found a great one that pre-packs games for easy installation and DOSbox use like GoG do. And if GoG offer anything for sale, they link to them instead. When GoG offered RoTH for sale, this site pulled the ISOs, but offered an 'easy install' package for those with the original discs. Now that's dedication to classic old games.

Not sure if it's entirely safe to link though.

Anyway, yeah, I'd love GOG to turn their attention to games that are either hard to find, or hard to run on modern PCs. They did an amazing job with Outcast, so I'd like to see them continue to do what nobody else can.

I'm pretty sure it's safe to link that, email slowbeef to be sure though.

Why would EA go with GoG over setting up their own classics distro for their back catalogue? It would be great obviously but I can't see the logic, beyond EA wanting to instantly improve their licensing image a hundred fold. Not to mention so many of those games needing proper work to get running on modern OSs, the likes of which not even actual devs who worked on the games have managed in some cases. All that kind of stuff would point to it being an in-house affair, if it ever happened.

We should live in hope rather than expectation on this announcement. I think they're building it up a bit too much.

Because GOG have specialists on-board who get stuff with compatibility issues working on newer systems. You look at Steam, and the retro releases there, and you can see what happens when you don't have professionals at work. Really janky-rear end setups that barely function sometimes.

This is true, but surely Steam is more about getting games for sale 'as is', and you go into it well knowing that's the function it provides.

It's not as though EA don't have the money to hire people if they wanted to do it on their own. I think both scenarios require equal amounts of willpower on their part, so they're equally likely or unlikely. EA catalogue on GoG: dream scenario for political/cultural reasons, but it's all about the games, just getting them out there somewhere would be good starter.

You know, I could really see it being Square-Enix/Eidos. S-E's been barfing up a bunch of their PS1 classics in a row on the PS3 lately, with everyone speculating that part of the reason is a rather spectacular underperformance from their new titles last year and thus a need for a sizable and fairly quick & easy cash injection.

The Taito Legends compilations would fit the library nicely :)

Just checked with Slowbeef (he's not a local mod (perhaps I checked with the wrong one? Ah well, no biggie), but I guess there's no problem), so I'll drop this here.

For games that can be dragged out of the flaming pit that is Licensing Hell, there's GOG. For everything else, there's DJ OldGames. A Slovakian (!) site that has clearly patterned itself on GOG, offering the vast majority of its games (everything with the little DJ Oldgames logo by it) as pre-packed easy installations with DOSBox configured and optimized right off the bat.

They also have a ton of CD-era stuff. Many if the bigger downloads require premium access to get to, though, which can either be earned by contributing (writing a review will get you access for the better part of a week) or donating (2.40€ will get you a full week). Might be a little bit questionable, but I'd imagine that their bandwidth costs are significantly higher than average for an abandonware site.

As mentioned, as soon as GOG, DotEmu or any other reasonably accessible source offers a game for download, they immediately replace any of their download links with one to the appropriate store. It's a neat site. Well worth a poke around. And for anyone who hasn't got it already: Just grab Albion. Now. It's a hugely underexposed RPG classic.

If any of of the other mods don't approve (doubt they would though), just go ahead and delete the link.

How is Albion in english? I remember it being one of the finest sci-fi settings of all time, and thinking of it now - it really is what Avatar should have been. It has a believable alien species with a culture that makes sense (and it's just human culture with a gimmick), their own language and while they'll appeal to furries kids like those blue dudes they're not a sunday school special in terms of "moral lesson".

I've noticed the occasional typo, but aside from that, it reads fine in english.

And I agree - the Iskai are what the Na'vi should have been. Just weird and alien enough to feel like a proper alien race, but unlike James Cameron's Dances With Smurfs, they don't play up the whole 'noble savage' thing.

My only real gripe with the game is that, as with many older RPGs, the start can be brutally hard. I'm not sure whether Cheat Engine will play nice with DOSBox, but I'd honestly recommend that they cheat themselves to 400-500 gold to start out with. That'll buy you enough equipment and potions to get you past that first dungeon.

Yeah the start is rough, and you can easily gimp yourself by using up your pistol ammo on enemies that you could have beaten with native weaponry.

On GoG, if it's Wing Commander (as awesome as that would be) I'd be more excited about the whole "They got EA!" thing.
