Remember The Future is great, that long with Nu:Tone - Seven Years (Matrix Remix) always strikes me as dnb that would be popular in the mainstream if it got the radio play like Danny Byrd is lately.

He was in Radio 1 normal rotation with his last 2 singles, heard them quite a bit. Dunno why out of the Hospital artists he was first to have this happen.

I think the first might have been High Contrast actually. It coincided with dnb becoming popular with students because of Pendulum and Chase & Status at any rate.

As a side note, one of the themes on George Galloway's TalkSport programme is the intro to Red Mist.

Of course it'd be the UK...the only way you'd hear that poo poo on american airwaves is through some College Radio Station with a savvy enough dj on at the right time. (Which I actually experienced when I lived in Houston, TX...I caught a show like that that was broadcasting from Rice University like, every Friday night, I believe.)

I think both threads would consider it d&b.

And yes, it's a loving banger. I was not a fan at all until I heard it in a club, and then...WHAM. Meaty as gently caress.

Edit: I know it's not friday, but whatever. Everyone post a song that 'you REALLY have to hear on a big system'.

My vote:

Skeptical - Cold One (Jubei Remix)http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4SuoPP-xWQ

Combination of THAT growling noise, the loving enormous monster sub, and the snappy little drums. This song makes me go loving mental and it's one of my favourite tracks to play out and to just slam into a mix out of nowhere.

Yes. This is an enormous tune, easily one of my top 5 favourites from the past year

as for tunes that you have to hear on a big system...

massive VIP remix of Break & Die's 'Slow Down' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPUOi_eCOdU

That bass note at 0:27 will blow you away. Friction double dropped this with Fresh - Signal at the last shogun audio night in London and it destroyed the place. complete dancefloor devastation.

also this: Blokhe4d - Kisses and Lies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kupEMO6FGzo

The bit between 0:26 and 0:48 sounds RIDICULOUS on a big system. Honestly even listening to it on top notch headphones doesnt compare in the slightest. One of the guys from blokhe4d finished a renegade hardware night about a year ago with this tune and ive never seen so many melting faces on the dancefloor.

As an aside, what is it about the techy/darker side drum and bass that turns you euphoric-synth-driven-liquid fans off? I would love to see more of you guys get into it!

I don't know about the absolute best of 2010 because there were quite a few bangers, but it's definitely up there.

And I guess what defines it as being drum n bass is that it appeared on Andy C's Nightlife 5 mix.

Also, it's vastly superior to Rusko's original, which sounds boring as hell in comparison.

What defines it as drum & bass is the fact that it's 174 bpm. d&b is a tempo, not a drum pattern :)

I played a set last night on the District Pulse radio show on https://www.deepviberadio.com with fellow L.A. local Drum & Bass DJ Ian Hayes aka Lights Out!

http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/14323128

I was a little nervous/overzealous on a couple transitions as it was my first time playing on a broadcast but overall I am happy with the mix. Ian on the other hand absolutely KILLED it. Badass track selection and incredible mixes and transitions. I hope I can get a chance to play more with him in the future and book him for some of our local parties.

Was an awesome experience, even if I look like an overly animated tool throughout parts of the recording :D

The set list;

Nail in the Coffin - Terravita
Drinks Up Hands Up - Terravita
Sabotage - Metrik & Futurebound
Take It Back feat Enter Shikari - The Prototypes Remix - The Qemists
Last Night - Brookes Brothers
Brave New World - Metrik & Futurebound
Friendly Intentions - Noisia
Awkward - Inside, Sw@t
Meatball - EZ Rollers
Painkiller - Noisia Remix
Rock It - Sub Focus
Midnight - Uncut feat. Future Cut & Jenna G
Take The Stairs - Delta Heavy
We Can Have It All (Sigma Remix) - Danny Byrd

Aggressive styled Drum & Bass that would seemingly complement a fight scene in a movie ridiculously well. Corkscrew by Mattix & Futile is one of my favorites right now and it could kind of be considered a little darker. I like some Noisia tracks - Shellshock and Friendly Intentions right now. I like just what you said about it. It's euphoric and really makes you wanna jump around and just have fun. I just don't get the same effect from the plain jane poo poo. Poon by Sub Zero for example. I completely agree with you about Sub Zero - Poon. That tune is shite and I really dont know why people are bumming it at the moment.

Fair enough though :) haha its funny how we hear the same tunes and come to completely different conclusions. I guess thats the nature of music... for me the euphoric stuff sounds really plain. For example, this tune that you posted a little while ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpimMg3ygbc

is a great example of the kind of tune that bores me to tears. There's no groove to make me want to dance, no swing, no interplay between the bass and drums in the track. In a lot of these euphoric liquid tracks i feel like the drums are almost just a framework to play a big melodic synth over rather than playing any meaningful part in the track.

On the other hand I can definitely see how you would think a lot of the dark/minimal stuff is plain! There's a lot of fairly dry stuff out there.

The simple reason for this is because dnb used to be purely about, funnily enough, the drums and the bass. Nowadays mainstream dnb simply isn't - there's a drumloop there to dictate the tempo, and you'll get the odd wobble, but the focal point of the tunes is the melody. It's why you'll hear derisory comments about it being too much like house and trance.

"Without You" - Original Sin (For those fight scenes where a lot of running, parkour-style, on rooftops is involved.)
"Rhyno" - Receptor (For those fight scenes that are in some "underground tournament" settings...probably against some serious opponents.)

Fight Scene Friday 5

1) Noisia - Exorcism
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctyFJRQXJjs

I could see this working for something cyberpunk, or for a single person vs. an entire army fight, like the Crazy 88 in Kill Bill or something similar.

2) Phace & Misanthrop - Desert Orgy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEudg6bInpE

Space Western. I mean, that's kind of a given with the name of the track and the Western-style guitars, but still.

3) Black Sun Empire - Firing Squad
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w12r2kJLB14

This gives off a Death Star "fight til you get to the end" vibe for me.

4) Concord Dawn - Morning Light VIP
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhqgDuaIRHw

This one's like an "all hope is lost but keep fighting through the sunrise" kind of tune.

5) Dillinja - How Dare You
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu8eum6abow

This paints more of a Gears of War style "there's poo poo going on all around so take cover and peek out to shoot when you can" picture.

Here's my poor attempt at a Friday 5. Believe it or not, I actually had a bit of a hard time coming up with 5 tracks for this off the top of my head, so I had to go through some of my stuff and visualize a fight scene with each one. Which led to an incredibly fun afternoon actually. Got zero work done, but meh, who cares...it's Friday!!

Dieselboy - Invid - I can totally picture the scene starting off where someone enters a dark warehouse type area all alone and in the background you start to see the "villains" appear. You see the "hero" start to get nervous. He gathers himself. Then it drops and all poo poo breaks loose!!

Original Sin - Overfiend - Aggressive dark alley fight scene. Nice and smooth drop that builds up very nicely. I love the middle slow down after the first "fight" is finished and then it drops again for the final battle.

Sub Focus - Juno - I can picture like an epic spaceship battle scene - ala Star Wars or something. It's that horn that does it for me. Like the announcement of their impending doom.

Bad Company - Planet Dust - This one probably fits the fight sequence of the spaceship battle scene better.

Reaperz - Total Annihilation - Speaks for itself. I can pretty much place a lot of Reaperz tracks into a fight/battle scene some how.

I could probably agree with that remix that I had posted. It is definitely my favorite remix of the song, but I like Trance and House too (though hardly to the extent I like Drum & Bass, these days) and Eric Prydz is one of my favorites. I can't think of any D&B remixes of songs off the top of my head that I don't care for at least a bit. I am just a fan of Metrik, and I appreciate the remix.

Those first 2 tracks are pretty much what I am talking about though. Bass lines are great and all, but to me, you can't just have an awesome bass line and thus an awesome song. It's just not my flavor.

As for those other 4 - they are all pretty awesome in my book. I recognized Snorkel from Nightlife 5 when I started to listen to it - I like that one. I also like some of Spor's stuff - The Resistance and Supernova are 2 of my favorites. I like the Noisia tunes also. Stigma does bear striking resemblance to Corkscrew. Or maybe I should say it the other way around. Regardless - I don't dislike all dark stuff. Just the more simplistic stuff.

I've heard it referred to as drum and 'mid range'.

In the mid 90's d&b was a really exciting genre, people into it at the time were convinced it was going to be incredible. It progressed so much over that decade then ground to a halt around the 00 mark.

Nothing over the last 10 years has innovated, just re hashing the same formulas. I think some creative spark was syphoned off into dub step and other things.

I still love drum and bass, but I think it could have been so much more. The most interesting tunes are from the mid 90's on reinforced and metalheadz.

Never been to Belgium
I have to admit I never really poke my head into this D&B thread, but over in the newly titled UK Bass thread there was talk of this Friday Five thing that sounded interesting, and since I love Jungle I thought why not. I mostly own and like Jungle that was made in 93-94. This was when so much progress was made to the sound. Something from early 93 could sound widely different to summer 93. This was before the influx of so much Ragga Jungle(not that Ragga Jungle was bad, but too often you'd find some quickly knocked up thing with a Ragga star spitting over a chopped Amen. Boring and predictable) and before the mutation into Tech Step and the subsequent deforestation to pave way for the foundations what is now known as modern Drum & Bass. It seems like most people just post a list, but those who've had the misfortune to see my posts elsewhere know I just like to ramble on and on and on so I'm not going to do that. Hope that's okay!

Now to start off I'd present Lennie De Ice. You'll know him - or you should know him, if you don't for shame! - for probably the first proto-Jungle tune We R I.E. But no one really knows him afterwards, were he ran the Armshouse and later Do Or Die labels and put out belters such as this tune - Make A Difference. Samples from We R I.E. float through the track, the Hardcore sound still in the mix with those uplifting digital hoovery organy sounds, but just enough ruffneck samples cut through the track to remind you that you ain't in safe white boi Houseland no more.

Now where would Jungle be without Ibiza Records. This label put out so many good Hardcore tracks during 91-92, but they all had that vibe that would be pivotal in creating the Jungle scene. These tracks and this label, as far as I'm concerned, are endemic to the Jungle scene. Of course they didn't stop in 92, continuing for years and sprouting off labels like 3rd Party and Kemet not to mention pushing far, far too many Potential Bad Boy records. From 1993 I give you DJ Genisis & Kenny X - Wheel The Bass. Again another perfect meld of Hardcore and early Jungle. Pitched up vocals("You abandoned me", pretty much the Jungle scene telling the mainstream folk who said it was poo poo to gently caress off) that suddenly melt into pounding breaks and dark hoovers with Ragga chanting over it.

Time to taste the future with A Guy Called Gerald. Another initial pioneer in the Jungle sound(try and pick up his Sunshine EP released as a white on Columbia shortly before they dropped him). This is one of the guys Goldie loved and tried to emulate, plus I get my username from a track of his so hey! Darker Than I Should Be(also known on his excellent Black Secret Technology album as Alita's Dream) remains one of my favourite tunes of all times. Way too dense Jungle with kicks that just sound like crackling electricity and sonar beeps and bloops that just make the track seem as wide and deep and black as the Atlantic. Jazzy trumpets just round off sheer bliss.

Flytronix - Shadowlands. Hope you've been smoking the crack for this one. As if the Predator 2 samples didn't put you in a dark place, the darkness of the rest of the track will. Deep, haunting, rolling tune with a bass and drumline line only punctuated now and then by beeps, fizzing pads and yet more Predator 2 samples.

Finally I'll chuck in some 4hero for good measure. Talk Around Town is an album track off their second album Parallel Universe, on the mighty, mighty Reinforced Records, one of the premier Jungle labels of the day. Largely picked because I absolutely love 4hero, but also partly to remind folks that no matter what, chances are we'll never be as intricate, jazzy, soulful or skilled in production as these guys. But that's okay, the world needs it's street sweepers and/or warm up acts as well.

Rude & Deadly - Mash Them Down (Smokey Joe Remix)
THE song that got me into jungle/dnb. An absolutely massive tune which for me really nails down the whole early genre. It's got mashed drum cuts and standard 2/4 beats with awesome sampling. I LOVE at the end of the song the playing of the sampled minor-key keyboard stabs. Beautiful, and I listen to it often.

Bagga Worries & Jooxie Nice - Legalize (Remarc Rmx)
From the song that got me into the genre to the first song I ever heard in the genre. I still love the intro to this one and the drum edits are pretty tops. I was ecstatic when Planet Mu re-released lots of Remarc's classics, including this one, which I snapped up on release day.

Conquering Lion - Code Red (Wild Apache Rmx)
A classic that's just a buckwild samplefest and feel good bass and drums. A real 'rudebwoy' couple of moments.

Marcus Intalex - What Ya Gonna Do
A real good oldschool track without huge reggae influence but still maintains that skittering feeling of the moment. And all deep at the same time!
