I've been replaying Come Back Clammy Lammy by Cardiacs over and over again. The stuff from about 1:50 - 2:50 nearly perfectly represents everything I love about music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNkQgF11wHA I find a lot of punk music extremely boring, but please tell me there's more stuff like this out there. Keep in mind that I am pretty burnt out on early 80s new wave stuff like Devo and Oingo Boingo HateTheInternet fucked around with this message at 20:56 on Apr 30, 2011 |

Stuff similar to Mike & Rich - Bu Bu Bu Ba ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thg0ucNEHJ4 I listen to a pretty decent amount of ambient / chillout / downtempo / whatever but this has a really different sound and feel, and actually more chilled out sound than most of those stuff I've heard in those genres. (actually I guess off the top of my head, some Freescha stuff comes pretty close) bomblol fucked around with this message at 05:00 on May 1, 2011 |

This man here: http://www.reverbnation.com/ronziai Is pretty drat good. His playing style is rather progressive with some neo-classical flourishes added. Basically if you like metal and like proggy stuffy then you'll like this. Same goes for this man here with the exception of his work being a bit heavier and no vocals: http://www.reverbnation.com/tonyrohrbough Tony is a pretty good friend of mine and if you get the chance you should check out his work in Byzantine: http://www.myspace.com/byzantine (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

Crosspostin' from the "Where do I start with...?" thread, just in case: The Allman Brothers Band? I don't know much about them at all. The Derek Trucks Band? I have Already Free and Roadsongs but I'd like to get into some of Derek's more eastern/qawwali-influenced stuff, something less song-focused, if that makes sense. Ali Farka Touré? I have Talking Timbuktu with Ry Cooder but that's all. I'd also love any suggestions for earlier blues musicians like John Lee Hooker, Son House, Memphis Minnie, Blind Willie Johnson etc - I'm guessing collections will be the way to go.

Who are some artists that have done interesting things with classical music samples? I'm already familiar with Murcof and the Drakengard soundtrack. Alternatively, recommend the most gripping, terrifying orchestral music you can think of. I already listen to Stravinsky and Varese.

It's highly unlikely that I'll have heard of anything you suggest. I think you'd really like Goldenhorse. Check out their first two albums, Riverhead and Out Of The Moon. Another couple of groups that fit the bill are the Brunettes and the Tokey Tones. The former group had stuff released overseas. Both groups can be found on Li'l Chief Records. Wagner has had a tremendous influence on music. Are you a fan of John Williams? The soundtrack to Star Wars is lifted almost entirely from Wagner's use of the leitmotif in his Ring Cycle. So I stopped keeping up with new rap releases when my internet died out in the summer of 09 and I totally realized its been so long that I don't know what I've missed and I don't know where to start. I think the newest releases I've heard were the last couple Rick Ross albums (which I liked a lot), UGK 4 Lyfe (it wasn't so good), and the Burrprint 2 (it was ok). FWIW I don't like any based, college weed raps (Wiz Khalifa and poo poo) or Wolf Gang related stuff. I do on the other hand like Hypnotized/Triple 6 style stuff and what little Lex Luger I've heard. So what are a few good tapes/albums I missed out on?

I'm a huge Black Sabbath fan (Ozzy & Dio eras). Does anyone have any suggestions for similar-sounding music for me to check out? Anything remotely close to the Black Sabbath album (in particular, Behind the Wall of Sleep,) would be terrific. I'm a bass player, so anything like Geezer Butler's funky sound would be groovy.

If you want something that's not pure chiptune but has Punk/Metal influences (specifically Electric guitar and Vocals) Try Horse The Band (Their EP "Pizza" is somewhat of a surreal concept album bordering on parody but it's still great), You Love Her Cos She's Dead and Colonopenbracket

I'm looking for a good place to start with traditional (I don't really know if that's the most accurate word to use) Arab/Persian music. Anything similar to this specific Electric Wizard insrumental? Not really a huge fan of actual stoner / sludge stuff but this kind of spacey, slow, bass-heavy stuff with psychedelic guitarwork I find awesome. I'd wager at least some late 60s or 70s progressive rock bands did something like this but sadly I haven't found anything similar yet. Some post-rock bands (like Red Sparowes) come close but I think they often lack the feel of a jam I'm looking for. Something like slowed down Ozric Tentacles but less tacky. I don't mind vocals as long as they're not death metal growling.

They have rockin songs (Lemmy from Motorhead was their bassist before he formed Motorhead) and they have jams with a ridiculous amount of sonic experimentation. Hawkwind The Golden Void Spiral Galaxy Master Of the Universe is probably their most famous song after Silver Machine I've only listened to their first 4 or 5 albums and they're all very good and similar, the first one isn't so good, its just mediocre Syd Barret-era Pink Floyd imitation. Warrior on the Edge of Time and In Search of Space are my favorites, I don't think I could pick between the two. Nektar are pretty good too, here's a good chunk of the only album of there's I've heard Journey to the Center of the Eye. The singer likes to repeat the phrase "while my _____ gently weeps" a lot. Eloy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V6vPTOMmWA Amon Duul II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr7uXibfdMw The improv songs on this album are all killer killer killer, the other songs are all right though. I'm just beginning to dig into this style myself, so I can only give you a few recs. Stick with Hawkwind for a while though if you like it, I can listen to Warrior On The Edge of Time and In Search of Space over and over again.
