So, uh, the guy tells me that it the bike had all carbs completely rebuilt and syncd by a well known Honda performance shop in town. The bike has also been completely gone over by them and in great overall condition. Other than the $$$ and the wife probably killing divorcing me, what is the consensus on CBXs in general?

Basically this is my consensus:

Since the carbs are good for a while, which is the worst part of the bike, it sounds totally worth it.

Well, that was fast. The guys friend with the CBX for sale never even gave me a sniff, he sent me an email that said "take a look at my ad" and as soon as I found it he put a SOLD in it. Must have sold it within an hour going by the email time stamp.

You don't need to explain the purchase of a CBX as it is one of the few devices available to the married man capable of entirely drowning out the shrewing of an irate wife.

That's a pretty good deal. I paid close to that for an 05 SV650S with 12,000 miles, a full aftermarket exhaust system, Power Commander 3 and brand new tires. I don't think it would be unreasonable to offer $3200 or $3300...

If I can give you one piece of advice it would be to follow your heart when buying a bike. If the SV feels right, go for it. A bike should make you smile every time you look at it and go for a ride.

I'm a unique snowflake, just like everyone else.
I've been watching sv650 locally(DC) for about 4 months. From what I've seen I would expect a 2005 to be 3000-3500. For 2500 I could find a 2002 or 2003, so I would think that price for a 99 would be high.

My XS750 is in need of some work that I wouldnt mind passively doing over the summer and next winter but I need something to ride and I've been looking for something that I could take to show as well. I saw a ton of street tracker bikes out in Tokyo and fell in love with them. If I can talk this guy down I think I'm using my tax return on this thing.

I've been literally cruising craigslist non-stop over the past few months. Unfortunately it seems like SV650's here are just creeping up in price bit by bit. I'm afraid gas prices are going to start driving things up above the "still possible to convince the woman it's a good idea" range as everyone thinks their 1992 CBR is worth 4,500.

Depends on the weight of the rider and the gearing. I had no problem at 65-75mph on my TW with different sprockets, but it won't have much more to give. There is a certain pleasure to a motorcycle where 50% of the time you can hold the throttle wide open, and the challenge is to make that 50% into 75%.

For some reason I thought they had an effective top speed of around 60mph. Gearing limited stock, I guess?

Yeah. They have the Reagan-era speedo to fool people into thinking it "redlines" at 55mph but it'll go past that even stock.

Meh. I'd keep saving. It's a 650, but it's Air/Oil cooled, so it doesn't put out significantly more HP than the DRZ (although more torques), it's as heavy as the DRZ, and it's using older suspension. Save your cash and buy a BB kit for the DRZ, or really save and pick up a 610 or 690.
