Yeah. With (most) d&b no one is going to be writing about how there's a perfectly placed major 7th or something. It's going to be more 'this track makes me feel like I'm flying' or 'this track makes me stomp around like Godzilla'.

I mentioned THAT aspect 'cause I'd been seein' a lot of talk like that (not on the classical music level, but on the producer level, I guess) on the dubstep thread.

I don't hate techstep, but I think most other D&B is much more interesting. For example, techstep could be used to score one part of a movie / video game / etc. really well, but that's about it. If you used it for the entire thing, it would get pretty grating. Whereas other D&B (liquid, for example), can be used in multiple different ways.

Heyyyyyy, isn't it technically Friday already? I'll just post mine now then :3:

Friday 5: Tracks To Drive To Edition

1) Logistics - Murderation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtSxCq5szRc
For some reason, I just heard this one for the first time the other day. I don't know why it took me so long to hear it, but it's so drat perfect for a certain mood and I've been driving to it the past few days in a row because it just hits all the right notes when driving down empty stretches of normally-busy streets at night.

2) Netsky [ft. Darrison] - Escape
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfVuJ1bIcbg
I know I put this in the OP already, but it'd be a sin for me to not put it in this 5. Whenever I hear the drop in this song, I feel the need to go as fast as possible. That's why I usually listen to this album when I drive down the interstate at night so I can pull off going 90 or something like that while listening to this. loving thrilling and unmatched combination in my eyes.

3) Evol Intent - Middle Of The Night
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSSDHBOPhhs
I'd group this one in with Netsky's Escape, since it gives me a pretty similar feeling. I don't think it gets me as much as it used to, but that's probably because this was the original drum & bass driving song for me. I started driving in 2008 soon after Era Of Diversion came out, so I wore this track the gently caress out by listening to it like every week or something crazy like that and accelerating when it dropped, just like with Netsky. This one will always hold a special place in my heart.

4) Invisible Man - Timezone 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxFvrBHiTc8
Okay, this one's completely different. Instead of getting me pumped the gently caress up and wanting to go faster, this one I just kind of space out to. Not that I don't concentrate on the road when I hear it, but...I don't really know how to explain it other than I get lost in it. It's like a ten minute long trance I go into that's kind of weird to snap out of because it goes on for longer than most d&b tunes. Great to listen to when I don't want to think about anything else but the road and the simple yet effective melody of this song. It's the first track on Tayla's Soul Survivors, one of the first d&b albums I was ever introduced to. The mix is one of my all-time favorite electronic music mixes overall, but this just sets the stage for it so well. I wouldn't have started it any differently had I been mixing.

5) The Upbeats - Nobody's Out There
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ai59dIRZuRA
Another one I consider a classic. Listening to this during inclement weather is the best. In fact I distinctly remember a couple years ago that it was raining so hard that a lot of the major streets flooded and I was driving home in that while listening to this song. My wipers were going nuts and I was only going about 5MPH at most, but there were a ton of cars stalled on the sides of the roads and it was just so...pre-apocalyptic feeling. The floods subsided a couple hours later so it didn't turn out to be a major event or anything, but in those moments when I was listening to this and driving through all that chaos (even as slowly as I was), it felt otherwise.

If you're talking about driving to DnB, it's got to be rollers:

Bad Company - The Nine
Love it or hate it, it makes me want to drive 90 miles per hour all the time.

Matrix - Tightrope
I love dropping this one in a set. People never see it coming and it always kills.
(I was going to put Sleepwalk, but that one is more well known) It's got a nice break in the middle for mixing and overlapping basslines and really is all a song needs to be in this genrea, Awesome Drums and Awesome Bass.

Dom & Roland - Parasite
Kind of a personal for me and a softball, but I love the saw bassline and heavy drums. Nobody has really made any tracks that have the atmosphere of Dom's. Futuristic and dystopic, heavy and skittering all in one song with really not much fluff around them. There aren't really any songs like this anymore. For a bonus, listen to Dom's Industry album if you haven't. You will be blown away.

Sparfunk & Joe Solo - Rapture
No explanation, just an absolute stormer with no apologies. The changeup is brilliant, as well.

Ram Trilogy - Titan
Another Ram track. Sue me. If you don't get the desire to speed when you listen to this you have no soul. This is an absolute truth. Most of you have heard this, I'm sure, so I won't go into too much detail.

Five for the road:
  • Loadstar - "BLVD" (Ram Records)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMPUjg8nNAA

So far I am digging this new project from Lomax & Xample, feel it's a bit different from their earlier collaborations. This one not only has a road related title, but it's some late night drive business.

  • Dose - "Reason Being" (Samurai Music)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUygDcm0ByA

The sub pushes this along, has the frantic pace I'd want for a long drive.

  • Commix - "City Section" (Exit Records)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC5vcgQDXng

This is more for the slow drive, say through a city just after a quick rain shower, with the road that shiny wet that reflects the lights.

  • Technical Itch - "Stack 3 (Hive Remix)" (Tech Itch Records)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MiKdlXF8Lk

The intro with the Bob James - "Nautilus" samples and then the tense arpeggio that comes in, think of the tension at the start of a race or at a stoplight, and then it drops and you're off. The main chunk of the track is just move move move.

  • Universal Project - "The Glock" (Universal Project Records)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSFYIxZ_pqc

I can't find a full version online, so skip to 01:20. Wu Tang samples, another tense arpeggio and then it kicks off. Drive fast. Real fast. Just don't road rage on anyone.

I realise every music nerd must groan about this but I have to say that I think out of all the genres youtube completely castrates drum and bass (or at least the stuff I like).

I was trying to get together some tunes I wanted to share and it was depressing. Nothing sounds worse than a dillinja track via youtube (just try it).

I'm a big fan of the more "liquid" stuff but there doesn't seem to enough out there for my liking (otherwise I might consider that as a new genre to DJ). If anyone else here uses themixingbowl.org, there's a great user mix on there that still has seeds (CCM - 1st the Worst). I guess this guy really likes Lenzman; I do too. Quite a few years ago I saw LTJ Bukem and Makoto along with this diva MC, that was pretty fun.

Oh can anyone explains what VIP means in this context? I see that after quite a few dnb tracks, but I don't think it refers to an artist.

Atlantic Connection & Lynx - Dangerzone
Lenzman - Fade Away
S.P.Y - Elite Squad
Random Movement - Cant Resist (S.P.Y Remix)
Lenzman - Bittersweet
Lenzman - Bittersweet Part 2
Lenzman - Rags To Riches
Big Bud - Diggit
Lil'London - Good For Your Health (ATP Remix)
Undersound - The Extra Mile
Robot Redford - Dying Star
Big Bud - Want You So Bad
Lenzman - Lose You (VIP)
Bonobo - The Keeper (Redeyes Remix)
BCee - Diagnosis Murderer
Mutt - Conversations
Calibre - Rockafella
ATP - Be Mine
Calibre - All You Got
Makoto - And I love Her

It can mean "variation in production" or it's a special version of the track for VIP's. Special in that it might have a vocal specific for that DJ (old "Super Sharp Shooter" VIPs that spelled out the DJs name), or only a few people will ever have it (like Hive's other version of "Mass Hysteria" that only he and the Bad Company guys seemed to have).

I'm a little late to the party too, but a lot of awesome tunes have been posted. Stuff by Metrik is awesome - subfries already got BLVD which is an amazing tune in my book, especially to drive to.

Mattix & Futile - "Corkscrew"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMSkJivXbHM
This song just gets me extremely pumped up. I think it could easily fit into next week's theme too though. The build up is tremendous. I am not familiar with much of Mattix & Futile's work, but this song is intense.

DC Breaks - "Take That"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf0tRwOlu9c
This song starts slow and chilled out, but that changes pretty quickly. Awesome for a night cruise, to get you in the partying mood.

DJ Fresh & Sigma - "Lassitude"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMny1jIfKU4
The song starts with a solid "Get on your marks.." and gets me going. Usually can pick up my mood no matter how I am feeling. I wasn't a fan of much off of the latest album by DJ Fresh besides Hypercaine, but this song is awesome too.

Phetsta - "Prism"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBPHLUOEghM
Another awesome one that starts out mellow but quickly grows intense. Makes me want to get out of town and just drive.

Delta Heavy - "Space Time"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJ7sA189W0Y
Lots of people probably recognize this track from the killer opening to Andy C's Nightlife 5. This is another track that just demands you break the speed limit. After all, there's not speed limit in SPACE.

In addition to my (late) Friday 5, I wanna give a plug to an up and coming DJ going by the name of Switch Fusion. I am pretty sure I read that the kid is only 18, and he's producing some awesome stuff. His latest track, Mercenary, just dropped (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynQIQgdHmeo). It's got a free download on his soundcloud and stuff. It's really synth-heavy liquid drum and bass, and I love it.

I really enjoy this. It could benefit from being a couple minutes shorter, but it's still awesome.

I've tried my hand at making drum n bass before, and while in some ways I think I succeeded and in other ways I failed, I'd really like to make some synth-heavy stuff like this myself. I think I'd be alright at it.

I'm kind of interested in trying a dnb mix at some point. Right now I do house-ish stuff around 125 bpm and I do pretty well at it (though I'm not great or anything). How much of learning curve should I expect switching from 4/4 to a breakbeat and ending up in the 170-180 bpm range? I also noticed the tracks are shorter on average compared to 4/4 stuff, which would make mixing a bit more difficult in that regard as well.

I'm mainly interested in the liquid stuff, so I'm also looking for what kind of labels really stand out for that sound. The ones I can think of so far are:

Hospital
Shogun Audio
Spearhead
Toolroom

Well guys, I'm not one to get all hyped up for the summer - it's fun and all, don't get me wrong - but i have just 3 days of school left in my senior year of high school, so there is a little reason to celebrate I spose.

So with that, let me reign in the fun with a few new-ish summer tracks for you to enjoy.

Just found this thread and wanted to say thanks for all the great suggestions. To contribute back, here's my "driving 5". You'll probably notice I'm a big fan of liquid tunes with driving chords...

Cyantific - Cover Story (Featuring Matrix)
http://youtu.be/wk33MSXK4B8?hd=1
A bit repetitive, but I love how the bass line works with the melody.

London Elektricity - Remember The Future
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG3un0g4Fuk
Love the harmony in the vocals.

Matrix and Futurebound - Coast to Coast (Ft. Louis Smith)
http://youtu.be/S6GbfftD_L8?hd=1
If this goes on when I'm driving my speed instantly goes up 15mph

New Zealand Shapeshifter - Sleepless (B-Complex remix)
http://youtu.be/ItuIuLqCFeI?hd=1
This ones a bit more mellow, but the drums in this on are phenomenal.

High Contrast - Racing Green
