Any network engineers around? The stock nook color can connect to the AP just fine but not with CyanogenMod? I've posted on the forums and no one is sure, and I can't change it from WPA 2 + TKIP.

I'd guess there's a bug in the Linux 2.6.35 (GB) 802.11 stack that isn't present in 2.6.32 (Froyo). This sort of thing happens on occasion, it's often rather difficult to debug. For example, my Intel 4965 card won't associate with a Netgear AP in 2.6.37, but will in 2.6.32 & 2.6.38.

Which router is it?

It's likely either the router is throwing out the frame and not "seeing" the DHCP_DISCOVER, or the router is replying, but the nook is throwing out the response frame. You would either need router logs, or a third device to sniff the wifi traffic in order to differentiate.

About going back to a Sense ROM have you tried any of Myn's ROMs? I was a big fan of Warm 2.2 RC 5 and Warm Z. Warm Z runs Sense 2.0, but it doesn't have 4G and still has a couple of bugs. Warm 2.2 runs a lot better. Also I saw yesterday on XDA someone has a Gingerbread ROM with Sense.

Im using WarmZ right now and I like it alot, but Warm 2.2 is better? this is interesting and good news. I might flash over to it instead.

Any advice or any better ways to root?

I am not sure if better is the right word. First WarmZ is newer and runs Sense 2.0, so it has more bugs right now (at least when I used it). Also you can never have 4G with WarmZ. That said I was pretty happy with both, but I got bored and started to try different ROMs (I think we all do this).

Right now I am running CM7 RC4 with the Clear as Day theme and it is perfection for me in terms of looks. I had to stop using the nightly builds of RC4 (it only works for the last stable build of RC4) because of this match-up. I am to the point I will upgrade as the theme upgrades. I am glad I finally left Sense behind. Now if I can just get better battery life it will be complete perfection.

Does anybody running CM7 have a problem where sometimes setting screens do not appear, even though they are open? Or sometimes presses on checkboxes don't appear to show up even though they are registered by the app (happens to me mostly in Latitude)?

I'm on rc4 now, but this has happened to me on every build since the early nightlies. It seems to only happen after the device has been running for a while, and a reboot clears it right up, which makes me think it's memory related somehow.

Apks will have a seperate file called *.odex. I can't explain this very technically, but in order to theme certain elements, like text color, the framework odex needs to be put inside the apk, and for that to work, all of the apks need to be de-odexed. I think its more efficient that way too

I've seen a potentially similar issue, where the UI in general gets stuck. Certain apps won't draw some activities, but they respond to input. I can type in some text boxes, but the text doesn't appear. Stuff like that. CM7 RC4, EVO.

A reboot fixes it of course, and it seems to build back up over time.

Something similar happens to me too. I'll be adjusting a settings in a menu and I'll use trackball notifications as an example. When I go to try to set the color, the screen dims, indicating there's a pop up waiting for my response that would normally be there. However it doesn't appear and a reboot typically fixes the issue.

Normal packages (.apks) contains a "classes.dex" file, which is all the Davlik bytecode (program code) for the package.

Phones can't run this compressed "classes.dex" code as-is. Instead, when the package is installed, the Dalvik VM is run to produce an optimized version of the bytecode, which is then stored uncompressed in /data/dalvik-cache. This optimized bytecode (an odex file) depends on the odex for any framework packages it uses. So anytime you update a framework package (ROM upgrade, installing new theme, etc.) the dependent cached bytecode is regenerated from their original classes.dex files. This is why phones take a while to boot the first time after a ROM upgrade.

Now, most phones are shipped with "odexed" ROMs, where the /system frameworks (.jars) and applications (.apks) are pre-optimized. Each framework/app has the "classes.dex" file removed from the jar/apk, and a corresponding odex file is installed alongside. This saves overall space, since /system framework/apps odex files are used directly, and don't need to be cached in /data. It also means the phone will boot slightly faster the first time after a ROM upgrade, since the odexes for those files don't need to be generated.

The problem is that this makes modifying system app/frameworks difficult, but not impossible. If the modifications involve changing framework bytecode, any of the dependent odexes need to be regenerated. Worse, dependent /system apps can't be regenerated because the original classes.dex file doesn't exist! This leads to the phone failing to boot.

The solution is to deodex the ROM. This involves pulling all the odex files off the phone's /system partition, running baksmali to deodex & disassemble them, running smali to assemble into a new classes.dex file, shoving that file into the corresponding framework/app jar/apk, and pushing that jar/apk back to /system. Since the original odex files are no longer needed, they're removed. Upon reboot, the phone will generate the appropriate odexes and store them in /data/dalvik-cache. Subsequent modifications to framework packages will automatically regenerate the cached odexes, and everything is happy.

Another advantage to deodexing, in addition to greatly simplifying framework modifications, is that the classes.dex file is compressed when stored in the apk/jars, so this frees up space on /system. The disadvantage is that more space is used in /data due to having to cache the bytecode, leading to more overall space consumption. But for most people, /system space is more of a concern than /data.

In terms of phone performance, odexed vs deodexed ROMs don't matter. A deodexed ROM will take longer to boot initially due to having to cache more bytecode, but that's it.

Another newbie question, I was browing the Thunderbolt XDA forums (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=943) and found a whole lot of ROMs and Kernels (what's the difference?) and I don't know how to decide which one to try. I've already rooted my Thunderbolt. With ROM Manager, is it easy to switch between ROMs to try them out?

Edit: I see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027706 but I still don't have a good sense of the differences.

Is there any reason my phone would become unrooted? I have an HTC Thunderbolt, rooted it about a week ago.

Tried downloading titanium backup just a few minutes ago, and it couldn't access root. I have superuser and everything loaded up, and was it seemed to be working fine. Messed around with a few root only apps and they were working fine.

Downloaded a couple more apps, and now for some reason, none of my SU apps seem to get access at all.

Do I need to just root again? Scared now about that since I don't want to gently caress up my phone or brick it.

Ugh. Despite fooling around with it a few months ago, my OG Moto Droid is sitting unrooted on 2.2.2. I've been trying for the past hour to get SuperOneClick to work to no avail. I'm on a Mac, installed mono (and the Android SDK for good measure), trying to run SuperOneClick v1.7. Here's my process:

1. Plug phone into USB port on computer, enable USB debugging on phone.
2. Start up Terminal, navigate to SuperOneClick folder
3. Type 'mono SuperOneClick.exe'
4. The SuperOneClick window opens up, I click 'Root'.
Then... nothing happens. Here's the log from the SuperOneClick window:
code:
SuperOneClick v1.7.0.0
Killing ADB Server...
OK
Starting ADB Server...
OK
Waiting for device...
OK
Pushing psneuter...
OK
chmod psneuter...
OK
Running psneuter...
FAILED
I've also tried the rageagainstthecage exploit option but it fails at the exact same step. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, and there must be some painfully minute number of other Mac users rooting their Android phones since Google is turning up almost nothing. Does anyone have any advice? Any steps I'm missing? I'm on the verge of just bugging a Windows-using friend to let me use their computer.

This is a very silly question, but: I recently rooted my Inspire (mainly to remove bloatware) but am still running stock 2.2 w/ Sense UI. If an OTA 2.3 update comes out, can I install it? Or do I need to wait for someone to upload a flashable version of the stock 2.3 w/ new Sense UI ROM?

It would be best to wait instead of installing the OTA. Don't worry about it too much though. A rooted version of an OTA is usually out within hours of the OTA's original release.

I just got my GTab the other day, and have been looking around for a good build. I'm currently running VEGAn-Tab Beta 5.1.1 Froyo, which works well for me, using VEGAn's tablet launcher, which is beautiful. I tried VEGAn Ginger Edition Experimental and liked how it was designed for landscape tablets with the unlock and such, but couldn't get the market working reliably despite several fix attempts, so I restored to 5.1.1.

Edit: I'm looking at this thread talking about CM7 tt.RC2, is that what you're referring to, so I know I'm not barking up the wrong tree? When I go to Cyanogenmod's website I see that it lists GTablet now as a supported device, but it doesn't show any builds on the mirror network.

Edit2: Answered my own question reading that XDA thread further. For everyone else: it's listed under the codename, harmony, which isn't linked to by the front page. Gonna flash nightly 37 and see how it goes.

I wish you wouldn't have said this as I tried Clear as Day and love it.

However, it kept on rebooting my phone. What is the best way to install a theme? I couldn't use boot manager. Do you need to clear the cache before you flash it?

That's a side effect of the marijuana poisoning.
I'm running ginger villain a cm gb variant and my gps does not work at all now, the gps icon doesn't even show up in the status bar, is there any way to get it back other than switching roms?

Really digging CyanogenMod, I've been jealous and curious because I own a Fascinate and don't get to play with the fun toys.

Am I correct that to flash new nightlies I just flash them without doing a full data/cache wipe?

Are you running it on the Fascinate? The only port I saw for the Fascinate had a ton of stuff broken.

All I did was flash it in recovery mode. Honestly all I did before flashing it was do back-up. I didn't clear anything.

Also if you are using the RC4 version you can't be on any of the nightly's. I had to go restore back to the stable build of RC4 to get it to work right.

Nice. Please LG, let this phone not be hosed up.

The community is in desperate need of (non-Google) devices that don't suck and can be hacked to hell. If yours suffice, you'll have a legion of folks religiously recommending and purchasing your phones for years to come.

drat, I ordered an Incredible to get the 1-year contract and I'm already starting to second guess myself because of the G2x. I really hope CyanogenMod shows up on it sooner rather than later.

And you thought they were cute and cuddly.

Updated my Gtab from Nightly 37 to 38 and things seem to be a lot smoother and faster now.

Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.
So I've been lurking for about a week now. I'm sick of my Samsung Moment, and I've been learning how to root it. However, I'm not sure if I've done it correctly.

I found that I can achieve root by flashing a custom kernel using Sprint's upgrade program, so I tried to Flash Zefie's custom kernel....but I kept running into issues either with Windows, or with the device just not booting up after flashing. I can flash it with my stock(using a modified one from SDX), but I'm not sure if I've rooted it right.

However, I've been able to install MomentFlash and the shake-to-screenshot app, so I'm not exactly sure what's going on.

If anyone has any advice on rooting this device(other than get a better phone, trust me, I know), I'd love to know.

Thanks!

EDIT: nevermind! I finally got it to work with Radioactive Froyo. Now time to explore!

Do you see this? This means "Have a nice day".
I'm tempted to go for CM7 final, but the nightly I'm using (~2-3 weeks ago) is solid as a rock, and I don't want to bother backing up and restoring all my apps. It's a hard case to make.
