Definitely need to check if the transmission problem has been fixed, there was a common issue with those gearboxes and it's a simple fix. Also, vacuum petcocks are problematic but you can bolt in manual valves from a XS650.

The SMC is the one you want though, 30 pounds lighter and more HP.

We're just ripping on idiot sellers. You recognized that the price was high on the SMC, besides that, you can usually get people to knock off up to 10-20% if you point out that it'll need a new chain, sprockets, tires, brake pads, etc. With newer model bikes theres a lot less to go wrong.

This is pretty tempting, they don't come up for sale too often around here and when they do they're usually $4-5k. Where does exhaust/hot cam fall into line in the mod department? I thought 3x3 and carb upgrades were usually the first steps, then cams if you wanted to spend some more. I thought exhausts were kind of a waste since you lost a lot of low and mid range which is what makes the DRZs fun to ride in the first place. http://williamsport.craigslist.org/mcy/2349739269.html But alas, my practical side will win out yet again Yellow if my favorite color of the SMs, too.

I'd be more curious why the engine was rebuilt at 3k, although if it's lasted until now it's probably fine. That's a reasonable price on one, I'd probably try to get him down to 3k. I don't like exhausts because they tend to bias the powerband upwards, especially if not properly dyno tuned, and even if they aren't biased upwards, they're usually loud as hell, and attracting attention is the last thing you want on a supermoto because chances are you'll be doing something that's questionably legal.
|
# ? Apr 28, 2011 19:53 |
Dirtbikes and sumo's should be loud for maximum hooligan enjoyment. If that attracts police attention you'll just have to be smarter about your wheelie locations.

He probably has a custom bike where the engine is from someone you've never heard of, the frame is a one off by some famous racer who doesn't even make frames, and the original in frame oil storage has been repurposed for smuggling copious amounts of ether. Obviously, he spends most of his time exploiting the delicate but extraordinarily profitable fluctuations of the underground ether market.

Someone tell me the downside so I don't waste more money on motorcycles.

Notice how the exhausts are pointed up at a funny angle, that's so while you wheelie everywhere you go they stay level with the road.. If you don't wheelie rain will get into them, or birds will poo poo into them. Why would they style them like that if they didn't want you to wheelie wherever you went?

UNFORSEEN DOWNSIDE TO OWNING A 690 SMC: When you fill it up with gas, and then wheelie away from the gas station, all your new gas leaks straight out of the back of the rear end-Tank filler. TERRIBLE FUEL ECONOMY.
