I'm trying my best to use these mech-crafting programs to make the least threatening/hilarious mech I can manage.

Sadly I have no imagination or experience with the game and software, so all I've come up with is a dual-combine wielding industrial mech that moves at what I think is a somewhat swift pace. If I could latch a 1 ton strawhat onto that somehow, my first design would be complete.

Edit: Huh. So wrecking balls are essentially one of the worst choices in weapons there are? Good to know.

Edit2: And machineguns apparently are as broken as everyone says, as replacing all my other equipment with that while keeping all the horrible choices still quadruples my damage output.

It took a little bit of research and along with some modeling and statistical analysis I have managed to confirm my suspicion that no one has ever been killed by an urbanmech. Just proffering the idea that a 30-ton, 2/3/2 battlemech could do anything but get popped like an overripe boil made several ditzy movies stars, young children and old senile people all treat me like an idiot. Even they know that urbanmechs are only useful as comic devices. I suppose, in some alternate reality, where the Nazis won WWII and Ringo was a really good drummer, and where Battletech was played in a manner wherein every fundamental rule was the opposite of what it is now, that perhaps, just maybe, an urbanmech may score a kill--but I doubt it.

Well, at least it would be cheap.

But that looks like a surefire way to lose a lot of experienced mech pilots. Unless the entire point of the mech is to weed out the pilots too dumb to realize what a deathtrap they've sat into.

The Awesome is one of the best L1 assault designs. Firepower-wise, it's a good (not great, but good) contender at long and medium range, but that's not its true specialisation. It's true specialisation is to survive insane amounts of damage while retaining combat capability. Maximum armor for a 80-ton Mech, no ammo and shitloads of strategically placed heatsinks to suck up critical hits. It's the archetypical Zombie-Mech.

RickVoid posted:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the rear firing laser on the Awesome actually make it a DickButt?

What rear-mounted laser? The Awesome has 3 PPCs and a small laser installed in the head. The small laser is basically a 0.5 ton crit-sink protecting more important things up there.

The heavy screech of the train’s brakes roused Snow from… not quite sleep, but something similar only far less restful. One didn’t sleep in an Assassin; and twice during the journey he’d had to surreptitiously sneak out the front hatch to stretch and take a quick, uncomfortably cold nap.

He shifted, trying to stretch muscles cramped by hours in the Assassin’s tight cockpit. With his left hand, he toggled on his passive radio receiver as he cracked open a pill bottle with his right. He downed the pills without looking, was unsurprised by the rush of amphetamines. His handlers hadn’t counted on him sleeping, but he had to be battle ready.

The passive receiver crackled—it wasn’t part of the Assassin’s standard equipment, and was quite fragile. It wasn’t intended to survive if his ‘Mech was destroyed. Neither was he. This mission was vital, he expected, or Heimdall wouldn’t have activated him. His position in the Lyran Guard—well, it didn’t much matter anymore.

The receiver crackled again, and a faint, androgynous voice began mid-sentence as it picked up a carrier. “—not damage the Heavy Snow Nightclub. Avoid unnecessary civilian casualties. Destroy the statue of Duke Lestade. Do not damage the Heavy Snow Nightclub. Avoid—”

The train ground to a stop, and Snow toggled his ‘Mech out of standby. A wave of heat flooded his cockpit, and Snow winced—it was far warmer than he was expecting. The Assassin’s engine was less than half a meter beneath his feet. Even his old Stinger had better shielding.

As his ‘Mech powered up, he knew his comm. system would start occasional broadcasts, simulating battlefield communications. It was encrypted—it was also garbage. He wouldn’t be speaking with the other members of Gulltoppr Lance. They all had a mission, however vague, and would fulfill it—or die in the attempt.

With a slow motion, he brought his Assassin to its feet and frowned. He’d been expecting snow, but the heavy fog that blanketed Tharkad City would make things difficult. Snow suppressed an involuntary shudder as Hail’s Javelin stood up behind him—the mottled gray camouflage blended almost perfectly with the fog, the only truly visible patch was the black spider adorning each ‘Mech.

The original plan had called for forces disguised as a House Kurita raiding party. Somehow, this updated disguise—based on the Gray Death Legion’s footage—seemed wrong.

The weather conditions make the current enemy forces very manageable. Both Stingers carry 2x Medium Lasers, and the Galleon carries a medium and two smalls. The Scorpion has an AC/5 and a machine gun, so it doesn't have the extra penalty the others do.
