Marx posted:This poo poo sucks, I mean, the understanding has to come some time that you get what you pay for? Seriously. My partner today was someone who is involved in union stuff and knew a bit about it. It's actually more complicated than I thought. They are actually slowly doing the same process for lots of city jobs, with the goal being making it more like private industry, where people can actually be fired for incompetence. Depending on the way things go it may actually not be terrible, but that's me putting a lot of faith into it, which is obviously naive.

This is our current "upgrade" spec boots. I have had these for like 4 months now with no issues. I will more than likely get another pair in a few months. http://www.thefirestore.com/store/product.cfm/pid_6421_globe_footgear_supreme_14_structural_fire_boot_pull_on_nfpa/ Dude your feet will thank you so much. Last shift got out of the shower and had to put boot on without socks! In our rubber boots that would have destroyed my feet. I spent the next 2 hours with comfortable feet. Story time! We mostly wear shorts as duty uniform. We had multiple tornadoes touch down. So basically I spent the next 14 hours walking and working in destroyed buildings and deep water. We did everything from searching collapse zones to large area building clearings. Everyone with rubber boots feet were destroyed. Rub marks on my legs were huge and painful. IMHO boots, gloves and a good hood are the best investments you can make. Hands down best fire gloves made at the moment. No liner to pull, actual being able to use your hands when wet, and does not get hard after drying. http://www.prweb.com/releases/prweb3446174.htm Get a longer hood than normal. Trust me neck burns suck rear end. DO NOT GET THAT PRETTY LEATHER HELMET until you get this stuff. Get stuff to make your job easier.

Leathers are great, but DO NOT WEAR THEM AT FUEL SPILLS OR WIRES DOWN CALLS! This can't be stressed enough, I think. I kept my rubbers nearby for those calls.

Well, took a "firefighter-specific" civil service test for a DFW-area FD this weekend. Some of the questions were pretty . Things like Choose both the best AND worst answer: "Fireman Steve is making inappropriate jokes about a victim during an EMS call in front of the victims family. Do you: A.Say nothing, but tell your captain then request a station transfer B.Yell at Steve C.Explain to the family that this is how firefighters deal with stress D.Join in, for camaraderie." A lot of the questions like that had "socially correct" answers and "by-the-book correct" answers. Oh well, we'll see how I did in about a week.

There were multiple "correct" answers, but it's basically impossible to determine which one is the most correct without more context. I'm scared that I screwed it up due to overthinking also. Oh well, we'll see. e:Also the last ~60 questions were all personality-quiz stuff, like "Would you describe yourself as a self starter?" Were any of those choices a "best answer"? They were all terrible choices. Where's the "Politely tell Steve to be quiet, and apologize profusely on behalf of the department to the family" choice?

Well, test results came in. I was ~65 out of 460 . They only let the top 50 take the agility test, but use the rest of the list for hiring for a year. So maybe there's still hope. (I did a little better than I was expecting, to be honest.)

Agonizing over list position isn't going to get you anywhere, just keep searching for jobs and trying to do things that will improve your outlook. Also people wash out for lots of different reasons, so they could easily go through the first 50 candidates faster than you think.

Remember that all those people have to pass physical agility, interviews, polys, background checks, psych tests, etc. Those can weed a lot of people out.

E/N POST AHEAD You know, today has been a pretty lovely day all around. Work sucked pretty bad, then the fire meeting today pissed me off pretty bad due to some stupid fire station politics. Got home, was going over the day and how upset I was about what had happened. Then we got toned out for a fire, and suddenly everything's cool now. I absolutely love this job. But it got me thinking about WHY we do it. I realize everyone has different reasons for being in the fire service, and I'd really like to get a discussion going about why we spend out free time volunteering to fight fires, or why people decided to go paid. For me, it's honestly the feeling of helping people. I really, absolutely enjoy that. Then there's always the huge adrenaline rush of running into a burning structure fire, etc etc. I feel like a lot of people in my department do it just to be able to say "YUP IM A FARFAGHTER" or whatever, but I really hope that it's an exception to the rule. That's not to say that I don't love the adrenaline, or the experience itself, because I absolutely do. SO. Why do you guys do it? Do you think that peoples motivation and reasons as to WHY they do it play any part into how good of a firefighter they are? Do the "yep im a firefighter look at all of my bumper stickers and sweet VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER SHIRTS" go against the ideals of the fire service? Maybe this is a dumb post, but I'd love to hear other peoples opinions on the matter.
