I was just talking to my friend -redacted but quoted-. She just got accused by Chris Hardwick of ripping off his ideas that he'd talked about on Nerdist. She made this http://hipster-animals.tumblr.com/ and it got popular on a bunch of sites this week and he contacted her to complain. She doesn't listen to podcasts. I guess he's comparing them to his Nerdimals idea from a couple of years ago where he hired someone do some nerd animals or something.

Oh Nerdist... why you gotta be like that?

That's stupid. Chris is kind of a douchebag and he's really not much of a nerd.

Like, I don't see how a really nerdy person would identify with him. He seems more like the kind of guy who goes "I like the X-Men movies, how nerdy am I? Huh? I'm such a nerd."

I don't think he's very funny at all, and really hate it when he guests on something I'm into. He always strikes me as a guy that tries too hard but just doesn't cut it, sort of like Redban on the Joe Rogan Experience.

I hated him on Doug Loves Movies, Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and I actually listened to a Nerdist podcast once because he had a guest I liked. And I hated that too.

Who said anything about hate? Why are you attributing that strong emotion to what we're saying?

I used to listen to his podcast a lot more, but I started to get tired of it when they did the host-ful episodes and never had much to say, and when they got guests on they didn't really engage them in an interesting way.

Also, I'm into nerdy culture, but saying "I watch Dr. Who" doesn't cut it as far as talking about nerdy things goes. I think it's just that he doesn't really sound passionate about anything.

Yeah the lady who did all that awesome 60sish Mad Men art was probably hurting for a solid creative idea like "Nerdimals".

I never realized Hardwick was the first to come up with funny-clothes-on-an-animal. Perhaps I'm not giving this guy enough credit, after all.

I grab his podcast very occasionally if a great guest is on (in strict interviewer mode, he's alright, and the cohosts are at least unobtrusively useless), but whenever he turns the comedy switch on*, I can't stand him. His DLM/Ferguson/etc appearances are just grating. He's too convinced that vulgarity and doing a nerd voice are funny in and of themselves, and has a tendency to -- rather than make jokes that fit into a discussion -- stop (read: shout over) everything to shoehorn in setups for his own punchlines.

*ie, takes a sudden jump to FULL VOLUME YELLING ABOUT loving poo poo PUSSY STAR WARS EXTERRRRMINATE gently caress.

I'm not saying he's a douchebag for it (dunno about this takedown incident), or not a good guy, just that other skills than comedic talent (affability, showmanship, looks) probably landed him his hosting gigs, and thus a higher profile in the comedy world than he'd otherwise warrant.

So are you implying that he shouldn't have confronted someone that he thinks may have copied something that he made/had made? (it's not just a bit, he has actual "nerdimals" art)

I'm sure she didn't copy him and he may have overreacted but everyone knows that people copy each other all the time, especially online.

I recently started listening to Nerdist again, not sure if I'll keep it up because I agree with most of the criticisms on here about him (Trying too hard to be nerdy etc.) There has been some pretty cool interviews though, I enjoyed the latest one with Andy Samberg

I honestly don't understand the criticism of "trying too hard to be nerdy." There are spectrums of nerdiness, I guess, but he seems genuine to me.

He certainly seems to be one of the more tech savvy nerds. Just because he doesn't watch star trek or star wars all the time doesn't mean he isn't what he is claiming to be.

Also, IMO, hipsters nowadays seem to be nerds that are popular and therefore can be cocky assholes. I definitely don't see Hardwick as an rear end in a top hat. :v:

I'm not implying anything. Apparently he did feel she was ripping off his 2 year old idea and contacted her about it. She felt she didn't because she'd never heard of Nerdimals and the idea of animals dressed as people is not in anyway new. I believe they have both moved on.

I don't think he's an rear end in a top hat or anything. I'm not saying he's too cool to be a nerd, I just think he relies on mentioning something "nerdy" to get laughs. For instance he'll just randomly reference doctor who in the middle of a conversation for seemingly no reason other than "aren't I sooo nerdy?"

You didn't earn poo poo, you liked a show. You don't watch things and read things you like because you bank on future 'cred', and you don't keep doing it when it's 'mainstream' because now it's cool, you do it because you enjoy it. Sorry if I sounded like I was questioning his "nerd cred", in fact I mean exactly the opposite. I feel like he is a nerd and a lot of his reference jokes aren't really jokes as much as they're just ways for him to get free laughs/cheers.

I listen to his podcast so obviously I like the guy, and I'm pretty sure I've laughed at plenty of the random reference jokes but the amount of times where it doesn't work for me is pretty high. (even though I am a fan of doctor who etc.)

Also he grew up with Wil Wheaton

edit: I feel like maybe if it were a live show I wouldn't notice it and would more than likely enjoy it. But on a podcast that I listen to twice a week it gets old, like one would get tired of someone who keeps repeating memes/catch phrases.
