I am the math man.

CloseFriend, really glad you liked Celine and Julie. The ones I've seen from your list I'm not that enthusiastic about, so I'll give you Carlito's Way since it's been on your list the longest and it is pretty good.

Klute is really good, and I think it might even be better a second time, but something didn't quite work and I think it was the odd use of Neo-noir stylings. Despite the setup and narrative which paint things in terms of Sutherland's Klute, the film is really about Fonda's character and her choices and feelings. She's a complex and fascinating character and well worth watching, while Klute is the titular detective and a total nonentity. This isn't much of a problem on the whole, for most of the film Fonda is front and center and we get some really interesting stuff, but it does make the turns back towards Klute rather jarring. Also, the "music" used to make certain scenes suspenseful is pretty terrible and undermines the suspense. Basically it's a great films that undermines itself a bit by some odd directorial decisions.

Updated list:

La grande guerra I get the feeling this is one of those overlooked classics.

The Ascent Not seen anything by Shepitko but this is highly praised and nearly every post 1930s Soviet film I've seen has been a hit with me.

Les dimanches de Ville d'Avray Criticker says I'll love this, it's French and it won the best Foreign Film Oscar.

Les misérables (1934) Four and a half hours, really?I've never read the book so I have little idea what to expect.

India Song I've read mixed things about this, but I'm intrigued by the idea. Not enough to watch it on my own however, which is where this thread comes in.

Dance, Girl, Dance I have no idea about this, but it's certainly something I should see. Dorothy Arzner was a pioneer and I know nothing about her.

American Gigolo I have some doubts as to whether I'll like this, but I just found out it's apparently influenced by Bresson's Pickpocket which I didn't expect.

Plein soleil Clément is another director from whom I've seen one magnificent film and never got around to watching any others.

Un homme et une femme Don't know much about this, a romance of some sort.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer I dunno, I'd seen this mentioned before and now it's on the TSPDT list.

For the hell of it, here's what I've seen so far:

Peaceful Anarchy, watch American Gigolo

Watched The Heiress, and did not care for it at all. Perhaps it was just not type of movie, but I guess I just didn't see what was so great about it. I didn't find myself caring about any of the characters and the story was simply uninteresting. Glad to cross it off a few different lists I go by. 3/10

My List:

Girl Who Played With Fire: Only makes sense to put this on the list now

Twelve O'Clock High: I'm a fan of old war movies

The Basketball Diaries: There's something intriguing about watching a person fall from grace

Solaris: Russian and 3 hours long? Sure, why not?

Three...Extremes: Asian horror intrigues me after seeing a lot of interesting ideas ruined by Hollywood

Blood Work: I know it's not supposed to be among his best, but it's still Eastwood

The Informer: I understand this is a must-see

The Crazies (1973): I didn't even realize the new one was a remake until I randomly found this one on Netflix, and George Romero is a master of his craft

The Cove: Documentaries tend to get lost in the shuffle when I watch movies for Oscar season

Shadows: Another one I see on a lot of lists that I have yet to watch

Watched: Thin Blue Line 8/10, Let the Right One In 9/10, Evil Dead 2 8/10, Exit Through the Gift Shop 7/10, Hoop Dreams 9/10, The Devil's Backbone 6/10, Antichrist 3/10, Boys Don't Cry 9/10, The Producers 7/10, Malcolm X 7/10, [Rec] 10/10, The Pianist 8/10, The Virgin Suicides 5/10, The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia 7/10, The Road Warrior 8/10, Winchester '73 8/10, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 7/10, The Passion of Joan of Arc 5/10, Hoffa 7/10, Out of Sight 9/10, Das Boot 10/10, The Motorcycle Diaries 8/10, Rio Bravo 7/10, Arthur 7/10, A Soldier's Story 8/10, 8 1/2 7/10, The Heiress 3/10

I've never done this before but since I'm sorely lacking in "classic" movies, I figure this could be fun! :)

Bluefire, you have to watch The Cove

Here are the first few movies I can think of to watch:

1. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark - I love the Disneyland ride and I saw the 4th film, but none of the first three. I don't think it's fair to base the series off the only one I have seen: The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

2. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope - I actually haven't seen any of the Star Wars films but figure I should start in the beginning

3. Schindler's List - I've always heard how amazing it is

4. Gone with the Wind - I love older films and it'd be nice to finally know who Scarlett O'Hara is

5. Jaws - I'm pretty sure I'm the only person left on the planet who hasn't seen this

6. Life is Beautiful - I unfortunately know how it ends but have never actually seen such this

7. How to Steal A Million - One of the only Audrey Hepburn films I haven't seen yet

8. Forrest Gump - I've put it off since I'm not a major Tom Hanks fan but I figure I should finally get the "life is like a box of chocolates" reference

9. The Godfather - Not a big fan of movies with violence but again, it's a classic that everyone knows of but I've never seen

Enjoyed a lot Le Samouraï, very well shot and cool as hell. I don't have much to say besides that. Not really the fault of the film, but mine as I was expecting to be a more action packed movie and watching it on a lazy Sunday afternoon, made me miss a lot of the psychological exploration that it's probably going down in the film.
It was still a pretty cool film and definitely worth the watch, I shall watch it again another time, and paying more attention to it's saying.

My shame list:

:zombie:Infernal Affairs Scorsese remade it so it should be good.

High and Low Sounds like a Kurosawa take on Hitchcock's type of movie really.

Bande à part Tarantino's favorite movie if I'm not wrong.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Return of the western spot.

Bridge Over River Kwai Three William Holden movies in a row.

Notorious Ingrid Bergman :swoon: and I hear Gary Grant is in this too, but who cares.

Some Like it Hot Men in drag and Marilyn Monroe. Yup.

Singin' in the Rain Time for something lighter.

Touch of Evil "I'm supposed to do a thriller for Universal. They want Charlton Heston as a Mexican."

A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies Martin Scorsese talks about cinema for 4 hours. Sounds awesome really.

Have seen so far: Mulholland Drive, The Departed, 2001:A Space Odyssey, M, The Trial, Vertigo, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, On the Waterfront, Magnolia, Brazil, Days of Heaven, The Shining, Throne of Blood, The Searchers, La Grand Illusion, Ladri di Biciclette, Tokyo Story, À bout de souffle, Once Upon a Time in America, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Boogie Nights, The Wild Bunch, Dial M for Murder, Network, La Dolce Vita, American: The Bill Hicks Story, Le Samouraï.

Electronico6, Bande A Part has some really great sequences.

Rebecca was good, but it just didn't interest me as much the other great Hitchcock films. I liked the sudden twist halfway through, as I thought I knew where the story was going, but I was wrong.3.5/5

Bed and Board
The continuing adventures of Antoine Doinel.
Hearts and Minds
I always confuse this with Night and Fog
Sleuth
This sounds very similar to Deathtrap. I hope its better.
Before Sunrise
This gets a lot of praise, but I don't like Ethan Hawke at all.
Shock Corridor
Don't know too much about it.
L'atalante
Next highest on TSPDT. I really know nothing at all about this one.
Far From Heaven
Next highest on TSPDT's 21st Century list.
Shadows
More Cassavetes..
Alice
I've seen a few of Svankmajer's shorts and they are interesting.
Andrei Rublev
On the most lists. I know nothing about this other than that it is Tarkovsky and long.

I am the math man.

TenSpadesBeTrump, Sleuth is cool, go watch it.

American Gigolo is a good film, though one that didn't fully enthrall me. Perhaps it's just the superficial similarities and because I saw it yesterday, but it's interesting to see this in contrast to Klute. They both feature sex workers involved in murders and intrigue and dealing with their romantic emotions, but they play out differently, not just because of different directorial styles and gender issues, but because of the decade between them. Klute is very 70s New York, grimy and dark and creepy, while Gigolo is 80s L.A. glitz and glamour and drugs and money. It's an atmosphere that's less interesting to me and frankly kept me at a distance throughout the film. That's not to say it wasn't well made, because it was, and it has a very intriguing core including Gere's character who grew on me as the film went on. I don't think I would have noticed the Bressonian touches if I hadn't been looking for them, but they're there and it's interesting to see because they don't really fit the rest of the films style, but aren't totally out of place.

A pretty good number.

watched:

Notorious - Seems like it was influential on spy films of the future although this definitely feels nascent and underdeveloped. Memorable ending however.
Alex really got the short end of the stick in the end.

#129 Witness for the Prosecution - I've liked every Billy Wilder movie thus far. I don't know anything about this. (added 1/7/11)

#146 Into the Wild - Seen it mentioned in the thread a few times. (added 1/29/11)

#154 Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans - First Oscar best picture winner IIRC. (added 2/10/11)

#155 The Gold Rush - Famous Chaplin movie I've heard about. (added 3/5/11)

#159 The Big Sleep - I've seen mentioned but know very little about it. 4/2/11

#160 The Manchurian Candidate - Haven't seen this or the remake. I remember Ebert citing this a few times on TV. Something about political brainwashing. 4/2/11

#163 Life of Brian - IIRC a friend told me that there is a funny dinner scene in this. 4/2/11

NEW #165 The Kid - Older Chaplin film that I know little about. 4/17/11

#166 Finding Nemo - Saw a little of this on TV and it seemed to be decent. 4/2/11

The Bourne Identity - Technically not on the top 250 but I need to watch this before The Bourne Ultimatum (which is currently #170). 4/7/11

Zogo, The Big Sleep is one of my favorites, I hope you like it.

Sleuth was a lot of fun. The twists were a bit too predictable (Michael Caine's makeup was fairly convincing, but his voice still gave him away), but the excellent acting, especially from Olivier, made up for it. Similar to Deathtrap, but Caine kisses fewer dudes. Does anyone know if the 2007 remake is any good? 4.5/5

It's ok but doesn't fully come together, the last act especially. There's an unfinished thread comparing the two floating around somewhere.

TenSpadesBeTrump, can't pass up the chance to recommend Buñuel, watch The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie.

Dance, Girl, Dance isn't perfect, it has some editing and pacing issues and I could do with a little less drunk Louis Hayward. Those end up being minor nitpicks, though, in what was a magnificently lovely little film that had me much more enamored than I could ever have imagined. Maureen O'Hara and Lucille Ball are a large part of that, each one is stunning on her own and their interactions are magical. Beyond that it's just a really sweet and enjoyable picture with a little bit of everything. Some nice dance numbers, sparkling dialogue, and a real underlying sincerity that allows it to have a few more profound moments without being out of place amongst the levity. It's one of those films whose joy I can't really describe, but it really made me happy to watch it.

Paris nous appartient Despite loving Celine and Julie I've never seen another Rivette film. Let's start at the beginning.

It Did Clara Bow really have it? I need to find out.

Peaceful Anarchy, watch Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer

The Cove was interesting, a very disturbing look at the dolphin fishing in Japan. It was pretty well made, though I felt it leaned a bit too heavily on the shock factor. 7/10

Brokeback Mountain: One of few best picture nominees from the past decade I haven't seen

Shadows: Another one I see on a lot of lists that I have yet to watch

Watched: Thin Blue Line 8/10, Let the Right One In 9/10, Evil Dead 2 8/10, Exit Through the Gift Shop 7/10, Hoop Dreams 9/10, The Devil's Backbone 6/10, Antichrist 3/10, Boys Don't Cry 9/10, The Producers 7/10, Malcolm X 7/10, [Rec] 10/10, The Pianist 8/10, The Virgin Suicides 5/10, The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia 7/10, The Road Warrior 8/10, Winchester '73 8/10, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 7/10, The Passion of Joan of Arc 5/10, Hoffa 7/10, Out of Sight 9/10, Das Boot 10/10, The Motorcycle Diaries 8/10, Rio Bravo 7/10, Arthur 7/10, A Soldier's Story 8/10, 8 1/2 7/10, The Heiress 3/10, The Cove 7/10

Bande à Part was okay. I guess. I don't think today was the best of days to watch New Wave French cinema. The dance scene was a stand out though.

My shame list:

:zombie:Infernal Affairs Scorsese remade it so it should be good.

High and Low Sounds like a Kurosawa take on Hitchcock's type of movie really.

Solaris I hear those Soviets made some good movies.

Have seen so far: Mulholland Drive, The Departed, 2001:A Space Odyssey, M, The Trial, Vertigo, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, On the Waterfront, Magnolia, Brazil, Days of Heaven, The Shining, Throne of Blood, The Searchers, La Grand Illusion, Ladri di Biciclette, Tokyo Story, À bout de souffle, Once Upon a Time in America, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, Boogie Nights, The Wild Bunch, Dial M for Murder, Network, La Dolce Vita, American: The Bill Hicks Story, Le Samouraï, Bande à Part.

Electronico6, I haven't seen any of those, so I'll give you Solaris which is also on my list.

Lawrence Of Arabia. When I first started watching this, I was afraid it was going to be another sacred cow (emphasis on cow) but as soon as the overly long overture, motorcycle riding and funeral were over, I was sucked in. Peter O'Toole was electrifying, enough to keep my attention during the beautiful desert shots, and the rest of the movie was perfectly cast. The movie kind of lost me in the second act and I am still rolling around the ending in my head but it was still one of the best movies I have ever seen. That shot of Lawrence walking over the wind blown desert after the first meeting with the Prince was wild. Gave it a 92/100 on Criticker.

My list:

The Seven Samurai: I rented this one from Blockbuster Online a few years ago. Tried to watch it at 3 in the morning and fell asleep. Thought the picture looked lovely and I decided to wait for the HD-DVD Blu-Ray instead of holding up one of my BBO slots to watch the movie later.

City Lights: I have never watched a Chaplin movie and I have heard this is his best.

8 1/2: Mix the reasons for The Seven Samurai/The Seventh Seal (It sounds lovely but "deep" movies tend to intimidate me before I force myself to sit through them.) together and you'll have the reason why I haven't watched 8 1/2 yet.

Back To The Future: I think I seen part of 2 on tv (is that the one with the hoverboard scene?) but I have never felt the need to track this down.

Dazed And Confused: Sitting on my shelf, waiting for me to watch it. Bought this when HD-DVD died. Remember seeing part of it on TV and I enjoyed it.

The Maltese Falcon: Never got around to watching it. I've seen three Bogart movies so far (Treasure Of Sierra Madre was one of the greatest films I have ever seen, In A Lonely Place I liked, Casablanca I didn't) but I have never been a big noir fan.

Aguirre: The Wrath of God: I went through a big Herzog kick a few years ago but stopped before I watched this movie. Why I didn't watch Aguirre before his remake of Nosferatu is beyond me.

Black Narcissus: I actually imported this from the UK way before the American Criterion Blu-Ray release. I kind of forgot about it but watching Peeping Tom reminded me how I need to get off my rear end and watch it.

The Third Man: I bought it day one when it was released on Blu-Ray by Criterion but I have never gotten around to watching it. No real excuse. It just never crosses my mind when I go for a movie.

Solaris: I haven't seen any Andrei Tarkovsky yet.

Woodstock: No excuse for this one. I own it on Blu-Ray, I've watched some of the song outtakes but I've never sat down and watched the whole thing. The runtime always make me grab a different movie over this one.

Watched: The Seventh Seal (83/100), The Man With No Name Trilogy (79/100 - 80/100 - 79/100), Once Upon A Time In The West (79/100), Alien (69/100), The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy (70/100 - 67/100 - 69/100), Annie Hall (79/100), Lawrence Of Arabia (92/100)

I'm not sure why I liked The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, but I did. Not much of a plot to work with (which is okay), and while each thematically linked scene was good, I just don't think they gelled as much as they were intended to. It just seemed to be odd tangent after odd tangent, but as I said, each one was interesting on its own. 4/5

Dazed And Confused. It was nice to see the movie that Geeks And Freaks ripped off wholesale. It was also strange to recognize so many actors/actresses. Beyond that, I wasn't a fan. It seemed empty. The angriest Russian around
Sporadic, go with The Third Man.

Finished All About Eve, thought it was a perfectly good melodrama. I didn't know that much about it going in and was delighted to find it was about the theatre (I'm training to be an actor). I liked a lot of it: Bette Davis is terrific (this was a great introduction to her), Thelma Ritter is hilarious, and I like George Sanders and Celeste Holm as well. Something I noted: it's curious that this was made the same year as Billy Wilder's Sunset Blvd., which is just as cynical about the movie business as this one is about the theatre. Both have talented casts, look great, and have sharp dialogue. AAE is more about the young usurping the old, while SB is more about the business destroying everyone. But where this one missteps is in the character of Eve- she doesn't really feel like a person, which might seem like a silly complaint about a melodrama, but this is a particularly angry and bitter melodrama, and that it treats her character like a cold, calculating monster full of nothing more than ambition seems false to me. Anne Baxter does a fine job with what she has, but she ultimately isn't given a human being to play, which is frustrating considering how hateful this movie and its character are towards her. George Sanders delivers his takedown of her spectacularly, but I finally found it to be more cruel than anything else. I think it's telling that Joe Mankiewicz wrote this after his brother's acclaim for Citizen Kane. The film is so full of bitterness that the villain it created isn't a very well defined character. I don't mind bitchy characters in melodrama (I'm a defender of Scarlett in Gone with the Wind), but something about this one rubbed me the wrong way.

Updated list:

1. Anything by Abbas Kiarostami- I haven’t seen any of his films, but all this talk about Certified Copy has me curious. I have access to Taste of Cherry and Ten.

2. Silent era: The Big Parade- I own it on video, so watching would be easy, but…

3. 1930s: I Am A Fugitive on a Chain Gang- I liked Little Caesar pretty well, so logic says I’ll like Mervyn LeRoy’s other most famous movie. I have never seen anything with Paul Muni.

4. 1940s: Mildred Pierce- I loved Casablanca and The Adventures of Robin Hood, couldn’t stand Yankee Doodle Dandy, and feel that I need to see more Michael Curtiz. How about this supposed masterpiece that Todd Haynes is remaking for HBO with Kate Winslet. Also: I’ve never seen a Joan Crawford film.

5. 1950s: The Bad and the Beautiful- Another cynical melodrama about showbiz? Sounds good.

6. 1960s: The Umbrellas of Cherbourgh- Love musicals, so why not check out a French New Wave one?

7. 1970s: Cries and Whispers- I’ve seen a good handful of Bergman (The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Persona, Scenes from a Marriage), but I could always use an excuse to watch more.

8. 1980s: Prizzi’s Honor- I recorded it, but it was never watched, and now I don't have it anymore. But I'd still like to see it.

9. 1990s: Kundun- I never had much interest, but, well, it is Scorsese, and my library has a copy, so why not?

10. 2000s: Talk to Her- I’ve only seen one of Almodovar’s films, Volver, and I liked that very much. I’ve heard universally terrific things about this one.

Finally seen: The Searchers (A), Pather Panchali (B+), The Sting (A-), Ran (A), The Great Dictator (A-), Fitzcarraldo (A), Badlands (A), Time Bandits (A-), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (A), The Apartment (A), The Last Waltz (A-), City Lights (A), Modern Times (A), Broken Blossoms (B), The Gold Rush (A-), The General (A-), Grave of the Fireflies (A), Red River (A), Koyaanisqatsi (B), American Graffiti (A), The Kingdom (B), Adventures of Robin Hood (A-), La Dolce Vita (A), Sherlock Jr. (B+), Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse (A-), In the Mood for Love (A-), Hoop Dreams (A), Swimming to Cambodia (A-), The Purple Rose of Cairo (A), The Right Stuff (A), Orpheus (B+), The Manchurian Candidate (A-), Little Caesar (B+), The Battle of Algiers (A-), Yi Yi (A), Shane (A), All About Eve (B-)

Haven't seen anything on your list, this one sounds the most interesting.

Watched Once Upon a Time in the West. I prefer the tone and style of the Dollars trilogy, but this is still a pretty great movie. I wasn't bothered by the super slow pace, at least it is consistent from the excellent opening scene to the very end. I can take or leave Bronson's character. and Cardinale serves pretty much solely as eye-candy, but Fonda is amazing. His casting as the villain was an excellent decision.

Also watched The Sting. The plot is predictable, but the movie is really fun anyway. I loved the portrayal of the depression era city, the dirtiness of the 1970's fits just as well there. Redford and Newman have great chemistry.

1. It's a Wonderful Life - Seems like it might be too cheesy.

2. Singin' in the Rain - I guess I have to put this here after A Clockwork Orange used the title song so prominently. :zombie: Has been on list the longest. :zombie:

3. The Maltese Falcon - Another classic noir, haven't seen Bogart since Casablanca.

4. The Night of the Hunter - Actually had this for a week but never got around to watching it for some reason.

5. Once Upon a Time in the West Scenes from a Marriage - Haven't watched anything by Bergman in a while.

6. The Exterminating Angel - Highest PSI in my Criticker profile. Don't know anything else about it.

7. City of God - Going into this one fairly blind, which is rare since I somehow read the ending to every movie ever made.

8. A Woman Under the Influence - I got nothin'.

9. The Sting Badlands - Maybe I can watch all of Malick's films before the new one comes out.

10. Le Samouraï - This sounds...interesting.

Watched: The Seventh Seal, Moon, Barton Fink, The Thin Blue Line, Cool Hand Luke, Citizen Kane, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Goodfellas, Casablanca, City Lights, Seven Samurai, The Bicycle Thief, Do the Right Thing, The Battle of Algiers, On the Waterfront, Wild Strawberries, The Trial, Adaptation, Unforgiven, Annie Hall, The 400 Blows, Diabolique, Mulholland Dr., Dirty Harry, The 39 Steps, Aguirre: The Wrath of God, 8 1/2, Boogie Nights, A Streetcar Named Desire, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The General, Pickpocket, Pulp Fiction, Amadeus, Lawrence of Arabia, Eraserhead, The Lady Vanishes, The Wild Bunch, A Clockwork Orange, Platoon, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Ikiru, Jules and Jim, The Asphalt Jungle, M, The Thin Red Line, Dial M for Murder, The Sting, Once Upon a Time in the West

I am the math man.

Atheistdeals.com, Buñuel is great and The Exterminating Angel is his masterpiece. Watch it.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer isn't particularly my kind of film, but I was reasonably impressed by how effectively disturbing it is without being too gruesome. The low budget limitations really add to the feel and it has some really effective editing techniques that make the violence more bearable and more effective in shocking the audience. All in all I don't think I'll watch this again but I'm glad I watched it once.

Paris nous appartient Despite loving Celine and Julie I've never seen another Rivette film. Let's start at the beginning.

It Did Clara Bow really have it? I need to find out.

The Big Sleep - This was a good movie. The plot got a little convoluted but I was still very interested to see how everything unraveled. Bogart is basically becoming my favorite pre1960s actor. Martha Vickers is frighteningly sexy in this.

IMDb list:

#129 Witness for the Prosecution - I've liked every Billy Wilder movie thus far. I don't know anything about this. (added 1/7/11)

#146 Into the Wild - Seen it mentioned in the thread a few times. (added 1/29/11)

#154 Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans - First Oscar best picture winner IIRC. (added 2/10/11)

#155 The Gold Rush - Famous Chaplin movie I've heard about. (added 3/5/11)

#160 The Manchurian Candidate - Haven't seen this or the remake. I remember Ebert citing this a few times on TV. Something about political brainwashing. 4/2/11

#163 Life of Brian - IIRC a friend told me that there is a funny dinner scene in this. 4/2/11

#165 The Kid - Older Chaplin film that I know little about. 4/17/11

#166 Finding Nemo - Saw a little of this on TV and it seemed to be decent. 4/2/11

The Bourne Identity - Technically not on the top 250 but I need to watch this before The Bourne Ultimatum (which is currently #170). 4/7/11

new #168 Ikiru - It's been recommended in the past. Just haven't gotten around to it. 4/21/11

I think this is one of the most disturbing horror films ever made, mostly because the characters seem like real people you see in your daily life. It really makes me wonder if some people are simply born without souls.

Zogo, watch Ikiru

Hearts and Minds had some very compelling and disturbing images, but it was so emotionally manipulative that it was difficult to take it too seriously. For example, there is one soldier who is interviewed throughout the film about how much he loved being a soldier, but not until the last few minutes does he begin to talk about how he lost faith in America, at which point the camera pull back to show that he is in a wheelchair. The camera focuses on his legs while he is still talking. The film is full of ironic juxtapositions that try to form a strong message, but they push too hard in one direction and end up failing. 3/5

Solaris was boring, and interesting, but mostly boring. Andrei just went overboard with the slow on "slow pace". I find that(for example) Kubrik found the perfect pitch in 2001, but Solaris just drags on and on and on. Kinda of a shame cause there's a really brilliant movie somewhere in here.

:zombie:Infernal Affairs Scorsese remade it so it should be good.

High and Low Sounds like a Kurosawa take on Hitchcock's type of movie really.

It's a Wonderful Life Jimmy Stewart and Christmas!

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Return of the western spot.

Notorious Ingrid Bergman :swoon: and I hear Gary Grant is in this too, but who cares.

Singin' in the Rain Time for something lighter.

Watched Brokeback Mountain. It was a well done love story, though that first scene in the tent felt really awkward. What I really enjoyed, though, were the beautiful shots in the Rocky Mountains. The empty wilderness was a perfect scenery to represent the loneliness of their relationship. 7/10

The Italian Job (1969): Never saw the original, but hear it's pretty good

Shadows: Another one I see on a lot of lists that I have yet to watch

Watched: Thin Blue Line 8/10, Let the Right One In 9/10, Evil Dead 2 8/10, Exit Through the Gift Shop 7/10, Hoop Dreams 9/10, The Devil's Backbone 6/10, Antichrist 3/10, Boys Don't Cry 9/10, The Producers 7/10, Malcolm X 7/10, [Rec] 10/10, The Pianist 8/10, The Virgin Suicides 5/10, The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia 7/10, The Road Warrior 8/10, Winchester '73 8/10, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 7/10, The Passion of Joan of Arc 5/10, Hoffa 7/10, Out of Sight 9/10, Das Boot 10/10, The Motorcycle Diaries 8/10, Rio Bravo 7/10, Arthur 7/10, A Soldier's Story 8/10, 8 1/2 7/10, The Heiress 3/10, The Cove 7/10, Brokeback Mountain 7/10

Just saw Plan 9 From Outer Space. Of course it wasn't what you would consider a good movie, but I will say it was enjoyable. The pie plates flying over Hollywood was memorable, as was the bad dialogue and inconsistencies. It probably did start the 'So Bad It's Good' meme. Loved the aliens 'Stupid, Stupid' dialogue.

My List:
M - Heard alot about it, but never saw it.

No Country For Old Men - As someone on this thread mentioned, I also get this confused with There will be Blood. That will be added to my list later

Lawrence of Arabia - I've seen this has been recommended alot. Haven't seen it yet.

Brazil

Duck Soup - Another Marx Brothers film that I'd like to see

The Princess and the Frog - I usually make sure that I watch a DVD when I buy it, but I bought this movie over a year ago and I still haven't seen it.

Rashomon - Going to stick with a Kurasawa movie here.

My Fair Lady - I'm going to stick with musicals in this spot.

Dracula - Never saw any of the classic Hollywood horror movies, but now that I've gotten interested in Bela Lugosi (through the Ed Wood pictures), this seems like the natural first pick.

The Public Enemy - Never saw any James Cagney film.

Movies Seen: Seven Samurai, Dune, Singin' in the Rain, Animal Crackers, Once Upon a Time in the West, Amadeus, Double Indemnity, The Day the Earth Stood Still, 12 Angry Men, Ed Wood, Sunset Boulevard, The Dark Knight, Plan 9 From Outer Space

Tum again?
First entry into the thread. This looks like fun :allears:

Dmitri Russkie, you should most definitely watch Brazil.

My List:

The Third Man: I know its a film noir classic with Orson Welles and its supposed to be awesome, but never got around to seeing it.

Dogville: Been quite interested in Von Trier's work lately and I've heard this film is interesting, albeit a little strange.

Drugstore Cowboys: I'm actually woefully unexperienced with Van Sant films and I know this is one of his most famous ones.

Gone with the Wind: I know its a classic but the idea of watching a 4.5 hour romance doesn't exactly excite me. I should probably suck it up and just watch it though.

The Seven Samurai: This will sound like blasphemy to many of the cinephiles in this thread but Kirosawa movies bore me to tears. Its not that I don't like long movies, or even slow movies, I don't know I just don't find his very interesting. But everybody seems to love this drat movie, so I might as well try it.

M: Been on my list for ages but have never got around to finishing it.

The Graduate: This movie is apparently very highly regarded, though the premise seems quite dull to me.

Singin' in the Rain: I don't really like musicals but maybe this one is worth seeing.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: I really loved The Sting so I'm guessing I would like this too.

City Lights: Never watched a Chaplin film from start to finish. Might as well give this one a shot.

The Seven Samurai is certainly a long movie but it's brilliant in combining action with highly-focused individual and group characterizations. Hopefully this will be the one to change your mind.

I have finally watched . The movie starts off with a great opening sequence of a man, feeling trapped, who escapes into a dream world. Symbolizing a recurring theme throughout the film, he is unceremoniously yanked back to the earth to attend to matters of real life. I have to admit, 8½ did not hold my attention very well for the remaining first half of the movie. Perhaps it was the crappy subtitles, but it seemed overly difficult to understand. Towards the end, when the events are closer to reality and the film-making process, the themes of the movie were evoked more clearly and as a result I could appreciate it at a higher level.

New list:

The Killing Now the earliest Kubrick I have not seen

:zombie: Reds Given Warren Beatty's political views, probably a personally important biography

Touch of Evil Orson Welles, film noir, sounds good

Paris, Texas Going into this one blind, albeit with high expectations

Serpico Continuing with the Lumet collection...I've got a few to go after this

Matewan I suspect this will be pretty dry, but a good story nonetheless

The Thin Blue Line One of the most important documentaries I've somehow missed

The Abyss Greatly anticipating this after being intrigued by the "Making of..." documentary.

Glengarry Glen Ross Looking forward to Lemmon in one of his later roles

Inside Job Most recent Best Documentary, seems watchable and relevant

Watched: Once Upon a Time in America, The Sting, MASH, Ran, The Big Sleep, Army of Shadows, On the Waterfront, Fantastic Planet, Annie Hall, Barton Fink, The 400 Blows, La Grande Illusion, Gandhi, The Hill, Manhattan, The Host, The Bicycle Thief, The Asphalt Jungle, The Insider, Bringing Out the Dead, 8½

Into the Wild - It has some nice shots of nature and scenery but beyond that I ultimately see a reckless romantic who loves poetry and literature who goes into the wilderness and dies. Not only that but he has a self-righteous attitude to boot. About his datsun of all things, "my datsun is good enough.. don't you dare buy me another car!" I wasn't too fond of the consistent mishmosh of philosophical rambling narration either.

During one of the funnier scenes. Supertramp sees a civilized man in a suit sitting in a restaurant and panicks and sees his own face transposed onto the body. He then runs out of the local shelter as fast as he can.

I will say that I don't know what percentage of what was portrayed was accurate (if at all) but I didn't like the way the protagonist came across on screen. I think the circumstances of his death undermine the films message. However, the real person did seem to be altruistic in donating all his money. But then did he really burn money out in the wilderness carelessly as well?

The tone of the film reminds me of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and almost seems to be celebrating this troubled guy who runs away from his screwed up family. Why can't he make a 25cent phone call to his sister? I've heard many stories of people "going off the grid" so-to-speak and I've met many "free spirits" who are beholden to no one and have their own strongly definied mantras as to how they approach every facet of life. I think I would've rather seen a story about one of the more competent ones.

Why bring a gun into the wilderness but not a good map/compass?
It got a strong reaction out of me so I guess that's good.

My assignment was Ikiru which coincidentally shares some parallels with Into the Wild (existence, death, desire for significance). It did have a more focused and stronger established thesis.

I've seen enough Kurosawa films to think that if he wasn't a filmmaker he would've been a psychologist. Rashomon (with perception) and this both examine some psychological principles like the fundamental attribution error when the characters try to make sense of Watanabe's motives of the previous months at his wake. Eventually they come to the right conclusion but before that it's interesting to see how they struggle with each other before putting the pieces together.

My one question would be why did the doctors lie about his prognosis?

IMDb list:

#129 Witness for the Prosecution - I've liked every Billy Wilder movie thus far. I don't know anything about this. (added 1/7/11)

#166 Finding Nemo - Saw some of this on TV and it seemed decent. 4/2/11

The Bourne Identity - Technically not on the top 250 but I need to watch this before The Bourne Ultimatum (which is currently #170). 4/7/11

NEW #171 The Best Years of Our Lives - One of 25 films to win 7+ Oscars. 4/23/11

NEW #172 Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Is this similar to Snatch? 4/23/11

The whole film is funny.

Singin' in the Rain was a much better movie than I expected. Mainly cause it's not really my type of movie. It's a musical. I don't really like them. But! This one was just so much fun and well made that it was really hard not to enjoy every moment. The dancing was so well pulled off and the music was catchy, and even though most of them are just there to pad out the film, just the sheer spectacle of it it's worth it. The story was also interesting and it shows the switch from silent to talkie and how it impacted movie business in a really good way.
Though I don't think that The Dancing Cavalier would be an actual good movie, but whatever. It was fun.

Also seen Infernal Affairs cause it's been on my list for ages. It's not that insanely better than The Departed, but in many regards it's better than Scorsese's flick. For once there seems to be a lot more complexity to the characters and they are better defined. Especially the Boss guy. The ending is also much better. Though IA is melodramatic like hell. When SP Wong dies you get this sappy music and flashbacks, the whole thing just ruins the moment really there are other moments like this who just rob the feel of the scenes. Also in The Departed the backdrop is much better explained and you get to understand more of the Boston crime organization and police force.
Either way they both good movies worth a watch.

My shame list:

Punch-Drunk Love Does PTA make Adam Sandler a real actor?

High and Low Sounds like a Kurosawa take on Hitchcock's type of movie really.

It's a Wonderful Life Jimmy Stewart and Christmas!

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Return of the western spot.

Bridge Over River Kwai Three William Holden movies in a row.

Notorious Ingrid Bergman :swoon: and I hear Gary Grant is in this too, but who cares.

Some Like it Hot Men in drag and Marilyn Monroe. Yup.

The Maltese Falcon Never finished watching it.

Electronico6, watch Notorious

Solaris was an interesting concept and had some good moments, but it was way too slow for my liking. I'm usually not one to mind that so much, but the pacing was at a snail's crawl. 6/10

My List:

Girl Who Played With Fire: Only makes sense to put this on the list now

Twelve O'Clock High: I'm a fan of old war movies

The Basketball Diaries: There's something intriguing about watching a person fall from grace

Cronos: Another early del Toro work

Three...Extremes: Asian horror intrigues me after seeing a lot of interesting ideas ruined by Hollywood

Blood Work: I know it's not supposed to be among his best, but it's still Eastwood

The Informer: I understand this is a must-see

The Crazies (1973): I didn't even realize the new one was a remake until I randomly found this one on Netflix, and George Romero is a master of his craft

The Italian Job (1969): Never saw the original, but hear it's pretty good

Shadows: Another one I see on a lot of lists that I have yet to watch

Picked this randomly, I hate when I can't recommend something that I've seen.

The Exterminating Angel is both creepy and funny, a great criticism of the rich in a surrealistic style. The premise is interesting and Buñuel offers up some great imagery. It's like an amazing Twilight Zone episode, and I'm glad nothing is really explained. I can't say that I consider it a masterpiece, but it's definitely an excellent film.

1. It's a Wonderful Life - Seems like it might be too cheesy.

2. Singin' in the Rain - I guess I have to put this here after A Clockwork Orange used the title song so prominently. :zombie:Has been on list the longest.:zombie:

3. The Maltese Falcon - Another classic noir, haven't seen Bogart since Casablanca.

4. The Night of the Hunter - Actually had this for a week but never got around to watching it for some reason.

5. Scenes from a Marriage - Haven't watched anything by Bergman in a while.

6. The Exterminating Angel The Conformist - I wanna see the purdy pictures.

7. City of God - Going into this one fairly blind, which is rare since I somehow read the ending to every movie ever made.

8. A Woman Under the Influence - I got nothin'.

9. Badlands - Maybe I can watch all of Malick's films before the new one comes out.

10. Le Samouraï - This sounds...interesting.

Atheistdeals, A Woman Under the Influence was my favorite movie I've seen for this thread. I hope you like it.

I'm not sure why L'Atalante is so highly regarded. Jules, the first mate, was very funny, and the cats were cute, but I'm left wondering what makes this film a masterpiece. 2.5/5

Bed and Board
The continuing adventures of Antoine Doinel.
Before Sunrise
This gets a lot of praise, but I don't like Ethan Hawke at all.
Shock Corridor
Don't know too much about it.

Shadows

Alice
I've seen a few of Svankmajer's shorts and they are interesting.
Andrei Rublev
On the most lists. I know nothing about this other than that it is Tarkovsky and long.
That Obscure Object of Desire
Let's give another Bunuel a shot. I like the titles of his films.
The Idiots
I love von Trier, but I have a feeling this won't be nearly as good as most.
The Passion of Joan of Arc

Denham's does it!
TenSpadesBeTrump, prepare to be blown away by The Passion of Joan of Arc. Be careful, you might lose track of space and time.

gently caress YOU SCHOOL. Took me three weeks to find the time to watch

Lawrence of Arabia - As I can now compare a few of David Lean's films, I feel more confident in saying that despite their frequent brilliance, they struggle with tonal shifts, at times jumping from subtle, beautiful scenes to generic, utilitarian ones that are visually uninteresting and only advance the plot, with little cohesion between. It's understandable for these grand epics, but disappointing when surrounded by scenes so much more artfully handled. That being said, this film was pretty impressive. It's marvelously crafted, often jaw-droppingly gorgeous, and surprisingly ambiguous. I went in expecting a traditional character study, thinking the "WHO ARE YOU?" moment at the Suez Canal indicated that this was indeed the case, and was then shocked at how ambiguous and atmospheric it is. Lawrence is such an opaque character that the smallest details leap out in significance, like the indeterminate specks that appear on the horizon in the desert. I don't know that I'll watch it again anytime soon, but it's a hell of a film. 9/10

While waiting on an opening for Lawrence of Arabia, I also watched

Double Indemnity - Pretty much perfect. Wilder nails that Expressionistic minimalist look that lower budgeted films stumble onto, and really makes it sing. This film doesn’t just look grimy, it feels grimy. Sunset Boulevard is the Wilder film David Lynch usually acknowledges, but I see just as much of Double Indemnity in his work. That's a very good thing. 9.5/10

Updated:

2. Bringing Up Baby - I have no idea why I haven't seen this, I'm a fan of everyone involved.

3. City Lights - I've only ever seen The Great Dictator, but it was years ago. Bad, I know. I do love Buster Keaton.

6. L'atalante - I love visually creative silent films, and the couple of scenes I saw in a documentary once were gorgeous.

7. Modern Times - Ditto re: Chaplin.

8. Sansho the Bailiff - Ugetsu blew me away; I've been meaning to explore some more Mizoguchi.

10. Sunrise - Note for #6 applies here, too.

11. My Darling Clementine - The ever-promising 3 F's: Ford, Fonda, and...Walter Brennan, I guess.

12. Stagecoach - Another, more obvious Ford. I've held off on this because the images I've seen make it look less visually striking than his later work, but that's not really fair, I guess.

14. Jaws – Save for Close Encounters, I’ve never been a huge Spielberg fan, but it is a bit of a cultural touchstone.

15. Nashville – I loved McCabe & Mrs. Miller (we will not speak of Quintet), and this seems to be Altman’s most popular work.

Mission accomplished: The Godfather Part II - 9/10, Some Like it Hot - 9/10, The Battle of Algiers - 9.5/10, Double Indemnity – 9.5/10, Lawrence of Arabia – 9/10

Punch! Punch! Punch!

Aorist, give Modern Times a go. Very good movie.

Das Boot - True, these are the "bad guys," but that doesn't matter here. These are people, first and foremost, and it was an absolute thrill watching them perform their duty to the very end and see them evolve into men. This is an intense, claustrophobic, gripping film that feels about half as long as it actually is (I watched the 229 minutes director's cut). Time has never flown by this fast for me before. Fantastic movie that I wish I had watched sooner. 92/100

Speaking of its length, is the 293 minute version better than the director's cut?

New list:

Downfall - I've had this one on my netflix queue for a LONG time. Not sure why I keep demoting it.

Cinema Paradiso - I know very little about this.

The Great Dictator - I began watching this on TCM a long time ago and had to stop for some reason. I liked what I saw, and I really enjoy Chaplin.

The Apartment - I've seen two Wilder films and I love them both. So I'm sure I'll like this too.

On the Waterfront - I like Marlon Brando, so I have no hesitation to see this.

Grave of the Fireflies - Another highly praised anime I have not seen.

Cool Hand Luke - Looks good. Anxious to check it out.

Witness for the Prosecution - I know nothing about this one.

It Happened One Night - Clark Gable and Frank Capra? How can I go wrong?

Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans - One of my favorite films ever is Nosferatu, yet it remains the only Murnau film I've seen.

Wow, Bob, wow. Fire walk with me.
caiman, watch Downfall, it's really good.

Withnail and I is funny, sad and a little familiar.

I lived in a dumpy apartment for a year recently that was very much like Withnail’s and the Bruce Robinson based character’s (I read it was fairly autobiographical) apartment. It was a wild year, though these guys put me to shame...and themselves as well. I never drank lighter fluid.

At any rate, it’s a funny movie with great dialog and shenanigans. It maintains a depressing undertone throughout, though, so despite the whimsy there is sadness, which is how it seems Robinson remembers his friend Vivian (basis of Withnail). I think we all have friends like that to varying degrees.

UPDATED LIST:

1) Cronos – First blind buy blu-ray. Like Del Toro’s movies a ton, I even enjoyed Blade 2 more than the rest of the series (and I think I even saw it before I knew who Del Toro was). Excited for this.

2) Easy Rider - Rented it thrice and never found the time to watch. Not for lack of interest, just didn't happen.

3) The Lives of Others - Pretty recent but everyone and their dog seems to love this movie and I just haven't put forth the effort.

4) Amadeus - I know I'll like it and I'm embarrassed I haven't watched it.

5) The Killing of a Chinese Bookie - I've only seen Faces by Cassavetes and I wasn't impressed so I've been putting off a second chance. I imagine I'd like Faces more now, I think I was 18 when I saw it.

6) The Cranes Are Flying – No clue about this one except I own a copy and have never taken the time to check it out.

7) 12 Angry Men – Highest in IMDB top 250 I haven’t seen

8) Salo - I'm scared.

9) Fitzcarraldo – Love Herzog (that I’ve seen). Got this in the Herzog-Kinski box set but have only seen Nosferatu and Aguirre of the bunch.

10) In the Bedroom - I've owned it for years and just keep forgetting I have it.

Ratedargh- I give you 12 Angry Men, one of my favorites.

I watched "400 Blows", and thought it was fantastic. Maybe I still can be swayed to like more French cinema. A pretty sad movie, and the performance of the boy was excellent. I was reminded of "Bicycle Thief", which I think would make a nice depressing double feature with this.

My new list:

1. 8 1/2:
Watched the first 5 minutes, and turned it off for some reason, I think I wasn't in the right mood that night.

2. The Lives of Others:
I have never heard of it before, but it appears to have a high rating on IMDB.

3. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid:
More Paul Newman

4. The Great Dictator:
Now that I've seen some Chaplin, this is one that always interested me.

5. To Kill a Mockingbird:
Honestly I don't know much about it other then that it's a movie that exists and is supposed to be good

6. The Elephant Man:
It's Karl Pilkington's favorite movie, which is enough reason for me to check it out sometime

7. In Bruges:
I know nothing about this, but it seems to be highly rated.

8. Network:
I seem to keep hearing about this lately, but don't know anything about it.

9. Lawrence of Arabia:
The runtime kinda scares me

10. The Treasure of Sierre Madre:
I like some Bogey, but never saw this one.

Already watched: Jaws, Scenes From a Marriage, The Searchers, Fanny and Alexander, Sawdust and Tinsel, Stagecoach, Silence of the Lambs, Modern Times, Do the Right Thing, Schindler's List, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Magnolia, La Strada, Die Hard, Persona, Aliens, The Great Escape, Cool Hand Luke, 400 Blows

Before anything else, I loved the fake background settings of Notorious, they had their own personality and charm. I can imagine someone during production coming up to Hitchcock and say:
"Those are kinda fake sir."
"So?"
"That's all sir. Good day!"
Anyway, I actually loved Notorious. Ingrid(:swoon:) is amazing, Claude Rains is also fantastic and Leopoldine(the mother) was chilling, Gary Grant however felt like the weak link. I get it that is suppose to be a detached ice cold spy, but I found that Grant just went to far with it in a lot scenes, and creates this jarring contrast to Ingrid's more lively moments. But, meh, it's all around a great film, the ending is brilliant and there's a lot going in a thematic level in a serious way, in the same spirit of Vertigo or Rear Window. There's plenty of points to reflect and analyse making it more than just a ordinary spy movie, which I found enthralling.
Also I found it funny that for a 1946 movie, the main character is a drunk woman who has a past of sleeping with a lot of men.

My shame list:
