This. Cyber Thug was the closest thing available with at least one black comedian and a distinctly urban vibe. Goddamnit, someone bring it back!

Beyond that, I'd just be happy with more black comedians showing up as guests. There's DAG, Don Glover, Wyatt Cenac, and...? Frankly, I'd rather hear an interview with any member of the Wayans family rather than another dreary Tig Notaro bit.

Cedric the Entertainer and Bernie Mac both wrote interesting books about some of their experiences in touring, working their way up through the clubs, and lots of other stuff. Particularly with Bernie Mac I would have loved to hear some unedited, free conversation about those experiences. If you listen to a lot of interviews with comedians (regardless of color), a lot of them who were born in the 60s and 70s talk about being heavily influenced by Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, and later, Eddie Murphy, even if their own styles are totally different. How is it that we hear Tracy Morgan on NPR but not on WTF?

I don't know what Chris Rock is up to at the moment, but he seems like a natural host. He had his own late night show on HBO, and on top of that, gets to draw on stories from standup, SNL, working with Louis CK, long affiliation with Adam Sandler, making movies both good and bad, having his own TV sitcom, etc. A broad comedy resume, a good talent for jokes and storytelling...

It's at this point I tip over my King piece, shake your hand, and help rearrange the chess board for the next match. I'd somehow not heard of that at all, despite having HBO.

I still think Chris Rock would be great for a podcast or a Sirius show or something. If not him, hell, Mos Def or somebody? Bill Cosby's in his own class and his days of guest-hosting the Tonight Show are long gone. Eddie Murphy is... has anyone gotten a real, honest interview out of him in the past 20 years? Steve Harvey's busy with the Feud, don't know what Cedric is up to these days, Jamie Foxx and Will Smith are too busy with Hollywood. There's got to be someone out there that fits the bill. I'd almost say Tim Meadows, who I think can be legitimately funny, but I don't know if he's got what it takes to draw a crowd.

Carolla's had Alonzo Bodden on a couple times, but him and Patrice O'Neal on WTF pretty much covers it as far as I know. There was one WTF quite a while ago now (episode #46) where Marc Maron had on two black comics, W. Kamau Bell and Dwayne Kennedy, and they discuss this at length. He mentions at the beginning of the show how he feels self-conscious about not having more black comics on, and it's one of those things he'd like to change but they just don't cross paths or play the same circuits generally. It's been a while since I listened to that episode, but basically they get into that, and how comedy in a more general sense is split up pretty heavily.

Oh boy
Can I suggest the Field Negro Guide to Arts & Culture? It's got W. Kamau Bell and Vernon Reid from Living Colour(the band). Episodes have been appearing very sporadically but I found it pretty funny and interesting.

Yea I like how even they've realized it blows. Still, this one was a great episode just for all the 'wait is THAT what they were trying?!' moments.

I had to deal with some of this self-segregation stuff back when I was doing corporate training, and I generally pointed it out and made fun of it, comparing the whole thing to an 8th grade dance where the boys and girls are sticking to opposite ends of the gymnasium. Somebody's got to make the first move, and if an external force isn't there to push people together, I say the onus is on the guys running the existing podcasts. Like last week when The Nerdist podcast did a whole Black Dynamite showing and followup Q&A? Solid.

Jay Pharaoh has been a big hit on SNL with his impressions, and he basically got the job based on his YouTube videos. Kenan Thompson still gets the spotlight, but I'd love to see Jay talk about how he developed his various voices like when Carlos Alazraqui talked about it on WTF.

This really isn't a huge personal deal with me as a white guy, but since we've got this whole new medium that is producing a ton of great new comedy as well as commentary and history on the art form, I wish it included a broader spectrum of comedy traditions.

Bobcat told this hilarious story on a recent Carolla Live podcast about being on a plane with a bunch of Special Olympians that had one of the engines go out mid flight. It must have been a bad crowd since a bunch of them were booing at both the story and Carolla's follow up joke about wanting an X-games for the Special Olympics.

I thought it was really god damned funny. :colbert:

I dunno about Jonah, but I stopped listening to The Nerdist for a little while after they went on some self improvement kick and spent hours talking about their fat bodies and how they turned their lives around and brought on some boring dude to talk about motivation. Chris actually mentioned some of the complaints he got about that podcast, with one saying that it "sounded like an hour-long advertisement."

And god drat is Brad Meltzer a boring blowhard. He was terrible on Adam Carolla's podcast too.

I was in the standby line for CDR last night, and managed to get seats on the stage, and who ends up showing up?

Whitest Kids u Know, Nick Swardson, Sarah Silverman, Chris Hardwick (who sat down next to us during his set, and asked questions to me and my fellow Canadians who had travelled to CDR), Chelsea Peretti, Amy Schumer, and loving Aziz Ansari. I had watched Aziz's Letterman interview, and he didn't repeat a single joke. He was testing out bits for his new special he's gonna record in DC.

And one of 2 Indians sitting on stage in the audience, Aziz pointed out to the first Indian and said "That brown guy is really excited!" then he looked at me, and said, "That other brown guys is SUPER excited and he's got a BEARD!" I was pretty much in heaven.

that and I had seen Conan earlier in the day and yelled out at Pardo that I love NNF while he was warming up, and he was very grateful. Then security told me to be quiet.

You're lucky. I was at a recording of Late Night with Conan O'Brien about a hundred years ago (the guests were Tom Brokaw, Norm MacDonald, and Angie Everheart) and a couple people got dragged out after the warm-up for yelling poo poo out. Someone else tried disrupting the show during Tom's segment, yelling about cutting BOCES funding or something, and a whole chunk of the crowd got ejected, even though it was only two people. They're really super strict about the crowd during late night talk show recordings, with David Letterman's show being the most rigid.

They had to restart Brokaw's segment, and the first thing he said after sitting down was "You've got such a well behaved audience", and the crowd cracked up. It was neat, seeing it on TV and being part of some stupid inside joke.

As many of you are aware, me and my pal Nikki Glaser have a podcast called You Had To Be There. So far we've done 16 episodes that we're really proud of! The concept is simple: we invite one comedian, one musician, and a small audience of friends to hang out in my Brooklyn apartment. It's always a good time, and no topics are off limits. It will feel like you're hanging out with us, except with none of the awkward requests for spooning afterwards.

Past guests include: Kristen Schaal, Ted Alexandro, Ted Leo, Mike Doughty, Hannibal Buress, Rachel Feinstein, writers of Late Night w/Jimmy Fallon, Tiny Apartment, Amy Miles, Rory Scovel, and many more. And we have some really amazing guests coming up in the next few months.
