Of course the problem with attributing Regan with the fall of Communism, is it assumes he has, as president control of economies that if were true, would prevent any recession from happening ever and our glorious economy would not only trickle down it would rain money on Tuesdays.

Wait, you mean Obama IS responsible for all this economic mess and that's why Bush immediately shut up after Nov 2nd 2008, because he lost his Regan Powers?!

True, I guess he took a couple chunks out of the wall. But lots of people did. Maybe we should send send Obama to Pakistan and have him throw some USA gang signs in front of the compound.

Edit: And everyone knows real men use pick-axes. Reagan's got a chisel. What kind of poo poo is that?

Forget 'more credible than,' I always get a kick out of seeing 'law student' because whoever wrote that crap for some reason believes that they should be accorded any credibility, whatsoever. Most of the lawyers I met when working as a paralegal I wouldn't consider 'credible' when it comes to stuff like this, let alone the numerous law students I've met who've convinced me beyond all doubt that changing my mind about going to law school after I had already submitted all of my applications was the best decision I ever made (excepting, perhaps, knocking up my wife).

If we just divvy it up by Red state v Blue state, given the enormous disparity between money tax $ contributed to the Fed between the two, Redstateland will have every chance of collapsing into a psuedo-3rd world nation within a year. I'm totally alright with this. Then we can be all like, "Foreign aid? How many jobs will all this create? How will any of this help the economy get going again? Or is claiming to focus on jobs secret GOP code for "pander to our base with social wedge issues and culture war fronts"?

So I posted this in a note on my profile and got the following response from someone who is well educated and whom I respect though often disagree with:

Facebook Buddy posted:

rape: I agree that the feds shouldn't be making rules about what kinds of health services should be provided and which shouldn't, however to suggest that we should expect a political organization to be apolitical in any moment meets the definition of insanity. Paul Ryan's plan for a voucher system would not specify which services would fall within the purview of medicaid. That idea, to extend liberty to those on government welfare by transforming bureaus into transfer machines, should be afforded to all people. want to abolish this political maneuvering? minimize politicians' discretion, unless you think it's possible to abolish Republicanism.

net neutrality: is only 'neutral' by name. giving an office the power to control content on the internet is a bad idea mostly because there has never been a reason do to it. the law, in general, is necessarily reactive to preserve personal autonomy. if we legislated against every theoretical danger, we would have a country full of paternalists. I don't like that idea, especially when at any moment the people could elect a John McCain or Mitt Romney to office.

federal mandates: are different from rights afforded everyone under the 14th amendment. mandates are usually optional interventions in which the feds essentially say that they don't want experimentation and variety. they assume that they are smarter than the millions of people within the states who know their particular situation better than a remote office manager. it was states' rights that allowed desegregation and it will be states' rights that allow further liberation of LGBTs and other hated minorities (for example). One master plan is one master's plan.

union rights: unions don't have a right to force free persons (who want to sign contracts with companies under their own terms, both parties agree with) to have to join their organization in order to participate in a common profession. this is not a 'right.' individuals should be allowed to join together all they want under the 1st amendment and form whatever group or company. the question is: should these groups be able to force non-participants into joining them? I support the general direction of "anti-union" repeals which say individuals shouldn't be forced to associate with people they don't like or of whom they disapprove.

minimum wage: setting the lowest price at which labor can be purchased ensures unemployment rates that are higher than market. I need only refer you to the Hong Kong example in which unemployment was a seasonally adjusted 1.3% in 1991 and 7.3% in 2002 under a new regime of minimum wage courtesy of the Chinese govt. set a minimum price for anything and you will find a surplus, and artificially killing others' prospects is immoral.

Wondering what would be the best things to cite in response to this. Also, I totally agree with that splitting up the union email, that sounds fantastic.

The states were so good with the civil rights movement that the federal government had to send in the national guard, multiple times to enforce the law.

And trust us when we tell you that the casualties of your revolution will pale compared to those you will suffer should we be forced to invoke Clause 3!

2. Please pay SPECIAL attention to the word “domestic” in number 1.

3. The MINUTE we become privy to firm, corroborated intelligence that you have plans to harm the United States or one of our recognized allies — or, worst case — DO, in fact carry out such an operation, the United States and any such allies who wish to assist will come to you and request that you cease and desist. If you refuse to do so, we will TURN MOST OF YOUR LAND INTO A SMOKING RUIN. If you’ve never seen RUBBLE BOUNCE, it’s quite a sight. Just as the Japanese saw that in 1945, we saw a good bit of that on 9/11 – and will never forget it. The Japanese never forgot it – and neither will those of you who survive! We include in this list of threats AIDING, ABETTING, HARBORING, TRAINING OR SUPPLYING THOSE WHO, ALTHOUGH NOT CITIZENS OF YOUR NATION, MAKE PLANS TO HARM US OR AN ALLY.

We wish to live and have peaceful, honest and fair trade with all peoples — BUT harm us or injure/kill American/allied citizens AND YOUR WORLD AS YOU HAVE KNOWN IT WILL SIMPLY GO AWAY — FOREVER. No more PC “Nation Building” crap. Our military will be employed ONLY for those tasks for which they have been traditionally trained throughout history: TO KILL ENEMY TROOPS AND DESTROY ENOUGH OF THE ENEMY’S “STUFF” TO CAUSE THEM TO QUIT THE FIGHT. If some of you think we need “Nation Builders,” send in the UN — from which America will have withdrawn and “off-shored” to somewhere in Europe (and good luck with these clowns).

(If you have never seen it, slide on down to Blockbuster and rent “The Day the Earth Stood Still” with Arabic/Farsi or Chinese subtitles, of course. REREAD 3 AND THINK “GORT.”)

And also remember that, since we have pulled our guys out of other nations and closed those bases – horribly costly activities with which we are no longer burdened — we have devoted those diverted resources to new, more effective human intelligence gathering methods using many of YOUR citizens as paid snitches (no more stupid Church Amendment!) so we WILL KNOW when you’re up to no good. And don’t forget that those freed up resources will allow development of more devastating weapons should we need them. Trust us when we tell you that they’re really cool.

Speaking of “cool,” we’ll send all the Kool-Aid you might request but the FOREIGN AID FROM HERE IS OVER. Yep, the gravy train is out of fuel. Since so much of it has wound up in the Swiss accounts of your local despot (or back in a few international banks to cover their crappy “loans” to your dear leader to support his regime), your citizens probably won’t even miss it.

4. Once those smoking ruins have sufficiently cooled – and the radiation levels have fallen — we will put boots on the ground, clear any remaining resistance and seize your former property for the benefit of those who participated in the neutralization of the threat you posed. Casualties among our troops should be very limited because, as we think you have seen, the weapons possessed by the United States will leave very few to resist. REREAD 4 AND THINK 51st STATE!

It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats yet they are still POOR!

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

For the Net Neutrality thing, just Google "violations of net neutrality". There are multiple instances of companies blocking certain things because they don't like it.

Hell, AT&T terms of use was scrutinized for this:

Rich people don't tend to live in large cities by and large. They live in suburbs. New York, LA, Chicago, none of those are on the top 10 list.

Virginia Beach, Virginia is.

But the richest city: San Francisco. The bastion of gay liberal abortionists.

Well, in Cincinnati's case it's true, but the City Council is split pretty evenly, Boehner is from a neighboring district, and Cincinnati's district house representative is a Republican (Jean Schmidt).

First blush I'd say that most of those cities fall into rust belt cities that have had a slow death since their industry outsourced to China and/or are immigrant cities where most of the residents that are poor are either immigrant or their recent descendents. Both of those things which are for the most part out of the control of the city itself.

vvvvvv Also I wonder if all of these cities still have partisan mayoral elections to even say if they elect a Republican or Democrat at all.

It needs to be pointed out over and over againt that the rich aren't being "destroyed" no matter how big of a CommuNazi they think Obama is. The "job creators" are making more than ever. Obama's "persecution" of Wall Street involved giving them trillions of dollars.

If saying that the rich shouldn't get extra tax cuts and subsidies is "class hatred," what the hell is union busting and this effort to get the stuggling and the sick who can't get insurance even when they try labeled as a bunch of parasites?

Someone help me finish this sentence: "The Koch brothers recieve more welfare than every food stamp and Medicaid recipient in _____ combined."

We want to help those struggling through the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression. It's not their fault it's not their fault IT'S NOT THEIR FAULT. Bad things happening means people need more help, not less. Why do so many of these people find this so hard to understand?!
If every single unemployed person applied to every job they could find, gave stellar and charismatic interviews, got glowing recommendations, and crafted well-made resumes tailored to ephasize their greatest strengths for every job, there would still be just as many unemployed. Teaching a man to fish may feed him for life as they're so fond of saying, but that won't mean poo poo if he doesn't have fishing equipment. All the thrift, gumption, and hard work in the universe won't do a thing if there is no where to put them to work.
I've heard Rush Limbaugh saying that "encouraging dependence" on welfare is "cruel" (This from a man who masturbates to the sobbing of a laid-off Detroit autoworker learning he'll have to sell his house to pay for his son's chemo). Everyone in America is already dependent, on money. Saying the unemployment should be kicked off of welfare in a jobless climate because they shouldn't become dependent is like strangling someone to help them cope with their oxygen addiction.

I'm also stupid on a scale that can only be measured in Reddits.
I generally let 100+ replies build up in this thread and then read them all at once. It instills a not entirely unpleasant feeling of creeping insanity like the kind which Lovecraft was fond of writing about. This time I read about 250 and the effect was more pronounced, the offered "divorce agreement" seemed like a plausible and, indeed, fantastic idea. Can we seriously do this? There is a segment of my country with which is impossible for me to relate to on any level. And they're actively trying to drive us all into the ground. I would much prefer to have them at the comfortable distance of a psycho ex.

I suspect that's partly due to the "Why would you need an X to hunt?" arguement. The easy answer is "The 2nd amendment isn't about hunting."

Edit: Oh I agree, I'm a fan of things that go bang myself. I just suspect that's why the debate has shifted. You don't need to make the hunting argument when arguing constitutionality.

The fact is that many cities have democratic party machines that basically pick the next mayor, and that is probably a problem. But that doesn't have anything to do with poverty, except perhaps that people in cities vote Democrat because the Republicans don't have any ideas for fixing poverty. Also cities are full of black people, and Republicans hate black people, so how is that supposed to work?

Urban decay is more a function of segregation and white flight than anything to do with politics.

Be careful, while they may be "red" states, a little research will show:
The ratio is Democrat to Republican governors from about 1850 to now. I was surprised myself.

Tennessee 15.0% (22:6)
South Carolina 15.0% (25:5)
Arizona 15.2% (16:10)
West Virginia 15.4% (20:15)
Oklahoma 15.6% (22:4)
Texas 16.2% (39:6)
Alabama 16.7% (52:6)
New Mexico 17.9% (19:12)
Louisiana 18.3% (40:10)
Mississippi 20.1% (31:5)
